Effect of Financial Scam Simulation on Accounting Students’ Ability to Identify Fraudulent Financial Activities in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
The increasing occurrence of fraudulent financial activities has created a need for accounting students to develop practical skills for recognizing suspicious transactions and financial deception. Financial scam simulation provides students with realistic or simulated scenarios through which they can examine fraudulent messages, deceptive financial offers, suspicious transactions, and other indicators of financial misconduct. However, traditional classroom instruction may not always provide sufficient practical exposure to the identification of financial scams. This study examines the effect of financial scam simulation on accounting students’ ability to identify fraudulent financial activities in Nigerian universities. The study is aimed at determining whether exposure to financial scam simulations improves students’ ability to recognize and distinguish fraudulent financial activities from legitimate financial transactions. Financial scam simulation involves the use of structured, controlled, and educational scenarios that replicate common characteristics of fraudulent financial activities without exposing students to actual fraudulent operations. Through simulated cases, students may examine suspicious payment requests, false investment opportunities, misleading financial communications, identity-related deception, and unusual transaction patterns. Simulation activities can provide opportunities for students to observe warning signs, evaluate financial information, discuss possible risks, and practice appropriate responses. This practical approach can make financial fraud education more interactive and provide students with experience that may be difficult to obtain through theoretical explanations alone. Students’ ability to identify fraudulent financial activities refers to their capacity to recognize warning signs and distinguish suspicious or deceptive financial activities from legitimate transactions. This ability may involve examining the credibility of financial information, identifying unusual transaction characteristics, recognizing deceptive communication, and evaluating inconsistencies in financial claims. Financial scam simulation can strengthen this ability by allowing students to repeatedly practice identifying fraud indicators in realistic learning situations. Exposure to different simulated scenarios may therefore improve students’ confidence, analytical attention, and practical understanding of fraudulent financial activities. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design. The population will consist of Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian universities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected and assigned to relevant instructional groups. Data will be collected using a structured financial scam identification assessment designed to measure students’ ability to identify fraudulent financial activities before and after exposure to the simulation intervention. The assessment instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures. Data obtained from the study will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique to determine the effect of financial scam simulation on students’ ability to identify fraudulent financial activities. The study is expected to establish that financial scam simulation has a positive effect on accounting students’ ability to identify fraudulent financial activities. Students exposed to financial scam simulation are expected to demonstrate improved ability to recognize suspicious financial patterns, deceptive communications, questionable financial requests, and other indicators of fraudulent activities. The study may further establish that practical exposure to simulated fraud scenarios provides students with stronger opportunities to apply theoretical accounting and fraud-related knowledge when evaluating financial situations. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of Accounting Education in universities. Accounting lecturers may need to complement conventional classroom instruction with practical simulation activities that expose students to different financial fraud scenarios. Case-based exercises, simulated transaction reviews, digital examples, and guided fraud-identification activities may help students develop practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge. Such instructional approaches may also encourage active participation, critical examination of financial information, and stronger awareness of emerging forms of financial deception. The study is expected to be significant to accounting students, lecturers, university management, curriculum developers, fraud education practitioners, and other stakeholders in accounting education. Students may benefit from improved practical skills for recognizing fraudulent financial activities, while lecturers may gain insight into the usefulness of simulation-based approaches for teaching fraud-related accounting concepts. Curriculum developers may use the findings to strengthen practical fraud identification components within Accounting Education programmes. The study may also contribute to preparing accounting graduates who can apply appropriate analytical skills when encountering potentially fraudulent financial activities in professional settings. The study recommends that universities should incorporate financial scam simulation and other practical fraud-identification activities into appropriate Accounting Education courses. Lecturers should develop controlled learning scenarios that expose students to different forms and indicators of fraudulent financial activities while emphasizing ethical and responsible responses. Universities should also support the use of practical and technology-supported learning resources for fraud education. The study concludes that financial scam simulation can provide an effective instructional approach for strengthening accounting students’ ability to identify fraudulent financial activities and improving their preparedness for fraud-related challenges in accounting practice.
