Effect of Research Proposal Writing Training on Research Competence among Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Research competence is an important academic and professional skill for Accounting Education students because the ability to identify research problems, formulate research objectives and questions, review relevant literature, develop appropriate methodology, collect and analyse data, and communicate research findings is essential for successful completion of academic research projects and evidence-based accounting practice. However, some Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities may experience difficulties in developing research proposals because of inadequate practical exposure to proposal-writing procedures, limited understanding of research methodology, challenges in literature searching, weak academic writing skills, and difficulties in applying appropriate research techniques. Research Proposal Writing Training provides structured opportunities for students to develop practical knowledge and skills required for preparing effective research proposals. Such training may strengthen students' ability to plan, organize, justify, and communicate research studies systematically. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Research Proposal Writing Training on research competence among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop research skills through practical experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge and skills enhances students' academic performance, productivity, employability, and professional preparedness. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Research Proposal Writing Training may influence research competence among Accounting Education students. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select universities, faculties or schools, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, research competence assessment scales, proposal-writing performance tasks, proposal assessment rubrics, research-skills observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Research Proposal Writing Training will be assessed using indicators such as research-topic selection, identification of researchable problems, problem-statement development, research-background development, justification of the study, significance of the study, scope definition, operational definition of terms, formulation of research objectives, formulation of research questions, formulation of research hypotheses, identification of study variables, conceptual framework development, theoretical framework development, literature-search strategies, database-search skills, academic-source identification, scholarly article evaluation, literature-selection skills, literature organization, literature synthesis, identification of research gaps, citation skills, referencing skills, plagiarism awareness, paraphrasing skills, academic writing, research terminology, research-design selection, population identification, sample-size determination, sampling-technique selection, instrument selection, questionnaire development, validity procedures, reliability procedures, data-collection planning, ethical considerations, data-analysis planning, statistical-technique selection, research-methodology writing, proposal structure, chapter organization, logical sequencing, academic argumentation, coherence, clarity, research feasibility, research-resource planning, research timeline development, research-budget preparation, proposal formatting, editing, proofreading, oral proposal presentation, response to research questions, defence preparation, use of feedback, revision skills, independent research planning, research problem-solving, research decision-making, research self-efficacy, research confidence, research communication, research information-search skills, use of digital research tools, reference-management tools, spreadsheet applications, statistical software awareness, research collaboration, research documentation, and overall proposal-writing competence. Students' research competence will be assessed using indicators such as ability to select appropriate research topics, identify research problems, develop problem statements, prepare research backgrounds, justify research studies, explain the significance of studies, define the scope of research, define key terms, formulate objectives, formulate research questions, formulate hypotheses, identify variables, develop conceptual frameworks, develop theoretical frameworks, search academic databases, identify scholarly sources, evaluate research articles, select relevant literature, organize literature, synthesize previous studies, identify research gaps, cite academic sources, prepare references, avoid plagiarism, paraphrase appropriately, write academically, apply research terminology, select appropriate research designs, identify target populations, determine samples, select sampling techniques, develop research instruments, establish validity, establish reliability, plan data collection, address ethical considerations, plan data analysis, select appropriate statistical techniques, write research methodology, structure research proposals, organize chapters, develop logical arguments, maintain coherence, write clearly, assess research feasibility, plan research resources, prepare research timelines, prepare research budgets, format proposals, edit and proofread research documents, present proposals orally, respond appropriately to research questions, defend research decisions, incorporate feedback, revise proposals, plan independent research activities, solve research problems, make methodological decisions, demonstrate research self-efficacy, demonstrate research confidence, communicate research ideas effectively, search for research information, use digital research tools, manage references electronically, use spreadsheets, demonstrate awareness of statistical software, collaborate during research activities, maintain research documentation, and demonstrate overall research competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, previous research experience, exposure to Research Proposal Writing Training, and research competence levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Research Proposal Writing Training on students' research competence. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, research competence scores before and after the training may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional research-methodology instruction to determine changes associated with the training. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Research Proposal Writing Training has a significant positive effect on research competence among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities.
