Impact of Accounting Fraud-Scenario Exercises on Students’ Fraud Risk Recognition Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Accounting fraud remains a significant concern in organizations because fraudulent financial activities can result in financial losses, inaccurate financial reporting, weakened internal controls, reputational damage, and reduced stakeholder confidence. Accounting professionals therefore require the ability to recognize unusual transactions, suspicious documentation, control weaknesses, and other indicators that may signal fraud risk. However, Accounting Education students in Nigeria may have limited opportunities to examine realistic fraud situations during classroom instruction, which may affect their ability to identify and respond appropriately to potential fraud risks. Accounting Fraud-Scenario Exercises provide students with opportunities to analyse simulated cases involving suspicious transactions, manipulated documents, unauthorized activities, weak internal controls, and other situations associated with fraud risk. Such practical exercises may strengthen students’ analytical judgment, professional skepticism, critical thinking, and ability to recognize potential fraud indicators. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Accounting Fraud-Scenario Exercises on fraud risk recognition skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Fraud Triangle Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical competencies through concrete experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Fraud Triangle Theory explains fraudulent behaviour through the interaction of pressure, opportunity, and rationalization, thereby providing a framework for understanding circumstances that may increase fraud risk. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Accounting Fraud-Scenario Exercises may influence students’ fraud risk recognition skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities and polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select institutions, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, fraud risk recognition assessment scales, simulated accounting fraud scenarios, case-analysis tasks, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Accounting Fraud-Scenario Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as identification of suspicious transactions, examination of unusual journal entries, recognition of altered invoices, detection of duplicate invoices, identification of fictitious suppliers, recognition of unauthorized payments, detection of unusual cash withdrawals, identification of unexplained adjustments, recognition of suspicious expense claims, examination of payroll anomalies, identification of ghost employees, recognition of irregular procurement activities, detection of unsupported expenditures, identification of missing documentation, recognition of falsified receipts, examination of manipulated accounting records, recognition of unusual revenue transactions, detection of premature revenue recognition, identification of concealed liabilities, recognition of unusual related-party transactions, detection of inappropriate asset valuations, identification of inventory irregularities, recognition of unexplained inventory losses, detection of unusual write-offs, identification of unauthorized access to accounting records, recognition of weak password controls, identification of inadequate segregation of duties, recognition of excessive management override, detection of weak approval procedures, identification of inadequate supervisory review, recognition of ineffective reconciliation procedures, detection of unusual bank-reconciliation differences, identification of unexplained cash shortages, recognition of unexplained cash surpluses, detection of inconsistent supporting documents, identification of altered signatures, recognition of forged authorization, identification of suspicious electronic transactions, recognition of unusual online payments, detection of duplicate electronic transfers, identification of unauthorized bank transfers, recognition of suspicious point-of-sale transactions, detection of unusual digital accounting entries, identification of unexplained system adjustments, recognition of suspicious user activities, examination of audit trails, identification of missing audit trails, recognition of unusual transaction timing, detection of transactions recorded outside normal periods, identification of unusual transaction amounts, recognition of round-dollar transactions, detection of repeated transactions, identification of unusual account balances, recognition of unexpected account movements, identification of pressure indicators, recognition of opportunity indicators, identification of rationalization indicators, recognition of behavioural warning signs, examination of management incentives, identification of financial difficulties, recognition of performance pressure, examination of access opportunities, identification of control weaknesses, recognition of collusion risks, identification of override risks, recognition of documentation weaknesses, recognition of professional skepticism, examination of evidence, verification of transaction authenticity, verification of supporting documents, confirmation of transaction