Effect of Accounting Knowledge on Students’ Ability to Evaluate the Viability of Business Ventures in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

The ability to evaluate the viability of business ventures is an important competency for Accounting Education students because accounting knowledge provides the financial information required to assess business performance, profitability, costs, risks, cash flows, and investment prospects. Students with adequate accounting knowledge are expected to apply financial information in determining whether a proposed business venture is financially sustainable and capable of generating acceptable returns. However, some Accounting Education students may possess theoretical accounting knowledge without being able to effectively apply such knowledge when evaluating real-world business opportunities. This gap may limit their preparedness for entrepreneurship, investment decisions, and professional accounting responsibilities. Accounting knowledge may provide students with the analytical foundation needed to interpret financial information and make informed judgments about the viability of business ventures. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of accounting knowledge on students’ ability to evaluate the viability of business ventures in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Human Capital Theory, Experiential Learning Theory, and Decision-Making Theory. Human Capital Theory explains how accounting knowledge and skills constitute valuable competencies that improve students’ productivity and ability to make economically informed decisions. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes the importance of applying accounting knowledge to practical business situations through experience, reflection, and active problem-solving. Decision-Making Theory explains how relevant financial information can be evaluated systematically to support rational and informed business decisions. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how accounting knowledge may influence students’ ability to evaluate business venture viability. The study will adopt a quantitative analytical cross-sectional or quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Accounting knowledge will be assessed using indicators such as knowledge of financial accounting principles, bookkeeping procedures, financial statement preparation, cost accounting, management accounting, budgeting, cash-flow analysis, taxation, financial ratios, working capital management, investment appraisal, and interpretation of financial information. Students’ ability to evaluate business venture viability will be assessed using indicators such as identification of business costs, estimation of revenue, calculation of expected profit, analysis of cash flows, determination of break-even point, interpretation of profitability ratios, assessment of liquidity, evaluation of solvency, analysis of operating costs, estimation of investment returns, assessment of financial risks, comparison of alternative ventures, interpretation of financial statements, preparation of basic business budgets, evaluation of working capital requirements, assessment of funding needs, identification of potential financial problems, and overall business viability assessment. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, accounting knowledge tests, business-case scenarios, financial-analysis exercises, and practical business-venture evaluation tasks. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ characteristics, accounting knowledge levels, and business-viability evaluation performance. Inferential statistical techniques, including correlation analysis, t-tests, analysis of variance, and regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of accounting knowledge on students’ ability to evaluate the viability of business ventures. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students’ business-venture evaluation scores before and after accounting-based practical activities may be compared to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that accounting knowledge has a significant positive effect on students’ ability to evaluate the viability of business ventures in Nigerian universities. Students with higher levels of accounting knowledge are expected to demonstrate greater competence in interpreting financial information and determining whether proposed business ventures are financially viable. Knowledge of financial accounting may improve students’ ability to understand financial statements and assess the financial position of a business. Bookkeeping knowledge may strengthen their ability to identify and interpret business transactions and financial records. Cost accounting knowledge may improve their ability to identify fixed and variable costs and determine appropriate cost structures. Management accounting knowledge may strengthen their ability to use accounting information for planning and decision-making. Budgeting knowledge may improve students’ ability to estimate revenues, expenses, and expected cash requirements. Cash-flow knowledge may strengthen their ability to assess the ability of a venture to generate sufficient cash to meet its obligations. Break-even analysis may improve their ability to determine the sales level required to avoid losses. Profitability analysis may strengthen their ability to evaluate expected returns from business activities. Liquidity analysis may improve their ability to assess short-term financial obligations. Solvency analysis may strengthen their ability to evaluate long-term financial sustainability. Working-capital knowledge may improve their assessment of operational funding requirements. Investment-appraisal knowledge may strengthen their ability to evaluate potential returns and risks associated with business ventures. Taxation knowledge may improve their ability to consider tax obligations when estimating business costs and returns. Financial-ratio analysis may strengthen their ability to interpret financial performance and identify potential weaknesses. Business-case exercises may improve students’ ability to integrate different accounting concepts when making venture decisions. However, inadequate practical accounting exposure, limited entrepreneurial experience, difficulty interpreting financial information, insufficient access to realistic business data, and weak integration of entrepreneurship and practical accounting activities into university Accounting Education programmes may limit students’ ability to apply accounting knowledge effectively. The study therefore expects strong accounting knowledge combined with practical financial-analysis experience to contribute significantly to improved business-venture viability evaluation among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on accounting knowledge, business-venture viability evaluation, accounting education, financial literacy, financial analysis, entrepreneurship education, management accounting, cost accounting, financial accounting, budgeting, cash-flow analysis, investment appraisal, financial decision-making, and practical accounting education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, university administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, entrepreneurship educators, professional accounting bodies, employers, prospective entrepreneurs, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students’ ability to apply accounting knowledge to business decisions. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening practical accounting instruction, integrating business-venture evaluation exercises into Accounting Education programmes, improving students’ financial-analysis skills, incorporating realistic business cases into accounting courses, strengthening budgeting and cash-flow analysis activities, improving students’ investment-appraisal competence, and developing Accounting Education graduates who can effectively apply accounting knowledge when evaluating business opportunities in Nigeria.
