Effect of Foreign Currency Transaction Exercises on Students’ Foreign Exchange Accounting Skills in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
Foreign currency transactions are an important aspect of contemporary accounting as businesses increasingly engage in international trade, foreign investments, cross-border payments, imports, exports, and other transactions involving currencies other than the domestic currency. Accounting students therefore require practical knowledge of foreign exchange rates, currency conversion, transaction recognition, exchange differences, and appropriate accounting treatment of foreign currency transactions. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities may have limited opportunities to practise these procedures using realistic foreign currency transactions, potentially creating a gap between theoretical knowledge and practical accounting competence. Foreign Currency Transaction Exercises provide students with opportunities to analyse exchange rates, convert foreign currency amounts, record transactions, recognize exchange gains and losses, and prepare appropriate accounting entries using simulated business situations. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Foreign Currency Transaction Exercises on students’ foreign exchange accounting skills in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical accounting competence through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant accounting knowledge and practical skills improves students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional accounting responsibilities. Collectively, these theories provide a suitable framework for explaining how Foreign Currency Transaction Exercises may influence students’ foreign exchange accounting skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, foreign exchange accounting skills assessment scales, simulated foreign currency transaction exercises, exchange-rate conversion tasks, practical accounting performance rubrics, observation checklists, journal-entry exercises, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Foreign Currency Transaction Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as foreign currency identification, exchange-rate interpretation, currency conversion, transaction-date exchange rates, spot exchange rates, historical exchange rates, closing exchange rates, average exchange rates, exchange-rate quotation, direct quotation, indirect quotation, currency appreciation, currency depreciation, foreign currency purchases, foreign currency sales, imports, exports, foreign currency receivables, foreign currency payables, foreign currency cash transactions, foreign currency bank transactions, foreign currency invoices, foreign currency settlements, foreign currency loans, foreign currency investments, foreign currency expenses, foreign currency revenues, initial transaction recognition, subsequent measurement, closing-date valuation, settlement-date valuation, exchange differences, realized exchange gains, realized exchange losses, unrealized exchange gains, unrealized exchange losses, foreign exchange gain recognition, foreign exchange loss recognition, transaction conversion, accounting-entry preparation, journal entries, ledger posting, receivable recording, payable recording, cash recording, bank recording, expense recording, revenue recording, inventory recording, asset recording, liability recording, loan recording, investment recording, foreign exchange adjustment, year-end adjustment, revaluation procedures, financial statement presentation, disclosure procedures, supporting-document preparation, foreign currency invoice analysis, payment documentation, bank advice analysis, exchange-rate evidence, transaction verification, reconciliation, error identification, error correction, foreign exchange risk awareness, hedging awareness, and practical problem-solving activities. Students’ foreign exchange accounting skills will be assessed using their ability to interpret exchange rates, convert foreign currencies accurately, determine appropriate exchange rates for transactions, record foreign currency purchases and sales, account for imports and exports, record foreign currency receivables and payables, process foreign currency cash and bank transactions, prepare journal entries, recognize exchange gains and losses, perform revaluation, calculate exchange differences, prepare adjusting entries, post ledger accounts, reconcile foreign currency records, prepare financial statement information, identify accounting errors, correct incorrect entries, interpret foreign currency documentation, apply appropriate accounting principles, and demonstrate overall foreign exchange accounting competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Foreign Currency Transaction Exercises, and foreign exchange accounting skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Foreign Currency Transaction Exercises on students’ foreign exchange accounting skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, foreign exchange accounting skill scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Foreign Currency Transaction Exercises have a significant positive effect on students’ foreign exchange accounting skills in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to structured practical exercises are expected to demonstrate improved ability to interpret exchange rates, convert foreign currencies, record foreign currency transactions, calculate exchange differences, recognize exchange gains and losses, and prepare appropriate accounting entries. Foreign currency identification activities may improve students’ understanding of different currencies and their accounting implications. Exchange-rate interpretation exercises may strengthen students’ ability to determine the appropriate rate for a transaction. Currency-conversion activities may improve students’ numerical accuracy when translating foreign currency amounts into naira or other reporting currencies. Exercises involving transaction-date, spot, historical, closing, and average exchange rates may strengthen students’ understanding of the appropriate application of different exchange rates. Direct and indirect quotation activities may improve students’ ability to interpret exchange-rate information. Currency-appreciation and depreciation exercises may strengthen students’ understanding of changes in exchange values. Import and export transaction exercises may expose students to realistic international business transactions. Foreign currency receivable and payable