Impact of Financial Modelling Exercises on Students’ Financial Forecasting Skills in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
Financial modelling is an important component of contemporary accounting education because it enables students to use financial data, assumptions, accounting principles, and quantitative techniques to construct models that support financial analysis and forecasting. Accounting education students require practical competence in developing financial models, organizing historical financial information, identifying relevant assumptions, projecting revenues and expenses, preparing cash-flow forecasts, analysing financial statements, and evaluating alternative financial scenarios. However, students may possess theoretical knowledge of accounting and finance without sufficient practical experience in building and interpreting financial models. Financial Modelling Exercises provide students with opportunities to construct spreadsheet-based financial models, analyse historical financial information, develop financial projections, test assumptions, perform scenario analysis, and interpret forecast results. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of financial modelling exercises on students' financial forecasting skills in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Cognitive Learning Theory. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, reflective observation, conceptualization, and active experimentation, providing a suitable framework for students' participation in practical financial modelling exercises. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, problem-solving, prior knowledge, and the construction of knowledge through meaningful learning experiences. Cognitive Learning Theory emphasizes how learners acquire, organize, process, retain, and apply information, providing a suitable framework for understanding how students process financial information, assumptions, and forecasting techniques. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how financial modelling exercises may influence students' financial forecasting skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible accounting education students. Financial modelling exercises will be assessed using indicators such as historical financial data analysis, model structure and design, spreadsheet model development, revenue forecasting, sales forecasting, expense forecasting, cost projections, cash-flow forecasting, working-capital projections, income statement projections, statement of financial position projections, financial ratio projections, assumptions development, identification of key financial drivers, sensitivity analysis, scenario analysis, what-if analysis, budgeting models, break-even models, investment models, loan and financing models, profitability models, cash-flow models, integrated financial statements, data validation, formula accuracy, model documentation, spreadsheet organization, model testing, error checking, realistic financial cases, practical modelling assignments, individual exercises, group projects, lecturer demonstrations, guided practice, feedback, and repeated opportunities for financial model development. Students' financial forecasting skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to collect and organize historical financial information, identify relevant forecasting assumptions, select appropriate forecasting methods, project revenue and sales, estimate future expenses and costs, prepare cash-flow forecasts, project working-capital requirements, prepare projected financial statements, calculate and interpret forecast financial ratios, identify key financial drivers, analyse financial trends, evaluate alternative scenarios, conduct sensitivity analysis, assess the effect of changes in assumptions, identify forecasting errors, interpret forecast results, evaluate forecast reliability, communicate financial projections, justify forecasting assumptions, and apply forecasting techniques to unfamiliar financial situations. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized financial forecasting skills tests, practical financial modelling tasks, spreadsheet-based modelling exercises, financial forecasting case studies, scenario-analysis activities, competency-based assessment rubrics, observation checklists, students' financial models, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to financial modelling exercises, practical spreadsheet experiences, and levels of financial forecasting skills. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of financial modelling exercises on students' financial forecasting skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, financial forecasting skill scores before and after exposure to financial modelling exercises may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving conventional accounting and financial management instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that financial modelling exercises have a significant positive impact on students' financial forecasting skills in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to structured and practical financial modelling exercises are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to organize historical financial data, develop forecasting assumptions, project revenues and expenses, prepare cash-flow forecasts, construct projected financial statements, analyse financial scenarios, and interpret forecast results than students with limited exposure to practical financial modelling. Practical modelling activities may help students understand how historical financial performance, business assumptions, and financial drivers interact to influence future financial outcomes. Revenue and expense forecasting exercises may strengthen students' ability to identify trends and develop reasonable financial projections. Cash-flow modelling may improve students' ability to anticipate future cash requirements, while integrated financial statement models may help students understand the relationships among the income statement, statement of financial position, and cash-flow statement. Sensitivity and scenario analysis may further strengthen students' ability to evaluate the effect of changing assumptions and uncertainty on financial forecasts. Spreadsheet-based modelling may improve students' ability to organize financial data, automate calculations, identify errors, and present financial projections systematically. However, inadequate access to computers and spreadsheet applications, unreliable electricity supply, limited access to realistic financial datasets, large class sizes, insufficient instructional time, inadequate lecturer training, and students' varying levels of prior spreadsheet knowledge may reduce the effectiveness of financial modelling exercises. The study therefore expects practical, realistic, technology-supported, and well-supervised financial modelling exercises to contribute significantly to improved financial forecasting skills among accounting education students in Nigerian universities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on financial modelling exercises, financial forecasting skills, accounting education, financial analysis, spreadsheet-based learning, accounting technology, experiential learning, constructivist learning, cognitive learning, practical financial skills, management accounting education, financial decision-making, accounting pedagogy, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, curriculum developers, financial institutions, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening practical financial education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating financial modelling exercises into accounting education programmes, developing realistic financial forecasting cases and datasets, strengthening students' spreadsheet and financial modelling skills, incorporating scenario and sensitivity analysis into instruction, improving access to computers and financial modelling software, training accounting educators in contemporary financial modelling techniques, providing continuous guided practice and feedback, developing competency-based financial forecasting assessments, and aligning accounting education with the financial modelling and forecasting competencies required in contemporary accounting and business environments in Nigeria.
