Impact of Entrepreneurial Accounting Training on Students’ Ability to Support Small Business Decision-Making in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Entrepreneurial accounting training is an important component of accounting education that equips students with practical knowledge and skills for managing accounting information in entrepreneurial and small business environments. Small business decision-making requires reliable financial information to support decisions concerning pricing, costs, cash management, resource allocation, profitability, and business growth. However, accounting students may have limited ability to apply accounting knowledge to the practical decision-making needs of small businesses when their training is largely theoretical. This study therefore examines the impact of entrepreneurial accounting training on students’ ability to support small business decision-making in Nigerian universities. Entrepreneurial accounting training exposes students to accounting practices and financial management activities relevant to entrepreneurial ventures and small businesses. It may include training in bookkeeping, cash-flow management, budgeting, cost analysis, pricing, financial forecasting, record keeping, and interpretation of financial information. Through practical exercises, business cases, simulations, and other application-oriented activities, students can learn how accounting information is generated and used to address common business challenges. Such training can provide students with practical knowledge that enables them to connect accounting concepts with the financial requirements of entrepreneurial activities. Students’ ability to support small business decision-making refers to their capacity to use accounting information to assist business owners in evaluating alternatives and making appropriate operational and financial decisions. This ability includes interpreting financial information, assessing costs and revenues, evaluating profitability, supporting cash-management decisions, preparing budgets, and providing relevant financial information for business planning. Effective support for small business decision-making requires students to combine accounting knowledge with analytical and problem-solving skills. Entrepreneurial accounting training may therefore strengthen students’ capacity to apply accounting information in practical business decision-making situations. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise accounting education students in selected Nigerian universities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ exposure to entrepreneurial accounting training and their ability to support small business decision-making. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistical techniques appropriate for determining the impact of entrepreneurial accounting training on students’ decision-support abilities. The study is expected to establish that entrepreneurial accounting training has a positive impact on students’ ability to support small business decision-making. Students who receive practical entrepreneurial accounting training are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to interpret financial information, evaluate business alternatives, analyze costs and revenues, and provide relevant financial information for decision-making. The study may also establish that practical training activities involving realistic small business situations help students develop greater competence in applying accounting knowledge to business decisions. The findings are expected to have important implications for teaching and learning in accounting education. Accounting educators may need to integrate entrepreneurial accounting activities more extensively into university accounting programmes. Practical exercises involving small business financial records, budgeting, pricing decisions, cash-flow analysis, cost evaluation, and business performance assessment can help students understand how accounting information supports entrepreneurial decision-making. This approach may also encourage students to develop practical and analytical skills that are relevant to both employment and self-employment. The study will be significant to accounting education students, accounting educators, university administrators, curriculum planners, small business owners, professional accounting bodies, and employers of accounting graduates. Students may benefit from improved practical competence and greater preparedness to provide accounting-related support to small businesses. Educators and curriculum planners may use the findings to strengthen entrepreneurial and practical components of accounting education, while small business owners and employers may benefit from graduates who can apply accounting knowledge to practical business decision-making needs. The study recommends that Nigerian universities strengthen entrepreneurial accounting training by incorporating practical small business cases, financial decision-making exercises, budgeting activities, cash-flow analysis, cost evaluation, and business simulations into accounting education. Students should be given regular opportunities to analyze realistic business situations and develop accounting-based recommendations. Collaboration with small business practitioners may also provide students with valuable exposure to actual business accounting challenges. The study concludes that effective entrepreneurial accounting training can enhance students’ ability to use accounting knowledge and information to support sound decision-making in small businesses.
