Effect of Departmental Transfer Exercises on Students’ Departmental Accounting Skills in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Departmental accounting skills are important practical competencies for Accounting Education students because organizations often operate through multiple departments that require separate recording, allocation, transfer, and reporting of financial information. Effective departmental accounting involves identifying departmental transactions, recording interdepartmental transfers, allocating income and expenses, preparing departmental accounts, maintaining appropriate supporting documentation, and determining the financial performance of individual departments. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics may have limited opportunities to practise departmental accounting procedures through realistic accounting activities, which may create a gap between theoretical knowledge and practical competence. Departmental Transfer Exercises provide students with opportunities to simulate the movement of goods, expenses, revenues, assets, and other financial items between departments while applying appropriate accounting procedures. Such exercises may strengthen students’ ability to identify, document, record, classify, reconcile, and report departmental transactions accurately. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Departmental Transfer Exercises on students’ departmental accounting skills in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical accounting competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant accounting knowledge and practical skills improves students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional accounting responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Departmental Transfer Exercises may influence students’ departmental accounting skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, departmental accounting skills assessment scales, simulated departmental transfer documents, practical accounting tasks, departmental account exercises, performance rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Departmental Transfer Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as identification of departments, identification of transferring department, identification of receiving department, identification of transferred items, transfer authorization, transfer documentation, transfer voucher preparation, transfer-note preparation, transaction-date recording, transfer-reference recording, description of transferred items, quantity recording, value recording, departmental coding, account classification, transfer pricing, transfer valuation, interdepartmental transaction recording, departmental income recording, departmental expense recording, departmental asset recording, departmental liability recording, departmental stock transfer, interdepartmental purchases, interdepartmental sales, departmental service charges, departmental expense allocation, shared-cost allocation, common-expense allocation, departmental revenue allocation, departmental overhead allocation, departmental salary allocation, departmental utility allocation, departmental rent allocation, departmental depreciation allocation, departmental inventory allocation, departmental profit allocation, departmental loss allocation, departmental account preparation, departmental trading-account preparation, departmental profit-and-loss-account preparation, departmental balance-sheet preparation, departmental statement preparation, departmental ledger preparation, departmental journal-entry preparation, departmental posting, departmental transfer-entry preparation, reciprocal-entry preparation, contra-entry preparation, transfer reconciliation, departmental account reconciliation, interdepartmental reconciliation, transfer-balance reconciliation, transaction matching, document verification, supporting-document verification, duplicate-transfer identification, missing-transfer identification, unauthorized-transfer identification, incorrect-department identification, incorrect-amount identification, incorrect-quantity identification, incorrect-value identification, incorrect-code identification, incorrect-reference identification, recording-error identification, transfer-error correction, adjustment-entry preparation, departmental variance identification, departmental performance analysis, departmental income comparison, departmental expense comparison, departmental profitability analysis, departmental cost analysis, departmental revenue analysis, departmental budget comparison, departmental expenditure monitoring, departmental reporting, departmental financial-summary preparation, departmental document filing, transfer-document indexing, document retrieval, transaction tracking, audit-trail maintenance, internal-control procedures, authorization controls, segregation of duties, verification controls, approval procedures, accounting-software activities, spreadsheet-based departmental accounting, digital transfer records, electronic transfer documentation, electronic approval procedures, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group exercises, case studies, role-play activities, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging departmental accounting scenarios. Students’ departmental accounting skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to identify departments, identify transferring and receiving departments, identify transferred items, obtain appropriate authorization, prepare transfer documentation, prepare transfer vouchers and notes, record transaction dates and references, describe transferred items, record quantities and values, apply departmental codes, classify accounts correctly, determine transfer values, record interdepartmental transactions, record departmental income, expenses, assets, and liabilities, record departmental stock transfers, account for interdepartmental purchases and sales, record departmental service charges, allocate shared costs, allocate common expenses, allocate departmental revenues, allocate overheads, allocate salaries, utilities, rent, depreciation, and inventory costs, allocate departmental profit or loss, prepare departmental accounts, prepare departmental trading accounts, prepare departmental profit and loss accounts, prepare departmental statements, maintain departmental ledgers, prepare journal entries, post departmental transactions, prepare transfer entries, prepare reciprocal entries, prepare contra entries, reconcile departmental transfers, reconcile departmental accounts, reconcile interdepartmental balances, match transactions, verify documents, verify supporting evidence, identify duplicate transfers, identify missing transfers, identify unauthorized transfers, identify incorrect departments, identify incorrect amounts, quantities, values, codes, and references, identify recording errors, correct transfer errors, prepare adjustment entries, identify departmental variances, analyse departmental performance, compare departmental income and expenses, assess departmental profitability, analyse departmental costs and revenues, compare departmental budgets and actual expenditure, monitor departmental expenditure, prepare departmental reports, summarize departmental financial information, file transfer documents, index records, retrieve documents, track transactions, maintain audit trails, apply internal controls, follow authorization procedures, observe segregation of duties, apply verification controls, follow approval procedures, use accounting software, use spreadsheets for departmental accounting, maintain digital departmental records, prepare electronic transfer documentation, follow electronic approval procedures, demonstrate accuracy, demonstrate attention to detail, demonstrate numerical competence, demonstrate analytical ability, demonstrate problem-solving ability, demonstrate accounting competence, demonstrate digital competence, demonstrate decision-making ability, demonstrate confidence, demonstrate efficiency, demonstrate accountability, demonstrate responsibility, demonstrate professionalism, demonstrate adaptability, and overall departmental accounting competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Departmental Transfer Exercises, practical experiences, and departmental accounting skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Departmental Transfer Exercises on students’ departmental accounting skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, departmental accounting skill scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Departmental Transfer Exercises have a significant positive effect on students’ departmental accounting skills in Nigerian polytechnics.
