Effect of Accounting Education on Students’ Knowledge of Financial Information Used by Business Investors in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Accounting education plays an important role in developing students’ knowledge of how financial information is prepared, interpreted, and used by different stakeholders in business organizations. Business investors rely on relevant financial information to assess profitability, financial position, cash flows, business performance, and potential investment risks before committing resources. However, accounting students may have limited knowledge of the types of financial information investors use and how such information supports investment decisions. This study therefore examines the effect of Accounting Education on students’ knowledge of financial information used by business investors in Nigerian universities. Accounting education provides students with knowledge of financial accounting, financial reporting, management accounting, auditing, financial analysis, and accounting information systems. Through classroom instruction, practical exercises, financial statement analysis, and case studies, students learn how financial information is generated, classified, summarized, and communicated. Students are also introduced to accounting information such as revenue, expenses, assets, liabilities, equity, profitability, cash flows, and financial performance indicators. Such knowledge provides a foundation for understanding the financial information that investors examine when evaluating business opportunities. Students’ knowledge of financial information used by business investors refers to their ability to identify, explain, and interpret financial information relevant to investment evaluation. This includes understanding information contained in financial statements, profitability measures, cash-flow information, financial position, business performance, and other relevant financial indicators. Investors use such information to assess the financial strength, performance, prospects, and risks associated with a business before making investment decisions. Adequate knowledge of these information requirements can therefore help accounting students understand the relationship between accounting information and investment evaluation. Accounting education may consequently influence students’ ability to recognize and interpret financial information relevant to business investors. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise accounting education students in selected Nigerian universities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ exposure to accounting education and their knowledge of financial information used by business investors. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistical techniques appropriate for determining the effect of accounting education on students’ knowledge of investor-relevant financial information. The study is expected to establish that accounting education has a positive effect on students’ knowledge of financial information used by business investors. Students with stronger exposure to relevant accounting instruction are expected to demonstrate better understanding of financial statements, profitability information, cash-flow information, financial position, and other financial information relevant to investment evaluation. The study may also establish that practical financial statement analysis and investment-related accounting exercises improve students’ ability to recognize the information investors require when assessing businesses. The findings are expected to have important implications for teaching and learning in accounting education. Accounting educators may need to place greater emphasis on how accounting information is used by investors and other external decision-makers. Practical activities involving financial statement interpretation, investment analysis, business performance evaluation, and comparison of financial information can help students understand the relevance of accounting information to investment decisions. Incorporating investor-oriented activities into accounting instruction may therefore strengthen students’ ability to connect accounting knowledge with real-world financial decision-making. The study will be significant to accounting education students, accounting educators, university administrators, curriculum planners, professional accounting bodies, business investors, and employers of accounting graduates. Students may benefit from improved understanding of the financial information required for investment evaluation and professional accounting practice. Educators and curriculum planners may use the findings to strengthen financial reporting and financial analysis components of accounting programmes, while investors and employers may benefit from graduates who possess better knowledge of how financial information supports investment-related decisions. The study recommends that Nigerian universities strengthen accounting education by incorporating more investor-focused financial information activities into relevant accounting courses. Accounting educators should expose students to realistic financial statements and require them to identify, interpret, and evaluate information that may be relevant to business investors. Practical exercises involving profitability analysis, cash-flow interpretation, financial position assessment, and investment-oriented financial analysis should be encouraged. The study concludes that relevant and practically oriented accounting education can enhance students’ knowledge of financial information used by business investors and better prepare them for professional accounting and financial decision-making responsibilities.
