Effect of Sustainability Accounting Education on Environmental Accounting Knowledge among Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Sustainability accounting education has become increasingly important as organizations are expected to recognize, measure, report, and communicate the environmental and social effects of their activities. Environmental accounting provides accounting students with knowledge of how environmental costs, resource consumption, waste generation, emissions, environmental liabilities, and sustainability-related information can be identified and incorporated into accounting and reporting practices. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities may have limited exposure to sustainability accounting concepts and practical environmental accounting applications, which may affect their preparedness for contemporary accounting responsibilities. Sustainability Accounting Education provides an opportunity to introduce students to environmental costs, environmental performance indicators, sustainability reporting, resource-use accounting, environmental management accounting, and environmentally related financial information. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Sustainability Accounting Education on environmental accounting knowledge among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop knowledge and competencies through practical experiences, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, interaction, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant education and knowledge develops students' productive capabilities and prepares them for professional responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Sustainability Accounting Education may influence environmental accounting knowledge among Accounting Education students. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, environmental accounting knowledge tests, sustainability accounting learning materials, case studies, practical exercises, scenario-based assessments, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test instruments. Sustainability Accounting Education will be assessed using indicators such as sustainability accounting concepts, environmental accounting concepts, environmental cost identification, environmental cost classification, environmental expenditure recognition, environmental liability recognition, environmental asset recognition, environmental revenue recognition, environmental risk identification, environmental performance measurement, environmental performance indicators, resource consumption accounting, energy accounting, water accounting, waste accounting, emissions accounting, carbon accounting, pollution-cost accounting, environmental management accounting, material flow cost accounting, life-cycle costing, environmental budgeting, environmental investment appraisal, environmental cost-benefit analysis, environmental variance analysis, environmental responsibility centres, environmental audit concepts, environmental disclosure, sustainability reporting, environmental reporting, integrated reporting, environmental financial information, environmental non-financial information, environmental accounting standards, sustainability standards, environmental regulations, corporate environmental responsibility, environmental governance, environmental accountability, environmental transparency, environmental compliance, environmental assurance, environmental performance reporting, stakeholder information needs, sustainability decision-making, environmental risk reporting, climate-related financial information, climate-risk disclosure, greenhouse-gas reporting, carbon-emission disclosure, resource-efficiency reporting, circular-economy accounting, sustainable procurement accounting, sustainable supply-chain information, renewable-energy accounting, environmental taxation, environmental incentives, environmental subsidies, environmental provisions, environmental contingencies, environmental impairment, environmental depreciation, environmental restoration costs, environmental remediation costs, environmental compensation, environmental fines, environmental penalties, environmental protection expenditure, environmental research and development expenditure, environmental training expenditure, environmental monitoring costs, environmental waste-treatment costs, pollution-prevention costs, recycling costs, environmental product costs, green-product accounting, green investment, green finance, sustainability-related financial instruments, environmental performance evaluation, environmental management decisions, environmental information systems, accounting information systems for sustainability, sustainability data collection, environmental data verification, environmental data analysis, sustainability dashboards, environmental accounting software, spreadsheet-based environmental accounting, digital sustainability records, environmental documentation, environmental record keeping, environmental evidence, environmental accounting reports, sustainability disclosures, environmental reporting formats, sustainability education sessions, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, case studies, group activities, individual assignments, field-based examples, simulation activities, repeated practice, lecturer feedback, peer learning, reflective activities, and scenario-based learning. Students' environmental accounting knowledge will be assessed using indicators such as understanding of environmental accounting terminology, identification of environmental costs, classification of environmental expenditures, recognition of environmental liabilities, recognition of environmental assets, recognition of environmental revenues, identification of environmental risks, interpretation of environmental performance indicators, understanding of resource consumption accounting, energy accounting, water accounting, waste accounting, emissions accounting, carbon accounting, pollution-cost accounting, environmental management accounting, material flow cost accounting, life-cycle costing, environmental budgeting, environmental investment appraisal, environmental cost-benefit analysis, environmental variance analysis, environmental responsibility centres, environmental auditing, environmental disclosure, sustainability reporting, environmental reporting, integrated reporting, interpretation of environmental financial information, interpretation of environmental non-financial information, understanding of sustainability standards, environmental regulations, corporate environmental responsibility, environmental governance, environmental accountability, environmental transparency, environmental compliance, environmental assurance, stakeholder information needs, sustainability decision-making, environmental risk reporting, climate-related financial information, climate-risk disclosure, greenhouse-gas reporting, carbon-emission disclosure, resource-efficiency reporting, circular-economy accounting, sustainable procurement accounting, sustainable supply-chain information, renewable-energy accounting, environmental taxation, environmental incentives, environmental subsidies, environmental provisions, environmental contingencies, environmental impairment, environmental depreciation, environmental restoration costs, environmental remediation costs, environmental compensation, environmental fines, environmental penalties, environmental protection expenditure, environmental research and development expenditure, environmental training expenditure, environmental monitoring costs, waste-treatment costs, pollution-prevention costs, recycling costs, environmental product costs, green-product accounting, green investment, green finance, sustainability-related financial instruments, environmental performance evaluation, environmental management decisions, sustainability information systems, sustainability data collection, environmental data verification, environmental data analysis, environmental accounting software, spreadsheet-based environmental accounting, digital sustainability records, environmental documentation, environmental evidence, environmental accounting reports, sustainability disclosures, and application of environmental accounting knowledge to realistic business scenarios. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Sustainability Accounting Education, and levels of environmental accounting knowledge. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Sustainability Accounting Education on environmental accounting knowledge. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, environmental accounting knowledge scores before and after exposure to Sustainability Accounting Education may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional accounting instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Sustainability Accounting Education has a significant positive effect on environmental accounting knowledge among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities.