details, comparison of accounting records, investigation of discrepancies, evaluation of internal controls, assessment of fraud exposure, identification of potential fraud schemes, classification of fraud risks, assessment of likelihood of fraud, assessment of potential impact, documentation of observations, preparation of preliminary fraud-risk reports, escalation of suspicious activities, communication of concerns, recommendation of control improvements, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group exercises, case studies, role-play activities, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging fraud scenarios. Students’ fraud risk recognition skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to recognize suspicious transactions, identify unusual journal entries, detect altered invoices, identify duplicate invoices, recognize fictitious suppliers, detect unauthorized payments, identify unusual cash withdrawals, recognize unexplained accounting adjustments, detect suspicious expense claims, identify payroll anomalies, recognize ghost employees, detect irregular procurement activities, identify unsupported expenditures, recognize missing documentation, detect falsified receipts, identify manipulated accounting records, recognize unusual revenue transactions, detect premature revenue recognition, identify concealed liabilities, recognize unusual related-party transactions, detect inappropriate asset valuations, identify inventory irregularities, recognize unexplained inventory losses, detect unusual write-offs, identify unauthorized access, recognize weak password controls, detect inadequate segregation of duties, recognize management override risks, identify weak approval procedures, recognize inadequate supervisory review, detect ineffective reconciliation, identify unusual bank-reconciliation differences, recognize unexplained cash shortages, detect unexplained cash surpluses, identify inconsistent supporting documents, recognize altered signatures, detect forged authorization, identify suspicious electronic transactions, recognize unusual online payments, detect duplicate electronic transfers, identify unauthorized bank transfers, recognize suspicious point-of-sale transactions, detect unusual digital accounting entries, identify unexplained system adjustments, recognize suspicious user activities, examine audit trails, identify missing audit trails, recognize unusual transaction timing, detect transactions recorded outside normal accounting periods, identify unusual transaction amounts, recognize round-dollar transactions, detect repeated transactions, identify unusual account balances, recognize unexpected account movements, identify pressure indicators, recognize opportunity indicators, identify rationalization indicators, recognize behavioural warning signs, examine management incentives, identify financial difficulties, recognize performance pressure, examine access opportunities, identify control weaknesses, recognize collusion risks, identify override risks, recognize documentation weaknesses, demonstrate professional skepticism, examine available evidence, verify transaction authenticity, verify supporting documents, confirm transaction details, compare accounting records, investigate discrepancies, evaluate internal controls, assess fraud exposure, identify potential fraud schemes, classify fraud risks, assess fraud likelihood, assess potential impact, document observations, prepare preliminary fraud-risk reports, escalate suspicious activities appropriately, communicate concerns professionally, recommend control improvements, demonstrate analytical ability, demonstrate critical thinking, demonstrate attention to detail, demonstrate professional judgment, demonstrate problem-solving ability, demonstrate decision-making ability, demonstrate accounting competence, demonstrate confidence, demonstrate ethical awareness, demonstrate professional skepticism, demonstrate digital competence, demonstrate accountability, demonstrate responsibility, demonstrate adaptability, and overall fraud risk recognition competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Accounting Fraud-Scenario Exercises, practical experiences, and fraud risk recognition skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Accounting Fraud-Scenario Exercises on students’ fraud risk recognition skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, fraud risk recognition scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Accounting Fraud-Scenario Exercises have a significant positive impact on students’ fraud risk recognition skills in Nigeria. Students exposed to realistic and structured fraud scenarios are expected to demonstrate greater ability to identify suspicious accounting activities, recognize control weaknesses, evaluate evidence, and respond appropriately to potential fraud risks. Suspicious-transaction exercises may improve students’ ability to recognize unusual financial activities. Journal-entry analysis may strengthen students’ ability to identify questionable accounting adjustments. Invoice-analysis activities may improve students’ ability to detect altered, duplicated, or fictitious invoices. Supplier-verification exercises may strengthen students’ ability to recognize fictitious or suspicious suppliers. Payment-analysis activities