Effect of Professional Accounting Examination Awareness on the Career Preparation of B.Sc./HND Accounting Education Students

Abstract

Professional accounting examination awareness is an important aspect of Accounting Education because it helps students understand the examinations, requirements, and professional pathways available for advancing in the accounting profession. Career preparation refers to the knowledge, skills, planning, and readiness students develop for entering and progressing within their chosen profession. B.Sc./HND Accounting Education students need adequate awareness of professional accounting examinations to make informed decisions about their career development and prepare appropriately for professional opportunities. However, limited awareness of professional examinations may leave students inadequately prepared for professional accounting pathways. This study therefore examines the effect of professional accounting examination awareness on the career preparation of B.Sc./HND Accounting Education students. Professional accounting examination awareness involves students’ knowledge of recognized professional accounting examinations, examination structures, entry requirements, stages, areas of specialization, study expectations, and the professional opportunities associated with successful completion. Such awareness can be developed through classroom instruction, career guidance, professional seminars, interactions with practicing accountants, and exposure to professional accounting bodies. Adequate awareness enables students to understand the relationship between their academic qualifications and professional examinations and to begin making appropriate preparations for future professional development. Career preparation refers to the extent to which students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, plans, and readiness required to pursue accounting-related career opportunities. It includes understanding career pathways, identifying relevant professional qualifications, developing appropriate competencies, setting career goals, and preparing for professional employment and advancement. Awareness of professional accounting examinations can contribute to career preparation by helping students identify relevant professional routes and understand the requirements they need to meet. Students who possess adequate examination awareness are therefore expected to demonstrate stronger preparedness for their future accounting careers. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise B.Sc./HND Accounting Education students in selected tertiary institutions. Data will be collected using a structured professional accounting examination awareness questionnaire and a career preparation assessment designed to measure students’ knowledge of professional examinations and their level of career preparedness respectively. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique at a 0.05 level of significance to determine the effect of professional accounting examination awareness on students’ career preparation. The study is expected to establish that professional accounting examination awareness has a significant positive effect on the career preparation of B.Sc./HND Accounting Education students. Students with greater awareness of professional accounting examinations are expected to demonstrate better understanding of professional career pathways, qualification requirements, examination preparation, and opportunities for professional advancement. The study may also identify areas where insufficient examination awareness limits students’ ability to adequately plan and prepare for accounting careers. The expected findings will have important implications for the teaching and learning of Accounting Education. Lecturers and career guidance personnel may need to provide students with more information about professional accounting examinations and their relevance to accounting careers. Career seminars, professional orientation programmes, examination awareness sessions, and interactions with accounting practitioners can help students understand available professional pathways. Integrating professional examination information into Accounting Education may also encourage students to begin career preparation earlier. The study will be beneficial to B.Sc./HND Accounting Education students, lecturers, career counsellors, tertiary institutions, professional accounting bodies, curriculum developers, and employers of accounting graduates. Students may gain better knowledge of professional examination pathways and improve their career preparation, while lecturers and counsellors may obtain useful information for strengthening career guidance. Tertiary institutions and curriculum developers may use the findings to incorporate relevant professional development information into Accounting Education programmes. Professional accounting bodies may also benefit from increased awareness of their examinations among prospective accounting professionals. The study recommends that tertiary institutions should strengthen professional accounting examination awareness among B.Sc./HND Accounting Education students through career seminars, professional orientation programmes, classroom discussions, guest lectures, and interactions with professional accountants. Professional accounting bodies should provide students with accessible information about examination requirements, qualification pathways, and professional opportunities. Lecturers and career counsellors should also encourage students to begin preparing for relevant professional examinations during their academic programmes. The study concludes that adequate awareness of professional accounting examinations can significantly contribute to improving the career preparation of B.Sc./HND Accounting Education students.
