Effect of Accounting Estimate Revision Exercises on Students’ Professional Judgment Skills in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Professional judgment is an essential competency in accounting because accounting practitioners are frequently required to evaluate available information, interpret accounting circumstances, assess uncertainty, and make reasonable decisions when preparing and reporting financial information. Accounting estimates may require revision when new information, changed circumstances, updated assumptions, or improved evidence become available. Accounting Education students therefore need practical opportunities to understand how changes in estimates affect accounting calculations, financial statements, and professional decisions. However, students in Nigerian universities may have limited exposure to practical exercises that simulate the revision of accounting estimates and the judgment required when responding to changes in accounting information. Accounting Estimate Revision Exercises provide students with opportunities to analyse changes in assumptions, revise accounting estimates, evaluate their financial effects, and justify appropriate accounting treatments using realistic accounting scenarios. Such practical activities may strengthen students’ analytical reasoning, decision-making, interpretation, and professional judgment skills. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Accounting Estimate Revision Exercises on students’ professional judgment skills in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop professional competencies through concrete experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant accounting knowledge and practical skills improves students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Accounting Estimate Revision Exercises may influence students’ professional judgment skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, professional judgment skills assessment scales, accounting estimate revision tasks, case-based exercises, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, scenario-based questions, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Accounting Estimate Revision Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as identification of accounting estimates, understanding of estimation uncertainty, recognition of new information, identification of changed circumstances, evaluation of assumptions, review of historical information, assessment of current information, use of relevant evidence, estimation of useful lives, estimation of residual values, depreciation-estimate revision, bad-debt estimate revision, allowance-estimate revision, inventory-obsolescence estimate revision, warranty-estimate revision, provision-estimate revision, impairment-estimate revision, expected-loss estimate revision, revenue-estimate revision, expense-estimate revision, asset-value estimate revision, liability-estimate revision, revision of percentage estimates, revision of probability estimates, revision of quantity estimates, revision of cost estimates, revision of time estimates, revision of financial assumptions, recalculation procedures, comparison of old and revised estimates, determination of financial effects, analysis of changes in profit, analysis of changes in assets, analysis of changes in liabilities, analysis of changes in equity, analysis of changes in expenses, analysis of changes in revenue, evaluation of materiality, assessment of relevance, assessment of reliability, evaluation of consistency, consideration of prudence, consideration of neutrality, recognition of uncertainty, evaluation of alternative treatments, identification of appropriate accounting treatment, application of accounting principles, interpretation of accounting standards, treatment of changes in estimates, distinction between changes in estimates and errors, identification of prior-period errors, correction of accounting errors, prospective treatment, disclosure considerations, financial-statement impact assessment, journal-entry preparation, ledger adjustment, supporting-document review, documentation of assumptions, documentation of calculations, documentation of professional reasoning, preparation of explanatory notes, communication of revised estimates, review procedures, approval procedures, internal-control procedures, audit-trail maintenance, case analysis, problem-solving activities, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group exercises, role-play activities, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging professional judgment scenarios. Students’ professional judgment skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to identify relevant accounting estimates, recognize estimation uncertainty, identify new information, identify changed circumstances, evaluate assumptions, review historical information, assess current evidence, use relevant information, revise useful-life estimates, revise residual-value estimates, revise depreciation estimates, revise bad-debt estimates, revise allowances, revise inventory-obsolescence estimates, revise warranty estimates, revise provisions, revise impairment estimates, revise expected-loss estimates, revise revenue estimates, revise expense estimates, revise asset-value estimates, revise liability estimates, revise percentage estimates, revise probability estimates, revise quantity estimates, revise cost estimates, revise time estimates, revise financial assumptions, recalculate revised estimates, compare original and revised estimates, determine financial effects, analyse effects on profit, assets, liabilities, equity, expenses, and revenue, assess materiality, evaluate relevance and reliability, consider consistency, apply professional prudence, maintain neutrality, recognize uncertainty, compare alternative treatments, select appropriate accounting treatments, apply accounting principles, interpret accounting standards, account appropriately for changes in estimates, distinguish changes in estimates from accounting errors, identify prior-period errors, determine appropriate corrections, apply prospective treatment where required, identify disclosure implications, assess financial-statement effects, prepare journal entries, adjust ledger accounts, review supporting documents, document assumptions, document calculations, explain professional reasoning, prepare explanatory notes, communicate accounting decisions, apply review procedures, follow approval procedures, apply internal controls, maintain audit trails, analyse accounting cases, solve accounting problems, justify decisions, demonstrate analytical reasoning, demonstrate critical thinking, demonstrate consistency, demonstrate objectivity, demonstrate ethical awareness, demonstrate confidence, demonstrate decision-making ability, demonstrate accountability, demonstrate responsibility, demonstrate professional competence, demonstrate adaptability, and overall professional judgment competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Accounting Estimate Revision Exercises, practical experiences, and professional judgment skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Accounting Estimate Revision Exercises on students’ professional judgment skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, professional judgment scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Accounting Estimate Revision Exercises have a significant positive effect on students’ professional judgment skills in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to structured accounting estimate revision exercises are expected to demonstrate improved ability to recognize changes in information, evaluate assumptions, revise accounting estimates, assess financial consequences, select appropriate accounting treatments, and justify professional decisions. Progressively challenging scenarios may prepare students for increasingly complex professional accounting situations. However, the effectiveness of Accounting Estimate Revision Exercises may be constrained by inadequate accounting laboratories, limited access to realistic financial information, insufficient practical accounting materials, large class sizes, limited practical training periods, inadequate lecturer supervision, outdated instructional materials, limited access to accounting software, insufficient exposure to professional accounting cases, inadequate feedback, low student participation, weak university-industry collaboration, and inadequate integration of professional judgment activities into Accounting Education curricula. The study therefore expects realistic, structured, hands-on, case-based, workplace-oriented, and adequately supervised Accounting Estimate Revision Exercises to contribute significantly to improved professional judgment skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Accounting Estimate Revision Exercises, professional judgment skills, Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, Human Capital Theory, accounting education, practical accounting education, accounting estimates, estimation uncertainty, depreciation estimates, bad-debt estimates, allowance estimates, inventory estimates, warranty estimates, provision estimates, impairment estimates, expected-loss estimates, revenue estimates, expense estimates, asset valuation, liability estimation, accounting assumptions, financial reporting, accounting standards, changes in accounting estimates, accounting errors, prior-period errors, professional judgment, decision-making, analytical reasoning, critical thinking, accounting ethics, financial-statement analysis, accounting documentation, accounting software, workplace readiness, employability skills, professional competence, Accounting Education students, Nigerian universities, and Accounting Education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, university administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, employers, industry partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students’ professional judgment competencies. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Accounting Estimate Revision Exercises into Accounting Education programmes, developing realistic case-based accounting simulations, strengthening students’ ability to evaluate changing financial information, incorporating professional judgment and decision-making activities into practical accounting instruction, improving students’ understanding of accounting estimates and estimation uncertainty, providing repeated case-based exercises and structured feedback, strengthening documentation and justification of accounting decisions, expanding collaboration between universities and accounting workplaces, and aligning Accounting Education programmes with contemporary professional judgment and financial-reporting requirements in Nigeria.