may improve students’ ability to identify unauthorized payments. Cash-transaction scenarios may strengthen students’ ability to recognize unusual withdrawals, shortages, and unexplained balances. Expense-claim scenarios may improve students’ ability to identify unsupported or suspicious expenditures. Payroll scenarios may strengthen students’ ability to recognize ghost employees and unusual payroll patterns. Procurement scenarios may improve students’ ability to identify irregular purchasing activities and weaknesses in procurement controls. Documentation-analysis activities may strengthen students’ ability to recognize missing, inconsistent, altered, or falsified records. Revenue-recognition scenarios may improve students’ ability to identify unusual or prematurely recognized revenue. Liability-analysis activities may strengthen students’ ability to recognize concealed or improperly recorded liabilities. Related-party transaction scenarios may improve students’ ability to identify potentially inappropriate transactions. Asset-valuation scenarios may strengthen students’ ability to recognize questionable valuations. Inventory scenarios may improve students’ ability to identify unexplained losses, irregular balances, and unusual write-offs. Access-control scenarios may strengthen students’ awareness of unauthorized access to accounting records. Management-override scenarios may improve students’ ability to recognize excessive authority over accounting procedures. Approval and supervisory-review scenarios may strengthen students’ understanding of weaknesses in authorization and oversight. Reconciliation scenarios may improve students’ ability to identify unexplained differences between accounting and financial records. Electronic-transaction scenarios may strengthen students’ ability to recognize suspicious digital payments, duplicate transfers, unauthorized transactions, and unusual electronic entries. Audit-trail exercises may improve students’ ability to use transaction histories and system records when examining potential fraud. Transaction-timing exercises may strengthen students’ ability to recognize unusual recording periods. Transaction-amount exercises may improve students’ ability to identify unusual or repetitive amounts. Account-balance analysis may strengthen students’ ability to identify unexpected movements requiring investigation. Fraud Triangle scenarios may improve students’ ability to recognize pressure, opportunity, and rationalization factors associated with fraud risk. Behavioural-warning scenarios may strengthen students’ awareness of circumstances that may require additional professional attention. Evidence-evaluation exercises may improve students’ ability to distinguish reliable evidence from incomplete or questionable information. Transaction-verification activities may strengthen students’ ability to confirm financial information before accepting accounting records as accurate. Escalation activities may strengthen students’ understanding of appropriate responses to suspicious activities. Communication exercises may improve students’ ability to report concerns professionally and objectively. Control-improvement activities may strengthen students’ ability to recommend measures for reducing fraud opportunities. Repeated exposure to realistic scenarios may improve students’ professional skepticism, attention to detail, analytical judgment, confidence, and independence in fraud-risk recognition. However, the effectiveness of Accounting Fraud-Scenario Exercises may be constrained by limited access to realistic fraud cases, inadequate accounting laboratories, insufficient forensic-accounting instructional resources, limited lecturer expertise in fraud examination, large class sizes, inadequate practical training periods, outdated instructional materials, limited access to accounting and audit software, inadequate digital forensic resources, insufficient feedback, low student participation, and weak integration of fraud-risk education into Accounting Education curricula. The study therefore expects realistic, structured, evidence-based, hands-on, ethically designed, and adequately supervised Accounting Fraud-Scenario Exercises to contribute significantly to improved fraud risk recognition skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Accounting Fraud-Scenario Exercises, fraud risk recognition skills, Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, Fraud Triangle Theory, accounting education, practical accounting education, fraud risk assessment, fraud detection, forensic accounting education, professional skepticism, internal controls, fraud indicators, transaction analysis, journal-entry analysis, invoice verification, supplier verification, payroll fraud recognition, procurement fraud recognition, cash fraud recognition, revenue-recognition risks, inventory fraud risks, financial-document analysis, electronic transaction risks, digital accounting fraud, audit trails, segregation of duties, management override, reconciliation controls, authorization controls, evidence evaluation, professional judgment, ethical accounting practice, workplace readiness, employability skills, professional competence, Accounting Education students, Nigerian universities, Nigerian polytechnics, and Accounting Education in Nigeria.
