Impact of Cash Book Exercises on Cash Management Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Effective cash management is essential for maintaining liquidity, controlling cash flows, preventing errors, and supporting sound financial management in organizations. Accounting education students require practical competence in recording cash and bank transactions, maintaining accurate cash books, reconciling balances, identifying discrepancies, and applying appropriate cash-management procedures. However, conventional approaches to teaching cash book preparation may emphasize theoretical explanations and routine calculations without providing sufficient opportunities for students to practise cash-management procedures in realistic accounting situations. Cash Book Exercises provide students with structured opportunities to record cash and bank transactions, prepare different types of cash books, analyse receipts and payments, identify errors, reconcile balances, and apply cash-control procedures. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of cash book exercises on cash management skills among accounting education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Mastery Learning Theory. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation, providing a suitable framework for students' engagement with practical cash book activities. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, problem-solving, prior knowledge, and the construction of knowledge through meaningful learning experiences. Mastery Learning Theory emphasizes repeated practice, corrective feedback, formative assessment, and opportunities for learners to achieve clearly defined competencies. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how cash book exercises may influence students' cash management skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private polytechnics across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, polytechnics, schools or departments, levels of study, and eligible accounting education students. Cash book exercises will be assessed using indicators such as frequency of practical exercises, preparation of single-column cash books, double-column cash books, three-column cash books, cash and bank transactions, receipts and payments, contra entries, discounts, bank transactions, petty cash transactions, imprest procedures, cash book balancing, bank reconciliation, error identification, cash-control procedures, cash-flow recording, spreadsheet-based cash book exercises, accounting software, case studies, individual and group activities, lecturer guidance, feedback, and opportunities for repeated practice. Students' cash management skills will be assessed using indicators such as accurate recording of cash transactions, classification of receipts and payments, preparation and balancing of cash books, management of cash and bank balances, identification of cash discrepancies, reconciliation of cash records, treatment of contra entries, management of discounts, petty cash management, application of imprest procedures, cash-flow monitoring, identification of unusual cash transactions, application of cash-control procedures, prevention and detection of cash errors, interpretation of cash information, and ability to apply accounting knowledge to realistic cash-management situations. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized cash management skills tests, practical cash book preparation tasks, cash transaction scenarios, bank reconciliation exercises, spreadsheet activities, competency-based assessment rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, cash book learning experiences, practical exercise exposure, and levels of cash management skills. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of cash book exercises on students' cash management skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, cash management skill scores before and after exposure to cash book exercises may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving conventional bookkeeping instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that cash book exercises have a significant positive impact on cash management skills among accounting education students in Nigerian polytechnics. Students who regularly engage in structured cash book exercises are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to record and classify cash transactions, balance cash books, reconcile cash and bank balances, identify discrepancies, manage petty cash, apply cash-control procedures, and interpret cash information than students exposed primarily to conventional lecture-based instruction. Repeated practical exercises may improve students' numerical accuracy, attention to detail, analytical reasoning, and understanding of how cash transactions affect organizational records and liquidity. Exercises involving bank transactions, contra entries, discounts, petty cash, and reconciliation may help students develop a more comprehensive understanding of cash management and internal control. Spreadsheet-based and computerized cash book exercises may further strengthen students' digital accounting competence and ability to process cash information efficiently. However, inadequate access to accounting laboratories, limited availability of accounting software, large class sizes, insufficient instructional time, limited lecturer training, and inadequate opportunities for repeated practice may reduce the effectiveness of cash book exercises. The study therefore expects structured, practical, progressively challenging, and technology-supported cash book exercises to contribute significantly to improved cash management skills among accounting education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on cash book exercises, cash management skills, accounting education, bookkeeping education, practical accounting competence, experiential learning, constructivist learning, mastery learning, accounting pedagogy, internal control education, and polytechnic education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Board for Technical Education, polytechnics, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, accounting firms, employers, curriculum developers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening practical bookkeeping and cash-management education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for increasing practical cash book activities in accounting education programmes, developing realistic Nigerian cash transaction cases, integrating spreadsheet and accounting software into cash-management exercises, strengthening students' training in cash control and bank reconciliation, training accounting educators in practical cash management instruction, using competency-based assessment rubrics, providing continuous corrective feedback, and creating opportunities for accounting education students to develop the practical cash-management skills required for effective accounting practice in Nigeria.
