MOTIVATION AS A MEANS OF ENHANCING STAFF PERFORMANCE IN AN ORGANISATION

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1         Background of the Study

In the dynamic landscape of contemporary organizations, the pivotal role of human resources in determining success cannot be overstated. Regardless of an organization's size, nature (private or public enterprise), or industry, the individuals constituting its workforce form the bedrock upon which achievements are built. Each employee brings unique drives, desires, needs, and aspirations into the organizational framework, all of which significantly influence their behavior and, consequently, the overall performance of the organization.

The interplay between the satisfaction or non-satisfaction of individual needs and organizational outcomes becomes the focal point for understanding employee behavior and productivity. Organizations that effectively address the multifaceted elements of employee motivation often find themselves better positioned for success. Motivation, in this context, refers to the intricate set of forces that induce individuals to act in desired ways within the organizational setting.

Motivation is a linchpin for achieving organizational objectives. The realization of these objectives is intricately tied to the training and motivation of employees, enabling them to acquire the requisite skills, knowledge, and abilities to perform their roles effectively and efficiently. In the context of Nigeria's technological advancement, the nexus between motivating and training employees becomes increasingly evident. Monetary incentives, including bonuses, wages, and salary increments, emerge as essential tools to foster employee motivation, thereby catalyzing heightened productivity across both private and public sectors.

Different authors offer diverse definitions of motivation. For instance, Koontz and O'Donnell (1980) characterize motivation as a means of inducing people to act in desired ways, while Pinder (1984) defines it as the force within a person influencing the direction, intensity, and persistence of voluntary behavior. Luthans (1998) posits that motivation is a process that arouses, energizes, directs, and sustains behaviors and performances, emphasizing its role in stimulating action and commitment towards desired objectives.

The intricate challenge of motivation lies in understanding and influencing the behavior of a diverse group of individuals, each possessing a distinctive set of needs and a unique personality. Effectively motivating employees becomes an essential managerial skill, intertwined with the broader goal of achieving organizational objectives. As Hekina and Jones (1967) envision, recognizing employees as valuable assets is paramount, necessitating the allocation of organizational resources to their development and motivation.

This research project delves into the review of motivation as a management tool for augmenting employee productivity, using Emenite Nigeria Plc., located in Emene, Enugu, as a case study. By exploring the various facets of motivation within this organizational context, the study aims to contribute valuable insights into the relationship between motivation and enhanced staff performance.

1.2         Statement of the Problem

The statement of the problem reveals a critical gap in organizational practices, where the importance of motivational strategies for improving employee performance is often overlooked. One primary issue lies in the lack of emphasis placed on these techniques, as organizations may perceive them as non-essential or undervalue their impact. This results in a tangible consequence - poor staff performance and diminished overall productivity. Moreover, organizational challenges, ranging from poor incentives to bureaucratic hurdles, contribute to an environment that is not conducive to optimal work performance. This study aims to delve into these intricacies, particularly within the context of Emenite Limited, to understand why effective motivational strategies are not given the attention they deserve.

Another noteworthy problem is the inadequate understanding within organizations regarding the tangible benefits derived from investing in employee motivation. The perception of motivational efforts as a drain on time and resources further exacerbates the issue. This misperception can lead to missed opportunities for fostering a positive work culture, hindering the realization of the potential gains associated with motivated and engaged employees. Additionally, resistance to change among employees poses a significant hurdle even when organizations invest in training and motivation programs. Addressing these problems is crucial for organizations seeking to optimize their workforce’s potential and achieve sustainable success.

1.3         Objectives of the Study

1.8         Limitations of the Study

1. Financial Constraints:

   - The study faced challenges due to financial constraints, affecting the ability to gather extensive materials and conduct in-depth fieldwork. Limited resources constrained the scope of data collection and analysis.

2. Attitude of Respondents:

   - The initial stage of sourcing information from members of the staff at Emenite Nigeria Plc. proved challenging due to the attitudes of some respondents. This influenced the ease and speed of data collection, potentially introducing biases in the study.

3. Time and Effort:

   - The researcher was constrained by time limitations, affecting the depth of investigation and the thoroughness of data collection. The time constraints also impacted the overall effort invested in running the project.

4. Electricity Challenges:

   - Inconsistent power supply by the local electricity provider hindered the typing, proofreading, editing, and printing phases of the research work. This posed logistical challenges in producing a polished and timely final report.

Despite these limitations, efforts were made to mitigate their impact on the quality of the study. However, it's essential to recognize these constraints when interpreting the findings and conclusions of the research.
