Impact of Industry-Based Learning Experiences on Accounting Education Students’ Professional Readiness in Nigeria

Abstract

Industry-based learning experiences refer to structured opportunities through which students gain practical knowledge and skills by interacting with real or simulated workplace environments, while professional readiness represents students’ preparedness to perform effectively and responsibly in professional accounting settings. Industry-based learning is important in accounting education because classroom instruction alone may not provide sufficient exposure to the practical tasks, technologies, professional standards, and workplace behaviours expected of accounting graduates. Limited practical exposure can create a gap between students’ academic knowledge and their ability to function effectively in professional environments. This study therefore examines the impact of industry-based learning experiences on accounting education students’ professional readiness in Nigeria. Industry-based learning experiences may include industrial training, internships, workplace visits, professional mentorship, accounting projects based on real business situations, interactions with practicing accountants, and industry-oriented workshops. These experiences expose students to practical accounting activities such as financial record keeping, preparation and interpretation of financial information, use of accounting technologies, internal control procedures, auditing activities, taxation processes, and professional communication. Through these experiences, students can connect theoretical accounting concepts with practical workplace situations and gain a clearer understanding of professional accounting responsibilities. Professional readiness involves students’ ability to demonstrate relevant technical knowledge, practical accounting skills, communication abilities, problem-solving skills, technological competence, ethical awareness, adaptability, and confidence in performing workplace responsibilities. Industry-based learning experiences can contribute to the development of these qualities by providing students with opportunities to observe professional practices, perform practical tasks, interact with experienced personnel, and respond to workplace situations. Meaningful exposure to industry may therefore improve students’ ability to transfer classroom knowledge into practical professional activities. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise accounting education students in selected Nigerian universities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ exposure to industry-based learning experiences and their level of professional readiness. The collected data will be analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at an appropriate level of significance. The study is expected to establish that industry-based learning experiences have a significant positive impact on accounting education students’ professional readiness. Students who participate meaningfully in workplace-oriented learning activities are expected to demonstrate greater preparedness to perform accounting tasks, communicate professionally, use relevant technologies, solve practical problems, and adapt to organizational environments. The findings may also indicate that practical exposure helps students develop a better understanding of workplace expectations and professional responsibilities. The findings will have important implications for the teaching and learning of accounting education. Greater integration of industry-based learning may encourage universities to move beyond predominantly theoretical instruction and provide students with more opportunities for experiential learning. Lecturers may incorporate real-world accounting cases, workplace projects, professional interactions, and practical assignments into their teaching. Such approaches can enhance students’ ability to connect academic concepts with professional accounting practice and develop competencies required for employment. The study will be beneficial to accounting education students, lecturers, university administrators, employers, accounting practitioners, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, and educational policymakers. Students may gain improved professional preparedness and greater confidence in applying accounting knowledge, while lecturers and curriculum developers may gain useful insights into the value of industry-oriented learning. Employers may also benefit from graduates who possess stronger practical skills and a clearer understanding of professional workplace expectations. The study recommends that universities should strengthen partnerships with accounting firms, businesses, government organizations, professional accounting bodies, and other relevant institutions to provide meaningful industry-based learning opportunities for students. Institutions should promote structured internships, workplace visits, professional mentorship, industry-based projects, and practical accounting workshops as components of accounting education. Regular evaluation of these experiences should also be encouraged to ensure that they contribute effectively to students’ professional development. The study concludes that well-structured industry-based learning experiences can significantly improve the professional readiness of accounting education students and better prepare them for contemporary accounting practice.
