Impact of Lecturer Approachability on Students’ Willingness to Seek Academic Assistance in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Students’ willingness to seek academic assistance is an important aspect of effective teaching and learning in Nigerian polytechnics because students may require clarification, guidance, feedback, and additional academic support when they encounter difficulties in their studies. Lecturer approachability, reflected in lecturers’ openness, accessibility, friendliness, responsiveness, respectfulness, availability, and willingness to listen to students, may influence whether students feel comfortable seeking academic assistance. When lecturers create supportive and non-threatening learning environments, students may be more willing to ask questions, request clarification, discuss academic difficulties, seek feedback, and obtain guidance on academic tasks. Conversely, lecturers who appear inaccessible, intimidating, dismissive, unresponsive, or overly formal may discourage students from seeking assistance, potentially allowing academic difficulties to persist. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of lecturer approachability on students’ willingness to seek academic assistance in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Social Support Theory, Self-Determination Theory, and Social Cognitive Theory. Social Support Theory explains how supportive relationships within educational environments may encourage students to seek guidance and assistance when facing academic difficulties. Self-Determination Theory emphasizes the importance of relatedness, autonomy, and competence in creating learning environments where students feel psychologically safe and motivated to engage with their lecturers. Social Cognitive Theory explains how students’ previous experiences, observations of lecturer behaviour, perceived self-efficacy, and expectations regarding the outcomes of seeking assistance may influence their willingness to approach lecturers for academic support. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how lecturer approachability may influence students’ willingness to seek academic assistance. The study will adopt a quantitative analytical cross-sectional research design. The population will comprise students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, schools or faculties, departments, programmes, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires and standardized scales measuring lecturer approachability and students’ willingness to seek academic assistance. Lecturer approachability will be assessed using indicators such as lecturer accessibility, physical availability, consultation availability, office accessibility, willingness to listen, friendliness, openness to questions, respectful communication, responsiveness to students, patience, empathy, understanding, encouragement, non-judgmental behaviour, approachability during lectures, approachability after lectures, approachability during practical sessions, availability through academic consultation periods, responsiveness to academic enquiries, responsiveness through institutional communication channels, willingness to explain difficult concepts, willingness to provide clarification, willingness to provide feedback, willingness to discuss academic challenges, willingness to guide students, willingness to recommend learning resources, fairness in interactions, inclusiveness, supportive classroom behaviour, psychological safety, trustworthiness, professionalism, consistency, communication quality, student-centred interaction, and availability for academic guidance. Students’ willingness to seek academic assistance will be assessed using indicators such as asking lecturers questions, requesting clarification, attending consultation sessions, visiting lecturers’ offices, seeking help with difficult topics, requesting feedback on assignments, seeking guidance on projects, discussing academic challenges, asking for additional learning resources, requesting explanations after class, seeking assistance during practical activities, asking for examination preparation guidance, discussing poor academic performance, seeking help when confused, reporting learning difficulties, requesting academic advice, participating in lecturer consultations, communicating academic concerns, asking for study guidance, seeking clarification about assessment requirements, requesting help with missed academic activities, seeking support for difficult assignments, asking for assistance with research tasks, seeking guidance on academic writing, seeking clarification about grading, requesting feedback on mistakes, seeking help before examinations, seeking help after poor test performance, consulting lecturers about course-related difficulties, expressing academic concerns, communicating uncertainty, requesting additional examples, seeking help with unfamiliar concepts, asking for recommendations on academic materials, and willingness to seek assistance when needed. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ characteristics, perceptions of lecturer approachability, patterns of academic assistance-seeking, and levels of willingness to seek help. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the impact of lecturer approachability on students’ willingness to seek academic assistance. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that lecturer approachability has a significant positive impact on students’ willingness to seek academic assistance in Nigerian polytechnics. Students who perceive their lecturers as accessible, friendly, respectful, responsive, supportive, and willing to listen are expected to demonstrate greater willingness to seek academic assistance when they encounter learning difficulties. Lecturer accessibility may encourage students to initiate academic discussions and request clarification when they do not understand course content. Physical availability and accessible consultation periods may make it easier for students to approach lecturers outside formal classroom sessions. Willingness to listen may encourage students to communicate their academic concerns without fear of being ignored. Friendly and respectful interactions may reduce students’ anxiety about asking questions. Patience and understanding may encourage students who require additional explanations to seek help repeatedly when necessary. Non-judgmental behaviour may reduce students’ fear of embarrassment or negative evaluation. Responsiveness to academic enquiries may strengthen students’ confidence that seeking assistance will result in useful support. Encouragement may motivate students to communicate difficulties rather than remain silent. Empathy may help lecturers recognize students’ academic challenges and provide appropriate guidance. Availability during practical sessions may encourage students to seek assistance with difficult practical activities. Willingness to explain complex concepts may strengthen students’ perception that approaching lecturers is worthwhile. Feedback provision may encourage students to seek clarification about errors and improve their academic performance. Guidance on projects, research tasks, assignments, and academic writing may increase students’ willingness to consult lecturers when they require specialized assistance. Fairness and inclusiveness may promote trust and reduce students’ concerns about unequal treatment. Supportive classroom behaviour may create a learning environment in which students feel comfortable asking questions publicly or privately. Psychological safety may reduce fear of criticism and encourage academic communication. Trustworthiness and professionalism may strengthen students’ confidence in lecturers as reliable sources of academic assistance. Consistent lecturer behaviour may help students develop predictable expectations about seeking assistance. High-quality communication may improve students’ understanding of how and when to seek academic support. Student-centred interactions may encourage lecturers to recognize individual learning needs and respond appropriately. Students who perceive their lecturers as approachable are therefore expected to be more likely to ask questions, request clarification, attend consultation sessions, visit lecturers’ offices, seek help with difficult topics, request assignment feedback, discuss academic challenges, seek project guidance, request additional learning materials, ask questions after class, seek practical assistance, request examination guidance, discuss poor academic performance, communicate learning difficulties, seek academic advice, participate in consultations, and request support when they encounter academic problems. However, factors such as fear of embarrassment, previous negative experiences, lecturer workload, large class sizes, limited consultation periods, communication barriers, students’ personality differences, low academic confidence, fear of criticism, perceived lecturer strictness, cultural expectations regarding lecturer-student relationships, limited office accessibility, poor institutional communication systems, and students’ preference for independent learning may reduce the likelihood of seeking academic assistance. The study therefore expects accessible, supportive, respectful, responsive, and student-centred lecturer-student interactions to contribute significantly to students’ willingness to seek academic assistance in Nigerian polytechnics. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on lecturer approachability, academic assistance-seeking, lecturer-student relationships, student support, student engagement, academic communication, teaching effectiveness, learning support, educational psychology, student-centred teaching, classroom interaction, academic guidance, student participation, higher education, polytechnic education, and educational development in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Board for Technical Education, polytechnic administrators, academic departments, lecturers, student-support units, counselling units, quality-assurance departments, education policymakers, and curriculum developers regarding strategies for improving lecturer-student interactions and academic support systems. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for improving lecturer accessibility, establishing effective consultation periods, strengthening respectful lecturer-student communication, encouraging open academic discussions, improving lecturer responsiveness to students’ enquiries, creating psychologically safe learning environments, strengthening academic advising and support services, providing lecturer training on student-centred communication, reducing barriers to academic assistance-seeking, and promoting supportive teaching practices across Nigerian polytechnics.
