Effect of Data Collection Training on Research Competence among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Research competence is an essential skill for Accounting Education students because effective accounting practice, teaching, and academic inquiry require the ability to collect, organize, evaluate, and use relevant information appropriately. Accounting Education students are expected to develop competence in identifying research problems, selecting appropriate data sources, designing data collection instruments, gathering reliable information, managing research data, and applying appropriate procedures in conducting academic and professional investigations. However, inadequate practical exposure to systematic data collection procedures may limit students’ ability to conduct research effectively and may create a gap between theoretical research knowledge and practical research skills. Data Collection Training provides students with structured opportunities to develop practical skills in identifying sources of information, designing and administering research instruments, conducting interviews and observations, collecting primary and secondary data, recording responses, managing research information, and maintaining data quality. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Data Collection Training on research competence among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop research skills through practical experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge and practical skills enhances students’ productivity, academic performance, employability, and professional competence. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Data Collection Training may influence research competence among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities and polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select institutions, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, research competence assessment scales, practical data collection tasks, observation checklists, instrument-development exercises, interview exercises, fieldwork assignments, research-data management tasks, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Data Collection Training will be assessed using indicators such as identification of research data needs, identification of appropriate data sources, primary data collection, secondary data collection, questionnaire design, interview-guide preparation, observation-guide preparation, sampling procedures, respondent identification, instrument administration, interview techniques, observation techniques, document review, fieldwork procedures, online data collection, electronic questionnaire administration, response recording, data coding, data entry, data organization, data verification, data cleaning, missing-data identification, response completeness, data accuracy, source verification, confidentiality, informed participation, ethical data collection, secure data handling, field-note preparation, research documentation, data storage, data retrieval, data management, pilot testing, instrument revision, fieldwork planning, time management, communication with respondents, professional conduct, research-team coordination, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group activities, case studies, role-play activities, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback, and reflective research practice. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Data Collection Training has a significant positive effect on research competence among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and practical data collection training are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify appropriate data sources, select suitable collection methods, develop research instruments, gather reliable information, organize research data, and maintain data quality. Training in questionnaire design may improve students’ ability to develop clear and relevant research questions. Interview training may strengthen students’ ability to obtain information systematically from respondents. Observation exercises may improve students’ ability to record relevant information accurately. Document-review activities may strengthen students’ ability to extract useful information from existing records. Primary and secondary data collection exercises may improve students’ understanding of different sources of research evidence. Sampling activities may strengthen students’ ability to identify appropriate respondents and apply suitable selection procedures. Practical instrument-administration activities may improve students’ confidence and accuracy during fieldwork. Data-coding and data-entry exercises may strengthen students’ ability to prepare information for analysis. Data-verification and data-cleaning activities may improve students’ ability to identify incomplete, inconsistent, or inaccurate information. Ethical data collection training may strengthen students’ awareness of confidentiality, informed participation, responsible data handling, and protection of research information. Fieldwork planning and time-management activities may improve students’ ability to organize research activities effectively. Communication exercises may strengthen students’ ability to interact professionally with respondents. Repeated practical activities, guided instruction, feedback, and reflective practice are expected to improve students’ confidence, independence, accuracy, problem-solving ability, and overall research competence. However, the effectiveness of Data Collection Training may be constrained by limited access to research facilities, inadequate practical training periods, large class sizes, insufficient research equipment, poor internet connectivity, unreliable electricity supply, limited access to fieldwork opportunities, inadequate lecturer supervision, outdated research materials, limited access to statistical and data-management software, low student participation, and insufficient integration of practical data collection activities into Accounting Education programmes. The study therefore expects structured, practical, supervised, and adequately resourced Data Collection Training to contribute significantly to improved research competence among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Data Collection Training, research competence, accounting education, research methodology, practical research education, questionnaire design, interview techniques, observation methods, fieldwork, primary data collection, secondary data collection, research instrument administration, data coding, data entry, data verification, data cleaning, research ethics, research documentation, data management, research skills, academic competence, professional competence, workplace readiness, employability skills, Accounting Education students, Nigerian universities, Nigerian polytechnics, and Accounting Education in Nigeria. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating practical Data Collection Training into Accounting Education programmes, increasing students’ exposure to real and simulated fieldwork, strengthening research instrument-development skills, improving ethical and accurate data collection practices, providing appropriate research facilities and digital tools, increasing lecturer supervision and feedback, and aligning Accounting Education programmes with the research and information-management competencies required in contemporary academic and professional environments in Nigeria.
