Impact of Accounting Data Analytics Education on Students’ Financial Data Interpretation Skills in Nigerian Polytechnics

 

Abstract

Accounting data analytics has become increasingly important in modern accounting practice as organizations generate large volumes of financial and business data through accounting software, enterprise systems, electronic transactions, digital payment platforms, and computerized financial reporting systems. Accounting professionals are increasingly expected to collect, organize, examine, visualize, and interpret financial data to support accurate reporting, identify unusual transactions, evaluate financial performance, and facilitate informed decision-making. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics may have limited exposure to practical accounting data analytics education, which may create a gap between conventional accounting knowledge and the analytical skills required in contemporary accounting workplaces. Accounting Data Analytics Education provides students with opportunities to work with financial datasets and apply analytical techniques to identify patterns, trends, relationships, inconsistencies, and meaningful financial information. Such education may strengthen students’ ability to interpret financial data accurately and apply analytical findings to accounting tasks. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Accounting Data Analytics Education on students’ financial data interpretation skills in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical analytical competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge and analytical skills enhances students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional accounting responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Accounting Data Analytics Education may influence students’ financial data interpretation skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, financial data interpretation skills assessment scales, practical accounting-data tasks, financial datasets, spreadsheet exercises, data visualization tasks, analytical case studies, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, financial data interpretation skill scores before and after participation in the educational intervention may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional accounting instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Accounting Data Analytics Education has a significant positive impact on students’ financial data interpretation skills in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to structured and practical accounting data analytics education are expected to demonstrate improved ability to organize, analyse, interpret, evaluate, and communicate financial information. Financial dataset identification activities may improve students’ ability to recognize relevant accounting information. Data-collection activities may strengthen students’ understanding of obtaining reliable financial data. Data-entry exercises may improve accuracy in recording financial information. Data-cleaning activities may strengthen students’ ability to identify and correct incomplete or inconsistent records. Data-organization and classification exercises may improve students’ ability to arrange financial information systematically. Data-validation activities may strengthen students’ ability to confirm the reliability of accounting data. Sorting and filtering exercises may improve students’ ability to isolate relevant financial information. Data-aggregation and summarization activities may strengthen students’ ability to convert large datasets into meaningful financial summaries. Spreadsheet exercises may improve students’ ability to use digital tools for financial analysis.
