Impact of Financial Analysis Education on Students’ Business Performance Evaluation Skills in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Business performance evaluation is an important accounting competency that enables individuals to assess the financial condition, operational efficiency, profitability, liquidity, solvency, and overall performance of business organizations. Accounting Education students require adequate financial analysis knowledge and practical skills to interpret financial statements, evaluate business performance, identify financial strengths and weaknesses, and make informed business decisions. However, students in Nigerian universities may experience difficulties in applying financial analysis techniques to real-world business situations because of limited practical exposure and overreliance on theoretical classroom instruction. Financial Analysis Education provides students with structured knowledge and practical opportunities to analyse financial information and apply accounting concepts to the evaluation of business performance. Such education may improve students’ ability to interpret financial data, calculate and analyse financial ratios, compare business performance across periods, identify financial trends, and evaluate organizational performance. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Financial Analysis Education on students’ business performance evaluation skills in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Cognitive Learning Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical financial analysis competencies through experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active application of knowledge. Cognitive Learning Theory emphasizes how students acquire, organize, interpret, and apply financial information in solving business-related problems. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant accounting education and analytical skills enhances students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Financial Analysis Education may influence students’ business performance evaluation skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, financial analysis knowledge assessments, business performance evaluation tests, financial statement analysis exercises, practical case studies, performance rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Financial Analysis Education will be assessed using indicators such as financial statement analysis, statement of financial position analysis, income statement analysis, cash-flow statement analysis, changes in equity analysis, comparative financial statement analysis, common-size analysis, trend analysis, horizontal analysis, vertical analysis, ratio analysis, liquidity analysis, profitability analysis, solvency analysis, efficiency analysis, activity analysis, investment analysis, financial leverage analysis, working-capital analysis, cash-flow analysis, return analysis, risk analysis, cost analysis, revenue analysis, profit analysis, margin analysis, break-even analysis, budget analysis, variance analysis, financial forecasting, financial planning, financial benchmarking, industry comparison, competitor comparison, historical comparison, financial-data interpretation, financial-data presentation, financial statement interpretation, accounting-information analysis, financial-report interpretation, numerical analysis, percentage analysis, financial calculation, financial decision-making, business-performance indicators, key performance indicators, financial performance measurement, operational performance evaluation, business growth analysis, business sustainability analysis, financial health assessment, financial-strength assessment, financial-weakness identification, financial trend identification, financial risk identification, financial opportunity identification, investment appraisal, capital budgeting, business valuation, cost-volume-profit analysis, contribution analysis, margin analysis, operating-cost analysis, revenue-growth analysis, profit-growth analysis, asset-utilization analysis, debt analysis, equity analysis, working-capital management analysis, inventory analysis, receivables analysis, payables analysis, cash management analysis, financial-control analysis, accounting software, spreadsheet analysis, financial-data visualization, practical demonstrations, guided analysis, individual assignments, group exercises, case studies, simulated business analysis, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging financial-analysis scenarios. Students’ business performance evaluation skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to interpret financial statements, analyse statements of financial position, analyse income statements, analyse cash-flow statements, evaluate changes in equity, conduct comparative financial statement analysis, prepare common-size statements, conduct trend analysis, perform horizontal analysis, perform vertical analysis, calculate and interpret liquidity ratios, profitability ratios, solvency ratios, efficiency ratios, activity ratios, investment ratios, leverage ratios, and working-capital measures, evaluate cash flows, assess returns, identify financial risks, analyse costs and revenues, evaluate profits and margins, conduct break-even analysis, analyse budgets, interpret variances, prepare financial forecasts, evaluate financial plans, conduct financial benchmarking, compare business performance across periods, compare businesses within an industry, compare competitors, interpret financial data, present financial findings, interpret financial reports, perform numerical analysis, calculate financial percentages, apply financial calculations, make evidence-based business decisions, evaluate key performance indicators, measure financial performance, assess operational performance, evaluate business growth, assess business sustainability, determine financial health, identify financial strengths and weaknesses, identify financial trends, recognize financial risks and opportunities, evaluate investments, assess capital-budgeting alternatives, conduct business valuation, perform cost-volume-profit analysis, analyse contribution margins, evaluate operating costs, analyse revenue growth, evaluate profit growth, assess asset utilization, analyse debt and equity structures, evaluate working capital, analyse inventory management, assess receivables, evaluate payables, analyse cash management, assess financial controls, use accounting software, use spreadsheets, interpret financial charts, organize financial information, communicate financial findings, demonstrate analytical ability, demonstrate numerical competence, demonstrate accounting competence, demonstrate critical thinking, demonstrate problem-solving ability, demonstrate decision-making ability, demonstrate attention to detail, demonstrate confidence, demonstrate efficiency, demonstrate professional judgment, demonstrate digital competence, demonstrate adaptability, and overall business performance evaluation competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Financial Analysis Education, practical experiences, and business performance evaluation skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Financial Analysis Education on students’ business performance evaluation skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, business performance evaluation skill scores before and after exposure to Financial Analysis Education may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Financial Analysis Education has a significant positive impact on students’ business performance evaluation skills in Nigerian universities. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, university administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, employers, financial institutions, business organizations, industry partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students’ financial analysis and business performance evaluation competencies. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating practical Financial Analysis Education into Accounting Education programmes, providing access to current financial statements and realistic business cases, strengthening students’ financial statement and ratio-analysis skills, incorporating spreadsheet and accounting-software applications into financial analysis instruction, providing repeated practical analysis exercises and structured feedback, strengthening university-industry collaboration, and aligning Accounting Education programmes with contemporary financial analysis and business performance evaluation requirements in Nigeria.
