Effect of Working Capital Analysis Exercises on Students’ Liquidity Management Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Working capital analysis is an important component of accounting and financial management education because it equips students with the knowledge and practical skills required to evaluate an organization's short-term financial position and manage its current assets and current liabilities effectively. Accounting education students need to understand how cash, receivables, inventory, payables, and other short-term financial resources and obligations influence an organization's ability to meet its immediate financial commitments. However, students may experience difficulties developing liquidity management skills when working capital is taught mainly through theoretical explanations and routine calculations without sufficient opportunities to analyse realistic financial information. Working Capital Analysis Exercises provide students with practical opportunities to analyse current assets and current liabilities, calculate working capital and liquidity ratios, evaluate cash conversion cycles, assess receivables and inventory management, examine short-term obligations, identify liquidity problems, and recommend appropriate working capital strategies. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of working capital analysis exercises on students' liquidity management skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Working Capital Management Theory. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, reflective observation, conceptualization, and active experimentation, providing a suitable framework for students' participation in practical working capital analysis exercises. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, prior knowledge, problem-solving, and the construction of knowledge through meaningful learning experiences. Working Capital Management Theory emphasizes the effective management of current assets and current liabilities to maintain adequate liquidity while supporting efficient business operations and profitability. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how working capital analysis exercises may influence students' liquidity management skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible accounting education students. Working capital analysis exercises will be assessed using indicators such as analysis of current assets, analysis of current liabilities, working capital calculation, current ratio analysis, quick ratio analysis, cash ratio analysis, receivables analysis, inventory analysis, payables analysis, cash conversion cycle analysis, operating cycle analysis, working capital turnover, inventory turnover, receivables turnover, payable days, inventory holding period, receivables collection period, cash conversion period, liquidity trend analysis, comparative working capital analysis, identification of liquidity gaps, short-term financing analysis, working capital policy evaluation, cash management analysis, realistic financial statement cases, working capital simulations, spreadsheet-based analysis, group problem-solving, individual exercises, lecturer demonstrations, guided practice, feedback, and opportunities for repeated application. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized liquidity management skills tests, practical working capital analysis tasks, financial statement case studies, liquidity scenarios, working capital simulations, spreadsheet-based exercises, competency-based assessment rubrics, observation checklists, students' practical work, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to working capital analysis exercises, practical financial management experiences, and levels of liquidity management skills. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of working capital analysis exercises on students' liquidity management skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, liquidity management skill scores before and after exposure to working capital analysis exercises may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving conventional financial management instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that working capital analysis exercises have a significant positive effect on students' liquidity management skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and practical working capital analysis exercises are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to calculate and interpret liquidity measures, evaluate current assets and liabilities, identify liquidity problems, assess cash conversion cycles, and recommend appropriate short-term financial management strategies than students taught primarily through conventional theoretical approaches. Practical analysis of current assets and current liabilities may help students understand how working capital components interact to influence an organization's liquidity position. Exercises involving receivables collection may strengthen students' ability to assess the timing of cash inflows and identify inefficient credit and collection practices. Inventory analysis may improve students' understanding of the relationship between inventory levels, stockholding periods, liquidity, and operating efficiency, while payables analysis may help students evaluate the timing of short-term obligations and supplier payments. Cash conversion cycle exercises may further strengthen students' ability to identify periods when funds are tied up in business operations and assess strategies for improving liquidity. Comparative and trend analysis may help students evaluate changes in liquidity over time and identify emerging financial problems. Spreadsheet-based working capital exercises may improve students' ability to organize financial data, calculate liquidity measures, analyse financial trends, and evaluate alternative working capital strategies efficiently. However, inadequate access to realistic financial data, limited computer and spreadsheet facilities, large class sizes, insufficient instructional time, inadequate lecturer training, and students' difficulty integrating multiple working capital components may reduce the effectiveness of the exercises. The study therefore expects practical, realistic, technology-supported, and well-supervised working capital analysis exercises to contribute significantly to improved liquidity management skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on working capital analysis exercises, liquidity management skills, accounting education, financial management education, working capital management, cash management, receivables management, inventory management, experiential learning, constructivist learning, practical accounting skills, financial decision-making, accounting pedagogy, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, curriculum developers, financial institutions, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening practical financial management education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating working capital analysis exercises into accounting education programmes, developing realistic liquidity management cases and simulations, strengthening students' understanding of current assets and current liabilities, incorporating cash conversion cycle analysis into instruction, using spreadsheet and computerized financial analysis tools, providing continuous guided practice and feedback, training accounting educators in practical working capital management techniques, developing competency-based liquidity management assessments, and aligning accounting education with the practical short-term financial management competencies required in contemporary accounting and business environments in Nigeria.
