Effect of Accounting Measurement Education on Students’ Understanding of Financial Measurement Bases in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
This study examined the effect of accounting measurement education on students’ understanding of financial measurement bases in Nigerian universities. Accounting measurement is an important component of financial reporting because it provides the basis for determining the monetary amounts assigned to assets, liabilities, income and expenses in financial statements. A proper understanding of financial measurement bases is essential for accounting students because it enables them to appreciate how financial information is measured, recognized and presented for the benefit of users of financial statements. Different measurement bases, such as historical cost and fair value, require students to understand their meanings, characteristics, applications and differences. However, some accounting students may experience difficulties in distinguishing between various measurement bases and applying the appropriate measurement principles to financial reporting situations. These difficulties may affect their overall understanding of accounting and financial reporting concepts. The study therefore examined whether accounting measurement education has a significant effect on students’ understanding of financial measurement bases. The study adopted a survey research design. The population of the study comprised Accounting students in selected Nigerian universities. A representative sample was selected from the population using an appropriate sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ exposure to accounting measurement education and their understanding of financial measurement bases. The instrument covered relevant areas such as the meaning and purpose of accounting measurement, historical cost, fair value and the application of different measurement bases in financial reporting. Students’ understanding was assessed based on their ability to identify, explain, differentiate and apply financial measurement bases to accounting situations. The instrument was subjected to appropriate validation procedures by experts in Accounting Education and related fields, while a reliability test was conducted to establish its consistency before administration. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to summarize the data, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique was used to test the research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that accounting measurement education has a significant effect on students’ understanding of financial measurement bases. Effective education on accounting measurement may enable students to understand the differences between historical cost and fair value and recognize the circumstances in which different measurement approaches are applied. It may also improve students’ ability to analyze financial reporting situations and determine appropriate measurement treatments. A strong understanding of measurement bases is important because accounting students require both conceptual knowledge and practical skills to interpret financial information and apply accounting principles effectively. The findings of the study will be useful to Accounting students, accounting lecturers, university management, curriculum planners and other stakeholders in accounting education. For students, the study will emphasize the importance of developing a sound understanding of accounting measurement as a foundation for financial reporting. For lecturers, the findings may provide useful information on students’ areas of difficulty and encourage the use of practical teaching approaches. Curriculum planners may also use the findings to strengthen the coverage of accounting measurement concepts in accounting education programmes, while university management may support accounting departments through the provision of current textbooks, accounting standards, digital learning resources and other instructional materials. The study further emphasizes the need for practical and application-based approaches to teaching financial measurement bases. Accounting lecturers should expose students to practical examples, financial reporting exercises, case studies and problem-solving activities that require them to distinguish between and apply different measurement bases. Such activities can help students connect theoretical accounting concepts with practical financial reporting situations and improve their analytical abilities. Based on the expected findings, the study recommends that Nigerian universities should strengthen accounting measurement education by combining theoretical explanations with practical applications. Lecturers should provide students with regular exercises involving historical cost, fair value and other relevant measurement concepts. Students should also be encouraged to engage in financial statement analysis and practical accounting problems to improve their understanding of measurement principles. Universities should provide up-to-date instructional materials that reflect current financial reporting requirements. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of accounting measurement education in developing students’ understanding of financial measurement bases in Nigerian universities. Effective education on measurement concepts can provide students with the knowledge and skills required to understand how financial information is measured and reported. Strengthening the teaching of accounting measurement through practical and conceptual approaches can therefore contribute to improved financial reporting knowledge and better preparation of Accounting students for academic and professional responsibilities.
