Effect of Depreciation Exercises on Students’ Fixed-Asset Accounting Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria

 

Abstract

Depreciation is an important component of accounting education because it enables students to understand the systematic allocation of the depreciable amount of fixed assets over their useful economic lives. Fixed-asset accounting skills are essential for Accounting Education students because accurate depreciation calculations and recording procedures affect the carrying amount of non-current assets, depreciation expenses, accumulated depreciation, profit, and financial reporting. However, Accounting Education students in Nigeria may experience difficulties developing adequate fixed-asset accounting skills when depreciation is taught mainly through theoretical explanations and routine calculations without sufficient opportunities to apply different depreciation methods and analyse realistic asset-related transactions. Depreciation Exercises provide students with practical opportunities to calculate depreciation, prepare depreciation schedules, record depreciation entries, update asset registers, determine carrying amounts, account for asset acquisition and disposal, and analyse the financial effects of depreciation. Such activities may strengthen students' computational accuracy, analytical reasoning, asset-recording ability, and application of fixed-asset accounting principles. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Depreciation Exercises on students' fixed-asset accounting skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Cognitive Learning Theory. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes the active construction of knowledge through prior knowledge, interaction with accounting information, practical activities, and problem-solving experiences. Cognitive Learning Theory focuses on how learners process, organize, calculate, interpret, and apply information when determining depreciation and accounting for fixed assets. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Depreciation Exercises may influence students' fixed-asset accounting skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected public and private universities and polytechnics across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, institutions, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible Accounting Education students. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students' fixed-asset accounting scores before and after exposure to Depreciation Exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional accounting instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Depreciation Exercises have a significant positive effect on students' fixed-asset accounting skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and practically oriented Depreciation Exercises are expected to demonstrate greater accuracy and competence in calculating, recording, adjusting, and reporting depreciation and fixed-asset transactions than students receiving conventional instruction. Asset-identification activities may help students distinguish depreciable fixed assets from other accounting items. Asset-cost exercises may strengthen students' ability to determine the appropriate cost to be capitalized when an asset is acquired. Depreciable-amount activities may help students understand the relationship between asset cost, residual value, and the amount subject to depreciation. Useful-life and residual-value exercises may strengthen students' ability to determine the appropriate assumptions for depreciation calculations. Straight-line depreciation exercises may help students understand the allocation of depreciable cost evenly over an asset's useful life. Reducing-balance exercises may enable students to calculate depreciation based on the declining carrying amount of an asset. Units-of-production activities may strengthen students' understanding of depreciation based on actual usage or production levels. Depreciation-rate exercises may improve students' ability to determine appropriate rates and apply them consistently. Annual, monthly, and part-year depreciation activities may help students accurately calculate depreciation for different accounting periods. Accumulated-depreciation exercises may strengthen students' ability to determine the total depreciation recognized over an asset's useful life. Carrying-amount activities may help students understand the relationship between original asset cost, accumulated depreciation, and the remaining carrying amount. Depreciation-schedule preparation may provide students with a systematic method for tracking asset cost, depreciation expense, accumulated depreciation, and carrying amounts over several periods. Fixed-asset register activities may strengthen students' ability to maintain detailed records of asset acquisitions, depreciation, transfers, and disposals. Journal-entry activities may enable students to translate depreciation calculations into appropriate accounting records. Asset-acquisition activities may help students distinguish capital expenditure from other expenses and determine the appropriate amount to recognize as an asset. Asset-improvement activities may strengthen students' understanding of expenditures that increase an asset's future economic benefits.
