Effect of Financial Influencer Content on Accounting Students’ Financial Decision-Making Skills in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
Financial influencer content has become an increasingly accessible source of financial information among young people, including university students. Financial influencers use social media platforms to share information, opinions, recommendations, and educational content relating to saving, investing, budgeting, financial markets, and other financial activities. While such content may expose students to practical financial knowledge, the accuracy and quality of information presented can vary. This study therefore examines the effect of financial influencer content on Accounting students’ financial decision-making skills in Nigerian Universities. Financial influencer content refers to financial information and recommendations shared by individuals through digital and social media platforms with the aim of educating, informing, or influencing audiences on financial matters. Such content may cover investment opportunities, personal budgeting, saving practices, stock market activities, financial planning, and management of personal funds. Regular exposure to this content may provide Accounting students with additional financial information and practical examples that complement the knowledge acquired through formal accounting education. Accounting students’ financial decision-making skills refer to their ability to evaluate financial information, compare available financial alternatives, assess potential risks and benefits, and make appropriate financial choices. These skills are important because accounting students are expected to possess the ability to apply financial knowledge to practical situations involving saving, investment, expenditure, and resource allocation. Exposure to relevant and understandable financial influencer content may improve students’ awareness of financial alternatives and strengthen their ability to evaluate financial decisions. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise Accounting students in selected Nigerian Universities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ exposure to financial influencer content and their financial decision-making skills. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures, while the data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and relevant inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of financial influencer content on students’ financial decision-making skills. The study is expected to establish that financial influencer content has a significant effect on Accounting students’ financial decision-making skills. Students who frequently engage with relevant financial content are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify financial alternatives, evaluate available information, assess financial risks, and make informed financial choices. The study may also indicate that exposure to practical financial discussions through digital platforms can complement students’ formal accounting knowledge and increase their awareness of contemporary financial issues. The findings are expected to have important implications for financial education and the development of practical financial skills among Accounting students. Accounting educators may need to recognize the growing influence of digital financial information and incorporate appropriate social media-based financial examples into classroom learning. Students should also be encouraged to critically evaluate financial influencer content by considering the reliability, relevance, and credibility of information before using it to make financial decisions. The study will be beneficial to Accounting students, accounting lecturers, university administrators, curriculum planners, financial educators, and other stakeholders interested in improving students’ financial capabilities. Students may gain greater awareness of how digital financial information can contribute to financial decision-making, while lecturers may gain insight into contemporary sources of financial information used by students. Curriculum planners may also use the findings to strengthen financial literacy and practical decision-making components of accounting programmes. The study recommends that Nigerian Universities should strengthen financial education by incorporating practical analysis of digital financial information and social media financial content into relevant accounting and finance courses. Accounting lecturers should encourage students to critically assess financial influencer content and distinguish reliable financial information from unsupported recommendations. Students should develop the habit of verifying financial information before making decisions based on it. The study concludes that financial influencer content can contribute to the development of Accounting students’ financial decision-making skills when the information is critically evaluated and appropriately applied.