exercises may improve students’ ability to recognize and subsequently account for foreign currency balances. Foreign currency cash and bank exercises may strengthen students’ ability to record international monetary transactions. Foreign currency invoice activities may improve students’ ability to interpret supporting transaction documentation. Settlement exercises may strengthen students’ understanding of the accounting implications of paying or receiving foreign currency amounts. Foreign currency loan and investment exercises may improve students’ ability to account for international financing and investment transactions. Foreign currency expense and revenue activities may strengthen students’ ability to recognize income and expenditure denominated in foreign currencies. Initial-recognition exercises may improve students’ ability to record foreign currency transactions at appropriate exchange rates. Subsequent-measurement activities may strengthen students’ ability to update foreign currency monetary items. Closing-date and settlement-date valuation exercises may improve students’ ability to determine appropriate values at reporting and settlement dates. Exchange-difference exercises may strengthen students’ ability to calculate changes arising from exchange-rate movements. Realized and unrealized exchange-gain and exchange-loss exercises may improve students’ ability to distinguish and account for different forms of exchange differences. Foreign exchange adjustment exercises may strengthen students’ ability to update accounting records. Year-end adjustment activities may improve students’ ability to recognize exchange differences at reporting dates. Revaluation exercises may strengthen students’ ability to reflect appropriate foreign currency values in financial records. Financial-statement presentation activities may improve students’ ability to communicate foreign currency information appropriately. Disclosure exercises may strengthen students’ understanding of relevant foreign exchange information in financial reports. Supporting-document preparation may improve students’ ability to maintain adequate evidence of foreign currency transactions. Invoice-analysis activities may strengthen students’ ability to extract relevant accounting information from international transaction documents. Payment-documentation exercises may improve students’ ability to record and support foreign currency settlements. Bank-advice analysis may strengthen students’ ability to interpret exchange-related information provided by financial institutions. Exchange-rate evidence activities may improve students’ ability to verify the rates applied to transactions. Transaction-verification exercises may strengthen students’ ability to confirm the accuracy of foreign currency accounting records. Reconciliation activities may improve students’ ability to compare foreign currency records with supporting documentation and bank information. Error-identification exercises may strengthen students’ ability to detect incorrect exchange rates, currency conversions, transaction amounts, and accounting entries. Error-correction exercises may improve students’ ability to correct foreign exchange accounting mistakes. Foreign exchange risk-awareness activities may strengthen students’ understanding of how exchange-rate movements affect business transactions and financial reporting. Hedging-awareness activities may improve students’ understanding of basic methods used by businesses to manage foreign exchange exposure. Practical problem-solving activities may strengthen students’ analytical ability and confidence in handling foreign exchange accounting situations. However, the effectiveness of Foreign Currency Transaction Exercises may be constrained by inadequate accounting laboratories, limited access to current and historical exchange-rate information, insufficient computers, unreliable internet connectivity, unstable electricity supply, large class sizes, limited practical training periods, inadequate lecturer supervision, outdated instructional materials, limited access to accounting software, insufficient exposure to international business documentation, inadequate practical examples, limited industry collaboration, and weak integration of foreign exchange accounting activities into Accounting Education curricula. The study therefore expects realistic, structured, hands-on, technology-supported, workplace-oriented, and adequately supervised Foreign Currency Transaction Exercises to contribute significantly to improved foreign exchange accounting skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Foreign Currency Transaction Exercises, foreign exchange accounting skills, Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, Human Capital Theory, accounting education, practical accounting education, foreign currency transactions, foreign exchange rates, currency conversion, exchange differences, exchange gains, exchange losses, foreign currency receivables, foreign currency payables, imports, exports, international accounting, foreign currency cash transactions, foreign currency bank transactions, foreign currency loans, foreign currency investments, transaction recognition, subsequent measurement, revaluation, financial reporting, foreign exchange risk, accounting documentation, transaction verification, reconciliation, error detection, error correction, accounting software, digital accounting, workplace readiness, employability skills, professional competence, Accounting Education students, Nigerian universities, and Accounting Education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, university administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, banking institutions, multinational organizations, employers, industry partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students’ practical foreign exchange accounting competencies. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Foreign Currency Transaction Exercises into Accounting Education programmes, providing realistic exchange-rate data and international transaction documents, strengthening students’ currency-conversion and exchange-difference skills, incorporating foreign exchange accounting software and spreadsheet activities, providing repeated practical exercises and structured feedback, improving exposure to international business transactions, expanding collaboration between universities and financial and business organizations, and aligning Accounting Education programmes with contemporary foreign exchange accounting requirements in Nigeria.
