Effect of Depreciation Methods Instruction on Students’ Ability to Calculate Asset Values among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Depreciation methods instruction is an important component of accounting education because it equips students with the knowledge and skills required to determine the appropriate value of non-current assets over their useful lives. Depreciation accounting involves allocating the depreciable amount of an asset systematically over its estimated useful life, and different methods may produce different depreciation charges and carrying amounts. Students therefore need adequate understanding of depreciation methods to accurately calculate asset values and apply appropriate accounting procedures. This study examines the effect of depreciation methods instruction on students’ ability to calculate asset values among accounting education students in Nigeria. Depreciation methods instruction exposes students to the principles and procedures associated with commonly used methods of depreciation, including the straight-line method, reducing balance method, and other appropriate approaches. Through instruction and practical exercises, students can learn how to determine depreciable amounts, calculate depreciation expenses, and establish the carrying value of assets after depreciation. Understanding the differences among depreciation methods can also help students select and apply the appropriate method when solving financial accounting problems. The ability to calculate asset values accurately is an essential accounting skill because incorrect depreciation calculations can result in inaccurate asset values and financial information. Students need to understand the relationship between the cost of an asset, accumulated depreciation, depreciation expense, and its carrying amount. Effective instruction supported by practical examples and calculation exercises may enable students to apply depreciation principles more accurately and develop stronger numerical and analytical skills in financial accounting. The study will adopt a survey research design and focus on accounting education students in selected tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on students’ exposure to depreciation methods instruction and their ability to calculate asset values. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, and the hypothesis formulated for the study will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that depreciation methods instruction has a significant positive effect on students’ ability to calculate asset values. Students who receive adequate instruction and practical exposure to depreciation methods are expected to demonstrate improved ability to calculate depreciation expenses, accumulated depreciation, and carrying amounts of non-current assets. Regular calculation exercises may also help students reduce computational errors and develop greater confidence in applying depreciation procedures to accounting problems. The findings are expected to have important implications for the teaching and learning of financial accounting. Accounting lecturers may be encouraged to combine theoretical explanations of depreciation with practical calculation exercises and transaction-based examples. Classroom activities involving different asset costs, useful lives, residual values, and depreciation methods can provide students with opportunities to understand how depreciation affects asset values and financial accounting records. The study will be beneficial to accounting education students, lecturers, curriculum developers, university administrators, and other stakeholders in accounting education. Students may develop stronger practical skills in depreciation calculation and asset valuation, while lecturers may gain insight into the importance of effective depreciation instruction in improving students’ accounting competence. Curriculum developers may also use the findings to strengthen the practical treatment of depreciation and asset valuation within accounting education programmes. The study recommends that accounting education programmes should strengthen depreciation methods instruction through regular numerical exercises, practical illustrations, comparative depreciation problems, and guided classroom activities. Lecturers should expose students to different depreciation methods and provide timely feedback on their calculations. The study concludes that effective depreciation methods instruction can significantly improve students’ ability to calculate asset values and contribute to the development of stronger practical financial accounting skills.
