Impact of Marginal Costing Exercises on Students’ Cost-Based Decision-Making Skills in Nigeria
Abstract
Marginal costing is an important management accounting technique that enables students to understand the relationship between variable costs, fixed costs, contribution, sales volume, and profit and apply cost information to short-term business decisions. Accounting education students require practical competence in distinguishing relevant and irrelevant costs, calculating contribution, analysing changes in output and sales volume, evaluating alternative courses of action, and using marginal cost information to support managerial decisions. However, students may experience difficulties applying marginal costing concepts when instruction focuses mainly on theoretical explanations and routine calculations without sufficient exposure to realistic decision-making situations. Marginal Costing Exercises provide students with opportunities to apply costing principles to practical business problems involving special orders, make-or-buy decisions, product mix, limiting factors, shutdown decisions, and other short-term choices. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of marginal costing exercises on students' cost-based decision-making skills in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Cognitive Learning Theory. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, reflective observation, conceptualization, and active experimentation, providing a suitable framework for students' participation in practical marginal costing exercises. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, problem-solving, prior knowledge, and the construction of knowledge through meaningful learning experiences. Cognitive Learning Theory emphasizes how learners acquire, organize, process, retain, and apply information, providing a suitable framework for understanding students' ability to process cost information and apply it to business decisions. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how marginal costing exercises may influence students' cost-based decision-making skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible accounting education students. Marginal costing exercises will be assessed using indicators such as frequency of practical exercises, classification of fixed and variable costs, identification of marginal costs, calculation of contribution, contribution-to-sales ratio, variable costing, break-even analysis, margin of safety, relevant costing, special-order decisions, make-or-buy decisions, product mix decisions, limiting-factor decisions, shutdown decisions, acceptance or rejection of additional orders, pricing decisions, short-term profitability analysis, opportunity cost analysis, incremental cost analysis, differential cost analysis, realistic business cases, decision scenarios, group problem-solving, individual exercises, spreadsheet-based costing activities, simulations, lecturer demonstrations, guided practice, feedback, and opportunities for repeated application. Students' cost-based decision-making skills will be assessed using indicators such as identification of relevant costs, exclusion of irrelevant costs, calculation and interpretation of contribution, evaluation of special orders, make-or-buy decisions, product mix selection, limiting-factor allocation, shutdown decisions, pricing decisions, short-term profitability evaluation, identification of opportunity costs, analysis of incremental and differential costs, comparison of alternative courses of action, interpretation of marginal cost information, evaluation of changes in output and sales volume, assessment of decision risks, justification of cost-based recommendations, and ability to apply marginal costing principles to unfamiliar business situations. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized marginal costing tests, practical cost-based decision-making tasks, management accounting case studies, business decision scenarios, spreadsheet-based exercises, costing simulations, competency-based assessment rubrics, observation checklists, students' practical work, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to marginal costing exercises, practical learning experiences, and levels of cost-based decision-making skills. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of marginal costing exercises on students' cost-based decision-making skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, cost-based decision-making skill scores before and after exposure to marginal costing exercises may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving conventional management accounting instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that marginal costing exercises have a significant positive impact on students' cost-based decision-making skills in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and practical marginal costing exercises are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to identify relevant costs, calculate contribution, evaluate alternatives, assess short-term profitability, and make appropriate cost-based decisions than students taught primarily through conventional theoretical approaches. Practical exercises involving special-order decisions may help students understand how incremental revenue and relevant costs influence short-term decisions. Make-or-buy exercises may strengthen students' ability to compare avoidable costs with external purchase costs and consider opportunity costs where applicable. Product mix and limiting-factor exercises may improve students' ability to allocate scarce resources toward alternatives that provide the most appropriate contribution. Shutdown and continuation decisions may help students distinguish avoidable fixed costs from unavoidable costs and evaluate short-term operating choices. Spreadsheet-based costing exercises and simulations may further improve students' ability to organize cost information, analyse alternative scenarios, and make evidence-based recommendations. However, complex costing situations, inadequate practical resources, limited access to spreadsheet and accounting software, large class sizes, insufficient instructional time, inadequate lecturer training, and students' difficulty distinguishing relevant from irrelevant costs may reduce the effectiveness of marginal costing exercises. The study therefore expects practical, realistic, technology-supported, and well-supervised marginal costing exercises to contribute significantly to improved cost-based decision-making skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on marginal costing exercises, cost-based decision-making skills, management accounting education, accounting education, relevant costing, contribution analysis, experiential learning, constructivist learning, cognitive learning, practical costing skills, managerial decision-making, accounting pedagogy, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, curriculum developers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening management accounting education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating practical marginal costing exercises into accounting education programmes, developing realistic cost-based decision-making cases and simulations, strengthening students' understanding of relevant and irrelevant costs, incorporating special-order, make-or-buy, product mix, limiting-factor, and shutdown decision exercises, using spreadsheet and computerized costing tools in instruction, providing continuous guided practice and feedback, developing competency-based cost-based decision-making assessments, and aligning management accounting instruction with the practical decision-making competencies required in contemporary accounting and business environments in Nigeria.
