Effect of Accounting Textbook Illustrations on Students’ Understanding of Complex Accounting Concepts in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

This study examined the effect of accounting textbook illustrations on students’ understanding of complex accounting concepts in Nigerian polytechnics. Accounting textbook illustrations are visual and practical representations used to explain accounting concepts, principles, procedures and relationships through worked examples, diagrams, tables, charts, figures, accounting formats, practical scenarios and other forms of visual presentation. They are particularly important in accounting education because many accounting concepts involve abstract principles, numerical relationships and procedural steps that students may find difficult to understand through textual explanations alone. Complex accounting concepts may include partnership accounting, company accounts, accounting for branches, incomplete records, manufacturing accounts, depreciation, inventory valuation, financial statement adjustments, consignment accounts, departmental accounts and other advanced accounting topics. This study therefore investigated whether the use of illustrations in accounting textbooks has a significant effect on students’ understanding of complex accounting concepts in Nigerian polytechnics. The study was motivated by the challenges students may encounter when learning accounting concepts that require the integration of theoretical knowledge with numerical procedures. Accounting textbooks often contain detailed explanations of accounting principles, but students may experience difficulties when concepts are presented predominantly in textual form. Illustrations can provide additional explanations by showing how accounting principles operate in practical situations. Worked examples can demonstrate the sequence of steps required to solve accounting problems, while tables and diagrams can simplify relationships among accounting elements. The appropriate use of illustrations may therefore make complex accounting concepts more concrete, understandable and easier for students to apply. The study adopted a survey research design. The population of the study comprised Accounting and Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A representative sample was selected from the population using an appropriate sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to obtain information on the use of accounting textbook illustrations and students’ understanding of complex accounting concepts. The textbook illustration component focused on the clarity, relevance, accuracy, adequacy, variety and practical usefulness of illustrations contained in accounting textbooks. Attention was given to worked examples, diagrams, tables, charts, accounting formats, step-by-step calculations, practical business scenarios and graphical representations. Students’ understanding was considered in relation to their ability to explain complex accounting concepts, follow accounting procedures, solve accounting problems, interpret accounting information and apply accounting principles to practical situations. The research instrument was subjected to appropriate validation procedures by experts in Accounting Education, Accounting and related fields to ensure that the items adequately represented the variables under investigation. A reliability procedure was also conducted to establish the consistency of the instrument before administration to the respondents. Data obtained from the respondents were organized, coded and analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to summarize the responses obtained from the respondents. An appropriate inferential statistical technique was employed to test the stated research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The analysis focused on determining whether accounting textbook illustrations have a statistically significant effect on students’ understanding of complex accounting concepts. The study is expected to establish that accounting textbook illustrations have a significant effect on students’ understanding of complex accounting concepts. Students who have access to accounting textbooks containing clear and relevant illustrations may be better able to understand difficult concepts because illustrations provide practical representations of accounting procedures and relationships. By observing worked examples and following accounting processes step by step, students may develop a clearer understanding of how accounting principles are applied to different situations. Worked examples are particularly important in accounting education because many accounting topics require students to move from theoretical explanations to practical calculations. A well-designed worked example can show students how to identify relevant information, select the appropriate accounting procedure, perform the required calculations and arrive at a logical conclusion. Students can study the sequence of steps and subsequently apply similar procedures to new accounting problems. This can reduce the difficulty associated with learning complex accounting processes. Tables can also enhance students’ understanding by organizing large amounts of accounting information in a structured format. For example, tables may be used to compare accounting treatments, classify costs, summarize financial statement items or present calculations in a systematic manner. Such presentations can help students identify relationships and differences that may be difficult to recognize within lengthy textual explanations. Diagrams and flowcharts may further assist students in understanding accounting processes. Some accounting procedures involve several interconnected stages, and visual representations can show the sequence of activities more clearly. Students may use diagrams to understand relationships between accounting records, transactions, adjustments and financial statements. This can help them develop a more organized mental representation of complex accounting processes. The study also recognizes the importance of practical illustrations based on realistic business situations. Students may understand accounting concepts more effectively when textbook examples resemble situations that occur in actual organizations. Practical scenarios can help students recognize the relevance of accounting principles and understand why particular accounting treatments are required. They can also encourage students to apply theoretical knowledge to unfamiliar accounting situations. The findings of the study will be useful to accounting students because they may increase awareness of the importance of using textbook illustrations as learning tools. Students should not simply read the explanations provided in textbooks but should carefully study the examples, tables, diagrams, calculations and other visual representations accompanying the concepts. They can reproduce worked examples, attempt similar exercises and compare their solutions with the illustrations provided in the textbooks. This approach may strengthen conceptual understanding and improve problem-solving ability. The findings will also be beneficial to accounting lecturers in Nigerian polytechnics. The study may provide lecturers with information about the role of textbook illustrations in supporting students’ understanding of complex accounting concepts. Lecturers can recommend textbooks that contain adequate and