Impact of Accounting Students’ Participation in Entrepreneurship Clubs on Their Business Opportunity Recognition Skills in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Entrepreneurship education has become increasingly important in higher education because of its potential to equip students with the skills required to identify and pursue business opportunities. Participation in entrepreneurship clubs provides accounting students with opportunities to engage in business discussions, entrepreneurial activities, networking, idea development, and practical problem-solving beyond the conventional classroom environment. Business opportunity recognition skills refer to students’ ability to identify unmet market needs, evaluate emerging business possibilities, recognize viable ideas, and determine potential opportunities for creating value. This study examines the impact of accounting students’ participation in entrepreneurship clubs on their business opportunity recognition skills in Nigerian universities. Entrepreneurship clubs provide students with informal learning environments where they can interact with fellow students, entrepreneurs, business professionals, and other individuals with entrepreneurial interests. Through club meetings, business competitions, workshops, seminars, networking activities, business idea presentations, and entrepreneurial projects, students may gain exposure to practical business situations. Such participation can enable accounting students to apply their knowledge of finance, costs, budgeting, and business performance to entrepreneurial situations. Regular involvement in these activities may also expose students to different markets, customer needs, business models, and emerging commercial trends. Business opportunity recognition skills are important competencies for accounting students because accounting graduates may operate not only as employees but also as entrepreneurs, business advisers, financial consultants, and managers. Students with strong opportunity recognition skills are better positioned to identify gaps in existing markets, evaluate the feasibility of business ideas, recognize potential sources of value creation, and respond appropriately to changing business conditions. However, classroom-based accounting education may not always provide sufficient opportunities for students to develop these practical entrepreneurial competencies. Participation in entrepreneurship clubs may therefore provide additional experiences that support the development of students’ ability to recognize and evaluate business opportunities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design, specifically a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise accounting education students in selected Nigerian universities who are members of entrepreneurship clubs. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique based on the size and distribution of the study population. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ level of participation in entrepreneurship clubs and their business opportunity recognition skills. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique to determine the impact of entrepreneurship club participation on business opportunity recognition skills. The study is expected to establish that participation in entrepreneurship clubs has a positive impact on accounting students’ business opportunity recognition skills. Students who actively participate in club activities are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to identify business gaps, recognize potential market opportunities, assess entrepreneurial possibilities, and generate viable business ideas. Greater exposure to practical entrepreneurial activities may provide students with experiences that complement formal accounting instruction and strengthen their ability to apply accounting knowledge to real-world business situations. The findings will have implications for accounting education and entrepreneurship learning in Nigerian universities. Integrating entrepreneurship clubs with accounting education can provide students with practical opportunities to develop competencies that may not be fully acquired through conventional classroom instruction. Accounting lecturers and entrepreneurship coordinators can encourage students to participate actively in business idea competitions, entrepreneurial workshops, networking events, and practical business projects. Universities can also strengthen entrepreneurship clubs by providing access to experienced entrepreneurs, business mentors, industry professionals, and relevant entrepreneurial resources. The study will be significant to accounting students, accounting educators, university administrators, entrepreneurship development units, and policymakers concerned with graduate employability and entrepreneurial development. Accounting students may benefit from improved exposure to practical business opportunities and entrepreneurial thinking. Accounting educators may gain insight into the value of extracurricular entrepreneurial activities in complementing accounting instruction. University administrators may use the findings to strengthen entrepreneurship clubs and student enterprise programmes, while policymakers and entrepreneurship development stakeholders may find the findings useful in promoting entrepreneurial competencies among university students. The study recommends that Nigerian universities should encourage active participation of accounting students in well-structured entrepreneurship clubs and strengthen such clubs through regular workshops, business competitions, networking programmes, and practical entrepreneurial projects. Accounting education programmes should also create stronger connections between classroom learning and entrepreneurial activities to enable students to apply accounting knowledge in identifying and evaluating business opportunities. The study concludes that meaningful participation in entrepreneurship clubs can contribute to the development of business opportunity recognition skills among accounting students and can support the broader goal of producing graduates who are capable of identifying and pursuing viable entrepreneurial opportunities.
