Impact of Professional Examination Preparation on Accounting Education Students’ Readiness for Professional Accounting Examinations in Nigeria

Abstract

Professional examination preparation is an important aspect of accounting education that helps students develop the knowledge, skills, confidence, and study habits required to successfully undertake professional accounting examinations. Professional accounting examinations demand a strong understanding of accounting principles, effective time management, problem-solving ability, and the capacity to apply accounting knowledge to practical and examination-based situations. However, some accounting education students may enter professional examinations without adequate preparation or sufficient familiarity with examination requirements. This study therefore examines the impact of professional examination preparation on accounting education students’ readiness for professional accounting examinations in Nigeria. Professional examination preparation involves structured revision, practice with past examination questions, mock examinations, review of professional examination syllabi, time-management activities, and exposure to examination techniques. These activities can help students become familiar with the structure and expectations of professional accounting examinations while identifying areas of weakness that require further study. Consistent preparation may also improve students’ confidence, ability to manage examination time, and readiness to respond effectively to technical and practical accounting questions. The study will adopt a survey research design and focus on accounting education students in selected Nigerian universities and other relevant tertiary institutions. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on students’ exposure to professional examination preparation and their readiness for professional accounting examinations. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, and the hypothesis formulated for the study will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that professional examination preparation has a significant positive impact on accounting education students’ readiness for professional accounting examinations. Students who participate in structured preparation activities are expected to demonstrate greater familiarity with examination requirements, improved confidence, better time-management skills, and stronger ability to apply accounting knowledge under examination conditions. Regular practice and exposure to mock examinations may also help students identify weaknesses and develop appropriate strategies for addressing challenging examination questions. The findings are expected to have important implications for accounting education programmes and the preparation of students for professional accounting careers. Accounting lecturers and academic advisers may be encouraged to introduce professional examination-oriented activities into relevant accounting courses. Structured revision programmes, mock examinations, past-question practice, examination technique sessions, and guidance on professional examination requirements may provide students with additional support as they prepare for professional examinations. The study will be beneficial to accounting education students, lecturers, professional accounting bodies, curriculum developers, university administrators, and other stakeholders in accounting education. Students may gain greater awareness of effective examination preparation strategies and develop stronger confidence in pursuing professional accounting qualifications. Lecturers and curriculum developers may also gain insight into the importance of aligning aspects of accounting education with the competencies and preparation requirements associated with professional accounting examinations. The study recommends that Nigerian tertiary institutions should strengthen professional examination preparation by providing students with structured revision programmes, mock examinations, past-question exercises, examination technique training, and appropriate academic guidance. Students should also be encouraged to develop consistent study schedules and actively participate in preparation activities. The study concludes that effective professional examination preparation can significantly improve accounting education students’ readiness for professional accounting examinations and support their transition into professional accounting practice.
