Impact of Group Study on Students’ Understanding of Accounting Concepts among Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Understanding accounting concepts is essential for Accounting Education students because it provides the foundation for accurate transaction analysis, bookkeeping, financial reporting, problem-solving, and application of accounting principles in practical situations. However, some students may experience difficulties understanding abstract and complex accounting concepts when learning takes place mainly through conventional teacher-centred methods. Group study provides students with opportunities to learn collaboratively through discussion, peer explanation, shared problem-solving, exchange of ideas, and joint revision of accounting topics. These activities may enhance students’ understanding by allowing them to explain concepts to one another, clarify areas of difficulty, compare different approaches to accounting problems, and receive immediate feedback from peers. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of group study on students’ understanding of accounting concepts among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Social Constructivist Learning Theory, Social Learning Theory, and Experiential Learning Theory. Social Constructivist Learning Theory explains that learners develop understanding through interaction, discussion, collaboration, and construction of knowledge with others. Social Learning Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, imitation, peer interaction, and feedback. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop knowledge by engaging actively in learning experiences, reflecting on those experiences, applying concepts, and solving practical problems. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how group study may influence students’ understanding of accounting concepts. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, accounting concept understanding tests, achievement tests, group-study participation records, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Group study will be assessed using indicators such as group formation, study-group participation, frequency of group meetings, duration of study sessions, group discussion, peer explanation, peer questioning, collaborative reading, joint note-taking, shared revision, collaborative problem-solving, accounting exercise discussion, worked-example analysis, peer teaching, peer feedback, group assignments, case-study discussion, examination preparation, revision sessions, exchange of learning materials, sharing of accounting notes, clarification of difficult concepts, comparison of problem-solving approaches, collaborative use of textbooks, accounting standards discussion, practical accounting discussions, lecturer-supported group activities, student-led discussions, group presentations, peer assessment, self-assessment, group reflection, and continuous collaborative learning. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, group-study participation, learning experiences, and levels of accounting-concept understanding. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of group study on students’ understanding of accounting concepts. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students’ understanding scores before and after participation in group study may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional individual or teacher-centred learning to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that group study has a significant positive impact on students’ understanding of accounting concepts in Nigerian polytechnics. Students who participate in structured group-study activities are expected to demonstrate greater conceptual understanding than students who rely mainly on individual or conventional classroom learning. Group formation may encourage students to share knowledge and learning experiences. Frequent study meetings may provide repeated opportunities to review difficult accounting concepts. Group discussions may help students identify misunderstandings and develop clearer explanations. Peer explanation may allow students to understand accounting concepts using simpler and more familiar language. Peer questioning may encourage students to examine accounting principles more critically. Collaborative reading may expose students to different interpretations of accounting materials. Shared note-taking may help students identify and organize important accounting information. Joint revision may strengthen students’ retention of previously learned concepts. Collaborative problem-solving may expose students to different approaches to accounting questions. Peer assessment may encourage students to evaluate their own and others’ understanding. Self-assessment may help students identify areas requiring further study. Group reflection may enable students to review their learning experiences and correct persistent misconceptions. Continuous collaborative learning may promote sustained engagement with accounting concepts. The study therefore expects well-structured, adequately supervised, participatory, inclusive, and academically focused group-study activities to contribute significantly to improved understanding of accounting concepts among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on group study, collaborative learning, accounting-concept understanding, Social Constructivist Learning Theory, Social Learning Theory, Experiential Learning Theory, accounting education, accounting instruction, peer learning, cooperative learning, student engagement, accounting achievement, conceptual learning, accounting problem-solving, accounting knowledge retention, practical accounting education, and Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The findings will provide useful information to the National Board for Technical Education, polytechnic administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, students, professional accounting bodies, and education policymakers regarding strategies for improving accounting instruction and students’ conceptual understanding. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for incorporating structured group-study activities into Accounting Education programmes, encouraging peer teaching and collaborative problem-solving, developing effective student study groups, providing appropriate learning resources and study spaces, strengthening lecturer guidance during collaborative learning, promoting inclusive participation among group members, integrating group discussions into accounting courses, and improving students’ understanding and application of accounting concepts in Nigerian polytechnics.
