Impact of Accounting Group Projects on Teamwork Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Teamwork is an essential competence in contemporary accounting practice because accounting professionals frequently work in teams to prepare financial reports, conduct audits, analyse financial information, solve accounting problems, develop budgets, and make business decisions. Accounting education students therefore require the ability to collaborate effectively, communicate with team members, share responsibilities, resolve disagreements, coordinate tasks, and contribute meaningfully to collective accounting assignments. However, conventional accounting instruction in Nigerian universities may emphasize individual learning and assessment, thereby providing limited opportunities for students to develop teamwork skills through sustained collaborative accounting activities. Accounting Group Projects provide students with opportunities to work collaboratively on accounting tasks, share responsibilities, solve accounting problems, conduct research, analyse financial information, and present collective findings. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of accounting group projects on teamwork skills among accounting education students in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Social Interdependence Theory, Experiential Learning Theory, and Constructivist Learning Theory. Social Interdependence Theory emphasizes positive interdependence, individual accountability, promotive interaction, social skills, and group processing as important conditions for effective teamwork. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation, providing a suitable framework for students' participation in collaborative accounting projects. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, peer interaction, collaboration, and the construction of knowledge through shared learning experiences. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how accounting group projects may influence students' teamwork skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible accounting education students. Accounting group projects will be assessed using indicators such as frequency of group projects, group formation, allocation of accounting tasks, role assignment, collaborative research, joint financial analysis, preparation of accounting reports, group problem-solving, financial case analysis, group presentations, peer assessment, individual accountability, group accountability, communication among team members, conflict-resolution activities, project supervision, lecturer guidance, peer feedback, project duration, and opportunities for repeated collaborative activities. Students' teamwork skills will be assessed using indicators such as collaboration, task coordination, responsibility sharing, communication, active listening, mutual support, participation, leadership, conflict resolution, negotiation, problem-solving, respect for diverse opinions, accountability, time management, adaptability, decision-making, contribution to group objectives, and ability to work effectively with individuals having different skills and perspectives. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized teamwork skills assessments, group-project performance tasks, peer-assessment forms, lecturer assessment rubrics, observation checklists, project reports, group presentations, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, group-project experiences, participation levels, and teamwork skills. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of accounting group projects on students' teamwork skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, teamwork skill scores before and after exposure to accounting group projects may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving predominantly individual accounting assignments to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that accounting group projects have a significant positive impact on teamwork skills among accounting education students in Nigerian universities. Students who regularly participate in well-structured accounting group projects are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to collaborate, communicate, coordinate tasks, share responsibilities, resolve conflicts, support team members, and contribute to collective accounting objectives than students exposed primarily to individual learning activities. Group projects may provide students with opportunities to combine different abilities while working on realistic accounting tasks and develop an understanding of how individual contributions affect collective outcomes. Collaborative activities involving financial statement analysis, accounting research, auditing cases, budgeting, taxation, financial reporting, and business problem-solving may strengthen students' communication, coordination, leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities. Peer assessment and individual accountability mechanisms may also encourage students to participate actively and develop responsibility for assigned tasks. However, unequal participation, dominance by particular group members, interpersonal conflicts, free-riding, large class sizes, inadequate supervision, limited project time, and poorly designed group activities may reduce the effectiveness of accounting group projects. The study therefore expects structured, collaborative, fairly assessed, and well-supervised accounting group projects to contribute significantly to improved teamwork skills among accounting education students in Nigerian universities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on accounting group projects, teamwork skills, accounting education, collaborative learning, social interdependence, experiential learning, constructivist learning, group learning, employability skills, professional competencies, accounting pedagogy, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, accounting firms, employers, curriculum developers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening collaborative and employability skills in accounting education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating structured accounting group projects into university accounting education programmes, developing realistic collaborative accounting cases, strengthening peer assessment and individual accountability mechanisms, training accounting educators in effective group-project supervision, improving students' conflict-resolution and collaborative communication skills, incorporating teamwork competencies into assessment frameworks, and creating stronger connections between university accounting education and the collaborative skills required in contemporary accounting workplaces.
