Abstract
Professional judgment is an essential competency in accounting because accounting practitioners are frequently required to evaluate financial information, interpret accounting circumstances, assess uncertainty, select appropriate accounting treatments, and make reasoned decisions when precise information is unavailable. Accounting estimates are particularly important because they require the application of knowledge, experience, assumptions, evidence, and professional reasoning in determining appropriate amounts for financial reporting. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities may have limited opportunities to engage in practical accounting-estimate activities that reflect the uncertainty and decision-making requirements encountered in professional accounting practice. Accounting Estimate Exercises provide students with opportunities to analyse realistic accounting situations involving estimation, evaluate available information, develop reasonable assumptions, select appropriate estimation approaches, and justify their conclusions. Such exercises may strengthen students’ ability to apply accounting knowledge, evaluate alternatives, recognize uncertainty, and exercise sound professional judgment. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Accounting Estimate Exercises on professional judgment skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Cognitive Learning Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop professional competencies through practical experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Cognitive Learning Theory emphasizes the processes through which students acquire, organize, interpret, evaluate, and apply knowledge when solving accounting problems. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant accounting knowledge and practical skills enhances students’ competence, productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Accounting Estimate Exercises may influence students’ professional judgment skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, professional judgment skills assessment scales, accounting-estimate case scenarios, practical accounting-estimate tasks, decision-making rubrics, observation checklists, written justification exercises, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Accounting Estimate Exercises have a significant positive impact on students’ professional judgment skills in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to structured and realistic accounting-estimate exercises are expected to demonstrate improved ability to evaluate uncertain accounting information, develop reasonable assumptions, assess evidence, compare alternatives, select appropriate accounting treatments, and justify professional decisions. Accounting-estimate identification activities may improve students’ understanding of situations requiring professional judgment. Doubtful-debt and expected-credit-loss exercises may strengthen students’ ability to evaluate credit-risk information and make reasonable loss estimates. Inventory-obsolescence activities may improve students’ ability to assess the condition and recoverability of inventory. Depreciation-estimation exercises may strengthen students’ ability to evaluate useful lives, residual values, and depreciation methods. Impairment-estimation activities may improve students’ ability to assess whether assets require impairment adjustments.