high-quality illustrations and can supplement textbook illustrations with additional examples during classroom instruction. Where students encounter difficulties with textbook examples, lecturers can provide alternative explanations or develop simplified illustrations to reinforce learning. The study will further be relevant to accounting textbook authors and publishers. The findings may encourage authors to place greater emphasis on the quality and educational usefulness of illustrations when developing accounting textbooks. Illustrations should not be included merely for presentation purposes; they should contribute directly to students’ understanding of the concepts being discussed. Examples should be accurate, logically arranged, relevant to the topic and sufficiently detailed to allow students to follow the accounting process. The clarity of textbook illustrations is particularly important. An illustration that is technically correct but poorly presented may not effectively support learning. Accounting examples should therefore use clear formats, appropriate headings, understandable calculations and logical explanations. Where diagrams, charts or tables are used, they should be properly labelled and directly connected to the accompanying explanation. Clear presentation can reduce confusion and make complex accounting information easier to process. The study also highlights the importance of progressive examples. Complex accounting concepts may be difficult when students are introduced immediately to advanced problems. Textbooks can begin with simple illustrations and gradually increase the level of difficulty. This approach allows students to develop foundational knowledge before moving to more complicated accounting situations. Progressive examples may therefore improve students’ confidence and ability to solve advanced accounting problems. The relevance of illustrations to the Nigerian accounting education context is also important. Accounting textbooks used by students should contain examples that reflect realistic business activities and accounting practices relevant to their educational environment. While international accounting examples can provide useful knowledge, locally understandable illustrations can make accounting concepts more meaningful to students and help them connect classroom learning with practical business situations. The study may also have implications for students’ performance in examinations. Accounting examination questions often require students to apply concepts to unfamiliar situations rather than reproduce textbook definitions. Regular exposure to worked examples and practical illustrations can help students develop the ability to recognize the appropriate procedure for solving different types of accounting problems. Students may also become more familiar with the presentation formats commonly required in accounting examinations. Accounting textbook illustrations can further support independent learning. Students may not always have immediate access to lecturers when studying outside the classroom. Detailed examples can provide guidance that allows students to review difficult concepts independently. Students can examine the explanation, follow the illustrated procedure and attempt related exercises. This may reduce dependence on classroom explanations and encourage self-directed learning. Technology can also enhance the use of accounting illustrations. Electronic textbooks and digital accounting resources may incorporate interactive diagrams, spreadsheets, videos, animations and other forms of visual explanation. These resources can complement traditional textbook illustrations and provide students with additional ways of understanding difficult concepts. However, the fundamental principles of clarity, accuracy and relevance remain important regardless of whether illustrations are presented in printed or digital form. The study further recognizes that illustrations should complement, rather than replace, conceptual explanations. Students need to understand the accounting principles underlying a procedure rather than simply copy the steps shown in an example. Lecturers and textbook authors should therefore explain why particular accounting treatments are applied and connect each illustration to the relevant accounting concept. This can help students transfer their knowledge from familiar examples to new situations. Assessment activities can reinforce learning through illustrations. Lecturers can provide students with accounting problems that are similar to, but different from, textbook examples. Students can then demonstrate whether they understand the underlying concept by applying the appropriate procedure independently. Feedback on these exercises can help students identify mistakes and correct misunderstandings. Based on the expected findings, the study recommends that Nigerian polytechnics should encourage the use of accounting textbooks containing clear, accurate, relevant and adequately detailed illustrations. Accounting departments should carefully consider the quality of examples and visual learning materials when recommending textbooks for students. Textbooks should contain sufficient worked examples, practical exercises, tables, diagrams and other representations that support the learning of complex accounting concepts. The study further recommends that accounting lecturers should supplement textbook illustrations with classroom demonstrations and practical examples. Difficult accounting concepts should be explained progressively, beginning with basic illustrations before students are introduced to more complex problems. Lecturers should also encourage students to reproduce examples, attempt related exercises and explain the accounting principles underlying the procedures. Accounting textbook authors and publishers should ensure that illustrations are pedagogically meaningful and aligned with learning objectives. Examples should be accurate, current, logically organized and sufficiently comprehensive to demonstrate the application of accounting principles. Textbook reviewers should also assess whether illustrations genuinely contribute to conceptual understanding rather than simply increasing the visual appearance of the textbook. Students should be encouraged to make active use of textbook illustrations during their studies. They should study worked examples carefully, identify the accounting principles involved, practice similar problems and seek clarification when they encounter difficulties. Students should also compare textbook examples with lecture notes and other reliable accounting resources to strengthen their understanding. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of accounting textbook illustrations in improving students’ understanding of complex accounting concepts in Nigerian polytechnics. Illustrations such as worked examples, tables, diagrams, charts, accounting formats and practical business scenarios can make difficult accounting concepts more concrete and accessible. When illustrations are clear, accurate, relevant, progressive and properly connected to theoretical explanations, they can support conceptual understanding, independent learning, problem-solving and examination preparation. Strengthening the quality and effective use of accounting textbook illustrations can therefore contribute to improved learning outcomes and stronger accounting competence among students in Nigerian polytechnics.
