Effect of Accounting Flashcards on Students’ Recall of Accounting Principles in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Accounting flashcards provide students with a structured and repetitive approach to learning and recalling accounting principles, concepts, terminology, rules, and procedures. Accounting education students are expected to remember fundamental accounting principles and retrieve them accurately when solving problems, interpreting transactions, preparing accounting records, and answering assessment questions. However, students may experience difficulties recalling accounting principles when instruction depends mainly on lectures, note-taking, and one-time exposure to accounting concepts. Accounting Flashcards provide opportunities for repeated retrieval practice through concise prompts, definitions, accounting rules, examples, and concept-response activities. They may be used individually, in pairs, groups, or through digital platforms to strengthen students' ability to retrieve previously learned accounting knowledge. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of accounting flashcards on students' recall of accounting principles in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Retrieval Practice Theory, Cognitive Learning Theory, and Constructivist Learning Theory. Retrieval Practice Theory emphasizes the strengthening of long-term memory through repeated attempts to recall previously learned information. Cognitive Learning Theory explains how learners acquire, organize, store, and retrieve accounting information from memory. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes the active construction of knowledge by connecting new accounting information with students' existing knowledge and experiences. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how accounting flashcards may influence students' recall of accounting principles. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise accounting education students enrolled in selected public polytechnics across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible accounting education students. Accounting flashcards will be assessed using indicators such as definition cards, principle-response cards, accounting terminology cards, debit-and-credit cards, classification cards, financial reporting cards, bookkeeping cards, costing cards, taxation cards, auditing cards, accounting-standard cards, rule-based cards, formula cards, concept-example cards, question-and-answer cards, true-or-false cards, comparison cards, error-identification cards, scenario-based cards, physical flashcards, digital flashcards, individual flashcard practice, paired practice, group flashcard activities, timed recall activities, shuffled card activities, repeated review, spaced review, immediate feedback, corrective practice, progressive difficulty, self-testing, peer testing, lecturer-guided flashcard activities, and opportunities for students to create their own accounting flashcards. Students' recall of accounting principles will be assessed using indicators such as ability to recall fundamental accounting principles, state accounting principles accurately, define accounting concepts, identify the appropriate principle for a given accounting situation, distinguish between related principles, recall debit and credit rules, recall account classifications, recall recognition and measurement principles, recall financial reporting principles, recall bookkeeping procedures, recall costing principles, recall taxation concepts, recall auditing principles, recall relevant accounting terminology, reproduce accounting rules without prompts, recognize principles from unfamiliar examples, apply recalled principles to accounting situations, distinguish correct from incorrect accounting treatments, recall principles after a period of time, retrieve information under timed conditions, and maintain accurate recall across repeated assessments. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized accounting principle recall tests, flashcard-based recall activities, terminology tests, scenario-based accounting questions, delayed recall assessments, observation checklists, competency-based assessment rubrics, students' flashcard records, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to accounting flashcards, learning experiences, and levels of accounting principle recall. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of accounting flashcards on students' recall of accounting principles. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students' recall scores before and after exposure to accounting flashcards may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional accounting instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that accounting flashcards have a significant positive effect on students' recall of accounting principles in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to systematic flashcard activities are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to retrieve accounting principles, terminology, rules, and concepts than students receiving conventional instruction without structured retrieval practice. Definition cards may strengthen students' ability to recall the meanings of important accounting concepts, while principle-response cards may improve their ability to retrieve accounting rules when presented with relevant questions. Debit-and-credit cards may reinforce fundamental bookkeeping principles, while classification cards may improve recall of the appropriate treatment of assets, liabilities, equity, revenue, and expenses. Financial reporting and accounting-standard cards may strengthen students' familiarity with specialized reporting principles. Costing, taxation, and auditing flashcards may extend retrieval practice across different areas of accounting education. Scenario-based flashcards may help students move beyond simple memorization by requiring them to recognize the accounting principle relevant to a practical situation. Digital flashcards may provide convenient opportunities for repeated and spaced review, while individual practice may encourage self-directed learning. Paired and group activities may provide opportunities for peer testing and immediate correction. Timed recall activities may improve students' ability to retrieve accounting principles efficiently during assessments. Progressive difficulty may allow students to move from basic principles to more complex accounting rules and applications. Delayed recall tests may provide evidence of whether flashcard-supported learning is retained beyond immediate classroom assessments. However, excessive reliance on memorization, poorly designed flashcards, inadequate contextual explanation, repetitive activities that reduce student interest, limited access to digital devices, insufficient instructional time, and students' tendency to recognize answers without genuinely retrieving them may reduce the effectiveness of flashcard-based learning. The study therefore expects well-designed, curriculum-aligned, retrieval-focused, contextualized, and regularly reviewed accounting flashcards to contribute significantly to improved recall of accounting principles among accounting education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on accounting flashcards, recall of accounting principles, retrieval practice, cognitive learning, constructivist learning, accounting education, memory-based learning, accounting terminology, accounting principles, practical accounting education, accounting knowledge retention, learner-centred instruction, accounting skills development, accounting pedagogy, and polytechnic education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Board for Technical Education, polytechnics, accounting education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students' retention and retrieval of foundational accounting knowledge. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating accounting flashcards into accounting education programmes, developing curriculum-aligned physical and digital flashcards, incorporating spaced and repeated retrieval activities, combining flashcard recall with contextual accounting applications, strengthening students' self-testing habits, providing immediate corrective feedback, training accounting educators in retrieval-based instructional strategies, using delayed assessments to evaluate long-term recall, and developing competency-based assessments of students' ability to retrieve and apply accounting principles in Nigerian polytechnics.
