Impact of Bad Debt Provision Exercises on Students’ Receivables Valuation Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Accurate valuation of receivables is an important accounting competency because businesses need to determine the amount of outstanding customer balances that is reasonably expected to be collected and recognize potential credit losses appropriately. Bad debt provision is an important aspect of receivables accounting because it enables accounting personnel to recognize anticipated losses arising from customers’ inability or unwillingness to settle their debts. Accounting Education students are expected to understand the identification of doubtful debts, estimation of bad debt provisions, adjustment of receivables balances, and appropriate presentation of net realizable receivables in financial statements. However, students in Nigerian polytechnics may experience difficulties applying these procedures because classroom instruction may provide insufficient opportunities for practical exercises involving realistic receivables situations. Bad Debt Provision Exercises may provide students with opportunities to analyse customer balances, estimate potential losses, prepare adjustments, and determine appropriate receivables values using simulated accounting scenarios. Such practical activities may strengthen students’ ability to apply receivables valuation procedures accurately and improve their practical accounting competence. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Bad Debt Provision Exercises on students’ receivables valuation skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical accounting competencies through concrete experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant accounting knowledge and practical skills enhances students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional accounting responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Bad Debt Provision Exercises may influence students’ receivables valuation skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, receivables valuation skills assessment scales, practical bad debt provision exercises, customer-account schedules, aged receivables schedules, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, financial statement preparation tasks, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Bad Debt Provision Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as identification of trade receivables, identification of doubtful debts, identification of irrecoverable debts, recognition of bad debts, recognition of doubtful debts, customer-account analysis, receivables ageing, preparation of aged receivables schedules, estimation of bad debt percentages, application of percentage-of-receivables methods, application of percentage-of-credit-sales methods, determination of estimated uncollectible amounts, calculation of provision for doubtful debts, calculation of allowance for doubtful accounts, adjustment of existing provisions, comparison of existing and required provisions, treatment of increases in provisions, treatment of decreases in provisions, treatment of additional bad debts, treatment of recovered debts, write-off procedures, provision-account preparation, bad-debt-expense calculation, journal-entry preparation, ledger posting, receivables-account adjustment, allowance-account adjustment, income-statement treatment, statement-of-financial-position treatment, net receivables calculation, net realizable value determination, disclosure procedures, accounting-policy interpretation, supporting-document analysis, customer-credit assessment, credit-risk identification, collection-history analysis, payment-pattern analysis, overdue-account identification, customer-balance verification, reconciliation of receivables records, error identification, error correction, documentation of valuation adjustments, internal-control procedures, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group exercises, case studies, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging receivables valuation scenarios. Students’ receivables valuation skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to identify trade receivables, distinguish doubtful debts from irrecoverable debts, recognize bad debts, identify doubtful accounts, analyse customer balances, prepare aged receivables schedules, classify receivables according to age, apply appropriate bad debt percentages, estimate uncollectible amounts, calculate provisions for doubtful debts, calculate allowances for doubtful accounts, determine required provisions, compare existing and required provisions, adjust provisions upward or downward, account for additional bad debts, account for recovered debts, process write-offs, prepare provision accounts, calculate bad debt expenses, prepare journal entries, post ledger entries, adjust receivables accounts, adjust allowance accounts, reflect bad debt expenses in income statements, present receivables appropriately in statements of financial position, calculate net receivables, determine net realizable value, apply appropriate disclosure procedures, interpret accounting policies, analyse supporting documents, assess customer-credit information, identify credit risks, analyse collection histories, assess payment patterns, identify overdue accounts, verify customer balances, reconcile receivables records, identify valuation errors, correct valuation errors, document adjustments, apply internal controls, demonstrate accuracy, demonstrate attention to detail, demonstrate numerical competence, demonstrate analytical ability, demonstrate accounting competence, demonstrate problem-solving ability, demonstrate decision-making ability, demonstrate confidence, demonstrate efficiency, demonstrate accountability, demonstrate responsibility, demonstrate professionalism, demonstrate adaptability, and overall receivables valuation competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Bad Debt Provision Exercises, practical experiences, and receivables valuation skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Bad Debt Provision Exercises on students’ receivables valuation skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, receivables valuation skill scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Bad Debt Provision Exercises have a significant positive impact on students’ receivables valuation skills in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to structured practical exercises are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify doubtful debts, estimate potential credit losses, adjust receivables balances, and determine the appropriate value of net receivables. Trade-receivables identification activities may strengthen students’ understanding of customer balances. Doubtful-debt identification exercises may improve students’ ability to recognize accounts with potential collection difficulties. Irrecoverable-debt activities may strengthen students’ ability to distinguish debts that should be written off from those requiring provision. Customer-account analysis may improve students’ ability to evaluate individual receivables balances. Receivables-ageing activities may strengthen students’ ability to classify outstanding balances according to their age. Aged-receivables schedules may improve students’ understanding of how overdue balances influence expected credit losses. Percentage-estimation exercises may strengthen