Effect of Accounting Education on Students’ Understanding of Corporate Insolvency Rights and Procedures in Nigeria

Abstract

Accounting education provides students with knowledge of financial reporting, business operations, accountability, and regulatory practices, while corporate insolvency rights and procedures refer to the legal and administrative processes that apply when a company is unable to meet its financial obligations. Understanding these rights and procedures is important for Accounting Education students because accountants may be involved in financial assessment, reporting, restructuring, liquidation, and other activities associated with financially distressed organizations. However, inadequate exposure to corporate insolvency concepts may limit students’ understanding of the rights, responsibilities, and procedures applicable during insolvency situations. This study therefore examines the effect of accounting education on students’ understanding of corporate insolvency rights and procedures in Nigeria. Accounting education exposes students to financial accounting, auditing, taxation, business law, corporate reporting, financial management, and professional ethics. These areas can provide a foundation for understanding corporate financial distress and the procedures that may follow when an organization becomes insolvent. Through lectures, practical exercises, case studies, and discussions, students can gain knowledge of financial distress indicators, creditor and shareholder interests, insolvency documentation, restructuring arrangements, liquidation processes, and the professional responsibilities of accountants involved in distressed organizations. Students’ understanding of corporate insolvency rights and procedures involves knowledge of the rights and responsibilities of relevant parties, the procedures applicable to financially distressed companies, and the roles of professionals involved in insolvency processes. It includes awareness of issues relating to creditors, shareholders, directors, insolvency practitioners, company assets, claims, restructuring, and liquidation. Accounting education can strengthen this understanding by connecting financial information with business law, corporate governance, auditing, and financial management. Adequate knowledge may enable students to better recognize the financial and professional implications of corporate insolvency. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected tertiary institutions, from which an appropriate sample will be selected. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a knowledge assessment instrument designed to measure students’ exposure to accounting education and their understanding of corporate insolvency rights and procedures. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the relevant hypothesis tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that accounting education has a significant positive effect on students’ understanding of corporate insolvency rights and procedures. Students with stronger exposure to relevant accounting, auditing, financial management, business law, and corporate reporting concepts are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of insolvency processes and the rights of parties involved. The study may also identify areas of limited understanding, particularly regarding the responsibilities of directors, creditors, shareholders, and professionals during insolvency proceedings. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in Accounting Education. Lecturers may need to provide greater attention to corporate insolvency and its relationship with accounting practice. Case studies involving financially distressed companies, simulated insolvency situations, analysis of corporate financial statements, and practical discussions of restructuring and liquidation procedures can help students connect theoretical knowledge with professional situations. Such approaches may also improve students’ ability to understand the financial and legal consequences associated with corporate insolvency. The study will be beneficial to Accounting Education students, lecturers, tertiary institutions, curriculum developers, employers, and professionals involved in accounting and corporate financial management. Students may gain better preparation for professional responsibilities involving financially distressed organizations, while lecturers may obtain useful information for improving instruction in accounting, business law, and financial management. Institutions and curriculum developers may also use the findings to strengthen insolvency-related content within Accounting Education programmes. The study recommends that corporate insolvency concepts should be given greater attention in relevant Accounting Education courses through case studies, practical exercises, corporate failure scenarios, and discussions of insolvency procedures. Lecturers should emphasize the rights and responsibilities of creditors, shareholders, directors, and relevant professionals, as well as restructuring and liquidation procedures. Tertiary institutions should also encourage practical learning that connects accounting knowledge with corporate legal and financial situations. In conclusion, effective accounting education can improve students’ understanding of corporate insolvency rights and procedures and better prepare future accounting professionals to respond appropriately to financially distressed organizations.
