Impact of Accounting Students’ Participation in Departmental Leadership Activities on Their Leadership Skills
Abstract
Departmental leadership activities involve students’ participation in responsibilities and programmes that require them to coordinate activities, work with other students, make decisions, communicate information, and contribute to the administration of their academic department. Leadership skills refer to the abilities required to guide others, organize activities, communicate effectively, solve problems, make appropriate decisions, and work toward shared objectives. Participation in departmental leadership activities may provide Accounting students with practical opportunities to develop these skills beyond regular classroom learning. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Accounting students’ participation in departmental leadership activities on their leadership skills. Departmental leadership activities may include serving in student associations, organizing departmental programmes, coordinating academic activities, participating in committees, representing students, assisting with departmental events, and taking responsibility for group assignments or projects. Through these activities, students may encounter situations requiring planning, delegation, teamwork, communication, conflict management, and decision-making. Regular involvement can provide practical experiences through which students apply leadership principles to real student and academic situations. Leadership skills encompass communication, decision-making, problem-solving, teamwork, organization, delegation, responsibility, adaptability, and the ability to motivate or coordinate others toward common objectives. Students who actively participate in departmental leadership activities may have more opportunities to practise these skills in practical settings. Such experiences can complement academic learning by allowing students to take responsibility for activities, interact with different individuals, manage tasks, and respond to challenges that require effective leadership. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise Accounting students in selected tertiary institutions. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a leadership-skills assessment designed to measure students’ participation in departmental leadership activities and their leadership skills, including communication, decision-making, teamwork, problem-solving, organization, and responsibility. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that participation in departmental leadership activities has a significant positive impact on the leadership skills of Accounting students. Students who participate actively in departmental leadership responsibilities are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities in communication, teamwork, decision-making, organization, problem-solving, and coordination of activities. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in Accounting Education. Accounting departments may need to create more opportunities for students to participate in structured leadership responsibilities alongside their academic activities. Lecturers can also encourage students to take active roles in group projects, departmental committees, academic associations, and other activities that require students to practise leadership skills in practical situations. The study will be beneficial to Accounting students, lecturers, heads of departments, tertiary institutions, student associations, and employers. Students may develop leadership competencies that can support their academic and professional development, while lecturers and departmental administrators may gain useful information for creating activities that promote students’ leadership development. Employers may also benefit from graduates who possess accounting knowledge alongside practical leadership abilities. The study recommends that tertiary institutions and Accounting departments should provide students with meaningful opportunities to participate in departmental leadership activities. Students should be encouraged to take responsibility for academic programmes, student associations, committees, projects, and departmental events. Departments should also provide appropriate guidance to students undertaking leadership responsibilities. The study concludes that active participation in departmental leadership activities can provide Accounting students with practical experiences that strengthen their leadership skills and prepare them for responsibilities in professional organizations.
