Impact of Social Media Exposure on the Career Perception of Accounting Education Students

Abstract

Social media exposure refers to the extent to which individuals encounter information, opinions, discussions, and professional content through social networking platforms, while career perception refers to the way students understand, evaluate, and form opinions about a particular profession and its opportunities. Social media has become an important source of information about occupations, workplace experiences, professional trends, and career opportunities. For Accounting Education students, exposure to accounting-related content may influence how they perceive the accounting profession and its relevance in contemporary workplaces. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of social media exposure on the career perception of Accounting Education students. Social media platforms provide students with access to professional discussions, career information, educational materials, industry news, practitioner experiences, job opportunities, and content relating to accounting practice. Through platforms such as LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and other digital networks, students may encounter information about accounting roles, professional qualifications, workplace expectations, technological changes, and emerging career paths. The nature and extent of this exposure may influence the information students receive about the accounting profession. Career perception involves students’ views concerning the attractiveness, relevance, opportunities, challenges, status, and future prospects associated with accounting careers. Positive or negative perceptions may influence how students evaluate accounting as a profession and whether they consider pursuing accounting-related employment after graduation. Social media exposure may therefore shape career perception by providing students with additional information about real-world accounting practice and the experiences of accounting professionals. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected tertiary institutions. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ exposure to social media content related to accounting and their perception of accounting careers, including perceived career opportunities, professional relevance, workplace expectations, career attractiveness, and future prospects. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that social media exposure has a significant impact on the career perception of Accounting Education students. Students who frequently encounter relevant and informative accounting-related content are expected to demonstrate greater awareness of accounting career opportunities, contemporary professional roles, workplace developments, and the changing nature of accounting practice. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in Accounting Education. Lecturers may need to guide students in identifying reliable and professionally relevant social media content relating to accounting careers. Accounting instruction can also incorporate selected digital professional resources to help students connect classroom knowledge with current developments in the accounting profession and develop more informed career perceptions. The study will be beneficial to Accounting Education students, lecturers, tertiary institutions, curriculum developers, professional accounting organizations, and employers. Students may gain broader knowledge of accounting career opportunities and contemporary professional practices, while lecturers and institutions may gain useful information for incorporating appropriate digital resources into career-oriented accounting education. Professional bodies may also use social media more strategically to provide students with accurate information about the accounting profession. The study recommends that tertiary institutions and Accounting Education lecturers should encourage students to engage with credible professional accounting content on social media while developing the ability to evaluate the reliability of online information. Professional accounting organizations should also provide accessible and informative career-related content through appropriate digital platforms. The study concludes that meaningful exposure to relevant social media content can contribute to shaping students’ perceptions of accounting careers and improving their awareness of opportunities within the accounting profession.
