Effect of Consolidated Financial Statements Instruction on Students’ Ability to Identify Group Accounting Relationships in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
Consolidated financial statements instruction is an important component of advanced accounting education because it equips students with the knowledge required to understand financial relationships among entities within a group of companies. Students’ ability to identify group accounting relationships is essential for determining the appropriate accounting treatment of parent companies, subsidiaries, associates, and other related entities. However, students may experience difficulties in recognizing the nature of relationships that exist between companies and determining the accounting implications of such relationships. This study therefore examines the effect of consolidated financial statements instruction on students’ ability to identify group accounting relationships in Nigerian universities. Consolidated financial statements instruction involves teaching the principles and procedures used in combining the financial information of related entities for reporting purposes. The instruction exposes students to concepts such as parent and subsidiary relationships, control, ownership interests, group structures, and the circumstances under which entities are included in or excluded from consolidated financial statements. It also provides students with opportunities to interpret ownership and control information and apply relevant accounting principles when analyzing group structures. Students’ ability to identify group accounting relationships refers to their capacity to recognize and distinguish the relationships that exist among entities within a business group. This includes identifying parent-subsidiary relationships, determining whether control exists, recognizing associate relationships, and interpreting ownership information presented in accounting situations. Adequate competence in this area is important because correct identification of group relationships provides the basis for applying appropriate consolidation procedures and preparing reliable financial information. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian universities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on consolidated financial statements instruction and students’ ability to identify group accounting relationships. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, while the hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that consolidated financial statements instruction has a significant positive effect on students’ ability to identify group accounting relationships. Effective instruction is expected to improve students’ understanding of control, ownership, group structures, and relationships among related entities, thereby enhancing their ability to correctly interpret accounting situations involving business groups. The findings are expected to have important implications for the teaching and learning of advanced accounting in Nigerian universities. Accounting lecturers may need to emphasize practical group-structure illustrations, ownership scenarios, case studies, and exercises involving parent and subsidiary relationships. The use of simplified group structures and transaction-based learning activities may also help students develop a clearer understanding of how different accounting relationships are identified. The study is expected to benefit Accounting Education students, accounting lecturers, university administrators, curriculum developers, and other stakeholders in accounting education. Students may develop stronger analytical and practical skills in identifying group relationships, while lecturers may gain useful insights for improving instructional approaches. Curriculum developers may also use the findings to strengthen the teaching of consolidation and group accounting concepts within accounting education programmes. The study recommends that accounting lecturers should adopt practical, analytical, and learner-centred approaches when teaching consolidated financial statements. Greater emphasis should be placed on group-structure diagrams, ownership and control exercises, case-based learning, and practical questions involving different business relationships. The study concludes that effective consolidated financial statements instruction can enhance students’ ability to identify group accounting relationships and strengthen their competence in advanced accounting.
