Effect of Accounting Question Interpretation Skills on Students’ Performance in Advanced Financial Accounting in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Accounting Question Interpretation Skills refer to students’ ability to read, understand, analyse, and correctly identify the requirements of accounting questions before applying appropriate accounting principles and procedures. These skills are particularly important in Advanced Financial Accounting, where examination and classroom problems often involve complex transactions, detailed instructions, and multiple accounting requirements. Difficulties in interpreting questions may lead students to select inappropriate accounting procedures or provide incomplete solutions even when they possess relevant accounting knowledge. This study therefore examines the effect of Accounting Question Interpretation Skills on students’ performance in Advanced Financial Accounting in Nigerian universities. Accounting Question Interpretation Skills involve identifying key information, understanding accounting terminology, recognizing the specific requirements of a question, distinguishing relevant information from unnecessary details, and determining the appropriate accounting procedure required to solve a problem. In Advanced Financial Accounting, students may encounter questions involving complex financial transactions, group accounts, partnership changes, company accounts, financial reporting issues, and other advanced accounting procedures. Developing strong interpretation skills may enable students to approach such questions systematically and select appropriate methods for producing accurate solutions. Students’ performance in Advanced Financial Accounting refers to their ability to understand and correctly solve complex accounting problems and demonstrate the application of advanced accounting principles and procedures. Performance may be reflected in students’ ability to analyse transactions, prepare relevant accounting statements, apply appropriate accounting treatments, and provide complete solutions to advanced accounting questions. Accounting Question Interpretation Skills may improve such performance by helping students correctly understand what each question requires before attempting the necessary accounting calculations and procedures. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian universities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on students’ Accounting Question Interpretation Skills and their performance in Advanced Financial Accounting. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that Accounting Question Interpretation Skills have a significant positive effect on students’ performance in Advanced Financial Accounting. Students with stronger interpretation skills may demonstrate greater ability to identify question requirements, select relevant accounting procedures, organize accounting information, and produce appropriate solutions to complex financial accounting problems. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of Advanced Financial Accounting in universities. Lecturers may need to give greater attention to question interpretation as part of accounting instruction rather than focusing exclusively on calculations and accounting procedures. Question-analysis exercises, examination-style problems, guided interpretation activities, practical case questions, and classroom discussions may provide students with opportunities to develop the skills required to understand and solve complex accounting questions. The study will be beneficial to Accounting Education students, lecturers, university administrators, curriculum planners, and other stakeholders in accounting education. Students may develop stronger problem-solving and examination skills, while lecturers may gain insight into the importance of question interpretation in Advanced Financial Accounting instruction. University administrators and curriculum planners may also use the findings to strengthen instructional activities that prepare students to handle complex accounting problems and assessments. The study recommends that Nigerian universities should incorporate Accounting Question Interpretation Skills into the teaching of Advanced Financial Accounting. Lecturers should provide students with regular opportunities to analyse accounting questions, identify requirements, distinguish relevant information, and select appropriate accounting procedures before attempting solutions. The study concludes that effective development of Accounting Question Interpretation Skills can enhance students’ performance in Advanced Financial Accounting and contribute to stronger analytical competence in accounting education.