students’ ability to apply appropriate bad debt rates. Percentage-of-receivables activities may improve students’ ability to estimate provisions based on outstanding customer balances. Percentage-of-credit-sales activities may strengthen students’ understanding of estimating bad debt expense from credit sales. Provision-calculation exercises may improve students’ ability to determine required allowances. Existing-versus-required provision comparisons may strengthen students’ ability to identify appropriate adjustments. Provision-increase activities may improve students’ ability to recognize additional bad debt expenses. Provision-decrease activities may strengthen students’ ability to account for reductions in estimated losses. Additional bad debt exercises may improve students’ ability to account for newly identified irrecoverable amounts. Debt-recovery exercises may strengthen students’ ability to recognize the accounting implications of recovered debts. Write-off exercises may improve students’ ability to remove irrecoverable balances from receivables records. Provision-account preparation may strengthen students’ understanding of allowance-account movements. Bad-debt-expense calculations may improve students’ ability to determine the appropriate expense recognized for the period. Journal-entry activities may strengthen students’ ability to translate valuation adjustments into accounting entries. Ledger-posting exercises may improve students’ ability to maintain accurate receivables and allowance records. Receivables-account adjustments may strengthen students’ ability to reflect expected losses appropriately. Allowance-account adjustments may improve students’ ability to maintain appropriate provision balances. Income-statement activities may strengthen students’ understanding of the effect of bad debt expenses on reported profit. Statement-of-financial-position activities may improve students’ ability to present receivables at appropriate amounts. Net-receivables calculations may strengthen students’ ability to determine the amount expected to be recovered. Net-realizable-value activities may improve students’ understanding of the relationship between gross receivables and estimated losses. Disclosure exercises may strengthen students’ ability to communicate relevant receivables information in financial statements. Accounting-policy interpretation may improve students’ ability to apply appropriate valuation principles. Supporting-document analysis may strengthen students’ ability to evaluate evidence relating to customer balances. Customer-credit assessment may improve students’ understanding of factors affecting collectability. Credit-risk identification may strengthen students’ ability to recognize customers with increased repayment risk. Collection-history analysis may improve students’ ability to use previous payment behaviour in evaluating receivables. Payment-pattern analysis may strengthen students’ ability to assess customer settlement behaviour. Overdue-account identification may improve students’ ability to recognize balances requiring closer monitoring. Customer-balance verification may strengthen students’ ability to confirm the accuracy of receivables records. Reconciliation activities may improve students’ ability to compare subsidiary receivables records with control-account balances. Error-identification exercises may strengthen students’ ability to detect incorrect provisions, omissions, classification errors, and calculation mistakes. Error-correction activities may improve students’ ability to rectify valuation errors. Documentation exercises may strengthen students’ ability to maintain adequate evidence for receivables adjustments. Internal-control activities may improve students’ understanding of procedures for safeguarding receivables information and ensuring reliable valuation. Practical demonstrations may provide clear models of bad debt provision procedures. Guided exercises may provide structured support during skill development. Individual assignments may strengthen independent receivables valuation ability. Group exercises may improve collaborative problem-solving. Case studies may expose students to realistic credit and collection situations. Repeated practice may improve accuracy, speed, confidence, and independence. Peer assessment may expose students to alternative approaches to receivables valuation. Lecturer assessment and feedback may help students identify and correct calculation and recording errors. Self-assessment may encourage students to evaluate their practical performance. Reflective practice may help students learn from valuation mistakes. Progressively challenging scenarios may prepare students for increasingly complex receivables valuation responsibilities. However, the effectiveness of Bad Debt Provision Exercises may be constrained by inadequate accounting laboratories, limited access to realistic customer-account records, insufficient practical materials, large class sizes, limited practical training periods, inadequate lecturer supervision, outdated instructional materials, limited access to accounting software, insufficient authentic business records, inadequate feedback, low student participation, weak industry collaboration, and inadequate integration of practical receivables valuation activities into Accounting Education curricula. The study therefore expects realistic, structured, hands-on, workplace-oriented, and adequately supervised Bad Debt Provision Exercises to contribute significantly to improved receivables valuation skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Bad Debt Provision Exercises, receivables valuation skills, Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, Human Capital Theory, accounting education, practical accounting education, trade receivables, doubtful debts, bad debts, allowance for doubtful accounts, provision for doubtful debts, receivables ageing, credit-risk assessment, debt recovery, debt write-offs, bad debt expense, net receivables, net realizable value, financial statement presentation, financial reporting, accounting adjustments, transaction recording, ledger posting, internal controls, reconciliation, error detection, error correction, accounting software, practical accounting competence, workplace readiness, employability skills, professional competence, Accounting Education students, Nigerian polytechnics, and Accounting Education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Board for Technical Education, polytechnic administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, employers, industry partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students’ practical receivables valuation competencies. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Bad Debt Provision Exercises into Accounting Education programmes, establishing realistic receivables valuation simulation environments, providing authentic customer-account and aged-receivables records, strengthening students’ bad debt estimation and adjustment skills, incorporating reconciliation and error-detection activities, improving access to accounting software and practical resources, providing repeated practical exercises and structured feedback, expanding collaboration between polytechnics and accounting workplaces, and aligning Accounting Education programmes with contemporary receivables valuation and financial reporting requirements in Nigeria.
