Impact of Accounting Education on Students’ Ability to Provide Basic Accounting Support to Small Business Owners in Nigeria

Abstract

Accounting education plays an important role in developing students’ knowledge and practical skills needed to perform accounting-related tasks in different business environments. Providing basic accounting support to small business owners involves assisting with financial record-keeping, transaction recording, preparation of simple financial summaries, cash monitoring, budgeting, and organization of accounting documents. However, limited practical accounting knowledge may affect students’ ability to provide useful and accurate support to small business owners. This study therefore examines the impact of accounting education on students’ ability to provide basic accounting support to small business owners in Nigeria, with the aim of determining whether accounting education enhances students’ practical capacity to assist small businesses with basic accounting activities. Accounting education exposes students to fundamental accounting principles, procedures, and practical activities relevant to small business operations. Through classroom instruction, practical exercises, case studies, assignments, and accounting simulations, students learn how to record business transactions, maintain cash records, organize source documents, prepare basic financial statements, monitor income and expenditure, and apply simple accounting procedures. Such educational experiences are expected to equip students with practical knowledge that can be applied when providing basic accounting support to small business owners. Students’ ability to provide basic accounting support to small business owners refers to their capacity to apply accounting knowledge to assist with routine financial activities. This may include recording transactions, organizing financial documents, maintaining simple accounting records, preparing basic financial summaries, monitoring cash receipts and payments, and providing relevant financial information. Accounting education may improve this ability by giving students opportunities to apply accounting principles to realistic small business situations and develop practical skills that extend beyond theoretical classroom knowledge. The study will adopt a quantitative research approach using a descriptive survey design. The population will comprise accounting education students in selected Nigerian universities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess students’ exposure to accounting education and their ability to provide basic accounting support to small business owners. The data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of accounting education on students’ ability to provide such support. The study is expected to establish that accounting education has a positive impact on students’ ability to provide basic accounting support to small business owners. Students with adequate accounting education and practical exposure are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities in recording transactions, organizing financial documents, maintaining basic accounting records, preparing financial summaries, and monitoring routine business finances. The study may also identify areas where students have limited practical competence and require additional exposure to small business accounting activities. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in accounting education. Accounting educators may need to provide greater opportunities for students to apply accounting knowledge to realistic small business situations. Small business accounting projects, practical record-keeping exercises, financial documentation activities, case studies, and accounting simulations may help students develop the practical competence required to provide basic accounting support. Such activities may also strengthen students’ confidence in applying accounting knowledge outside the classroom. The study is expected to benefit accounting education students, lecturers, universities, small business owners, curriculum planners, and prospective employers. Students may develop practical accounting skills that can be used to support small businesses and improve their readiness for employment or self-employment. Lecturers may use the findings to improve practical teaching approaches, while universities and curriculum planners may strengthen small business accounting content within accounting education programmes. Small business owners may also benefit from access to individuals with appropriate basic accounting knowledge and skills. The study recommends that accounting education programmes should strengthen practical instruction on providing accounting support to small businesses. Lecturers should incorporate small business accounting projects, transaction-recording exercises, financial documentation tasks, cash-record preparation, basic financial reporting activities, and practical case studies into relevant courses. Universities should also encourage students to apply accounting knowledge to realistic business situations. It is concluded that effective accounting education can enhance students’ ability to provide basic accounting support to small business owners and improve their preparedness for practical accounting responsibilities.
