Effect of Accounting Workplace Scenario Exercises on Students’ Professional Decision-Making Skills in Nigeria

Abstract

Professional decision-making is an essential competency for Accounting Education students because accounting professionals are required to evaluate financial information, identify relevant alternatives, interpret accounting situations, apply professional judgment, and make appropriate decisions in different workplace contexts. However, Accounting Education students in Nigeria may have limited exposure to realistic accounting workplace situations during their academic training, which may create a gap between theoretical classroom knowledge and the practical decision-making demands of accounting employment. Accounting Workplace Scenario Exercises provide students with opportunities to analyse simulated workplace situations, evaluate accounting information, identify problems, consider alternative courses of action, and make decisions based on accounting principles and professional requirements. Such exercises may strengthen students’ analytical judgment, problem-solving ability, confidence, and readiness to handle accounting responsibilities. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Accounting Workplace Scenario Exercises on students’ professional decision-making skills in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical competencies through concrete experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge and practical skills improves students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Accounting Workplace Scenario Exercises may influence students’ professional decision-making skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities and polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select institutions, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, professional decision-making skills assessment scales, workplace scenario tasks, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, case-based accounting exercises, decision-analysis tasks, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Accounting Workplace Scenario Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as workplace problem identification, accounting problem recognition, information gathering, financial-information interpretation, transaction analysis, document examination, evidence evaluation, issue identification, alternative identification, alternative comparison, consequence assessment, risk assessment, professional judgment, accounting-principle application, policy interpretation, procedure interpretation, rule application, ethical consideration, professional responsibility, compliance consideration, internal-control consideration, financial-impact assessment, cost consideration, benefit consideration, uncertainty assessment, decision prioritization, decision selection, decision justification, action planning, implementation planning, decision documentation, decision communication, stakeholder consideration, client consideration, customer consideration, management consideration, colleague consideration, supplier consideration, auditor consideration, regulatory consideration, confidentiality consideration, data-protection consideration, conflict-of-interest recognition, fraud-risk recognition, error recognition, irregularity recognition, financial-reporting consideration, expenditure consideration, revenue consideration, cash-management consideration, inventory consideration, payroll consideration, taxation consideration, budgeting consideration, banking consideration, reconciliation consideration, auditing consideration, documentation consideration, records-management consideration, accounting-software consideration, digital-accounting consideration, technology-related decision-making, time-pressure decision-making, resource-limitation decision-making, competing-priority decision-making, incomplete-information decision-making, ambiguous-situation decision-making, changing-condition decision-making, urgent-decision making, routine-decision making, non-routine decision-making, individual decision-making, team decision-making, communication-based decision-making, negotiation consideration, escalation consideration, consultation consideration, referral consideration, decision review, decision monitoring, outcome evaluation, corrective action, feedback utilization, reflective practice, scenario discussion, case analysis, role-play activities, group problem-solving, individual problem-solving, guided practice, practical demonstrations, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, and progressively challenging workplace scenarios. Students’ professional decision-making skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to identify workplace accounting problems, gather relevant information, interpret financial information, analyse transactions, examine accounting documents, evaluate evidence, identify key issues, generate alternatives, compare available alternatives, assess consequences, evaluate risks, apply professional judgment, apply accounting principles, interpret policies and procedures, consider ethical implications, demonstrate professional responsibility, consider compliance requirements, evaluate internal controls, assess financial implications, consider costs and benefits, assess uncertainty, prioritize decisions, select appropriate actions, justify decisions, develop action plans, plan implementation, document decisions, communicate decisions, consider stakeholders, respond appropriately to client and customer situations, consider management requirements, collaborate with colleagues, consider supplier issues, respond to audit requirements, consider regulatory requirements, maintain confidentiality, protect financial information, identify conflicts of interest, recognize fraud risks, identify accounting errors, identify irregularities, consider financial-reporting implications, evaluate expenditure decisions, assess revenue-related decisions, manage cash-related decisions, evaluate inventory-related situations, consider payroll issues, evaluate taxation situations, analyse budgeting decisions, evaluate banking situations, resolve reconciliation issues, respond to auditing situations, manage accounting documentation, maintain financial records, use accounting software appropriately, make digital-accounting decisions, respond to technology-related accounting problems, make decisions under time pressure, make appropriate decisions despite resource limitations, prioritize competing tasks, make decisions using incomplete information, respond to ambiguous situations, adapt decisions to changing conditions, handle urgent situations, distinguish routine from non-routine decisions, make independent decisions, participate effectively in team decisions, communicate decisions professionally, negotiate where appropriate, escalate unresolved matters, seek consultation when necessary, refer specialized matters appropriately, review decisions, monitor outcomes, evaluate decision effectiveness, take corrective action, use feedback, reflect on previous decisions, demonstrate accuracy, demonstrate analytical ability, demonstrate critical thinking, demonstrate problem-solving ability, demonstrate professional judgment, demonstrate ethical awareness, demonstrate accountability, demonstrate responsibility, demonstrate confidence, demonstrate adaptability, demonstrate communication competence, demonstrate decision-making competence, and overall professional decision-making competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Accounting Workplace Scenario Exercises, practical experiences, and professional decision-making skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Accounting Workplace Scenario Exercises on students’ professional decision-making skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, professional decision-making skill scores before and after participation in the scenario exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Accounting Workplace Scenario Exercises have a significant positive effect on students’ professional decision-making skills in Nigeria.
