THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE SOCIOECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF NIGERIA: A CASE STUDY IN ABEOKUTA SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background Introduction

The role of women in socioeconomic development is a vital component of national growth and sustainability, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria. Women's contributions span various sectors, including education, healthcare, politics, agriculture, and entrepreneurship, demonstrating their indispensable role in fostering economic stability and social progress (Aderibigbe & Olanrewaju, 2020). In Abeokuta South Local Government, Ogun State, women have historically been instrumental in agricultural production, small-scale enterprises, and community-based development initiatives, which significantly contribute to the local economy and society (Olufemi & Adeola, 2022).

Globally, women's involvement in socioeconomic activities has been linked to increased household incomes, improved health outcomes, and enhanced educational opportunities for children (UN Women, 2021). In Nigeria, the Federal Government has implemented various policies and programs, such as the National Gender Policy and Women Empowerment Fund, to bridge gender disparities and enhance women's participation in economic activities (Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, 2020). However, structural inequalities, cultural norms, and limited access to resources remain significant barriers to women's full economic participation (Adebayo et al., 2021).

The cultural context of Abeokuta South Local Government offers a unique lens for examining women's contributions to socioeconomic development. This area is known for its vibrant markets, which are predominantly operated by women traders who facilitate local and regional commerce (Ogunleye et al., 2019). Women’s involvement in cooperative societies and local development committees further underscores their pivotal role in community mobilization and capacity building (Olaleye et al., 2021). Despite these contributions, women in Abeokuta South often face challenges such as inadequate financial support, gender-based discrimination, and limited access to decision-making platforms, which hinder their potential impact (Awoniyi & Fagbemi, 2022).

Recognizing the role of women in socioeconomic development is crucial for formulating inclusive policies and fostering sustainable growth. This study investigates women's roles, challenges, and potential in socioeconomic activities in Abeokuta South Local Government, offering insights into how targeted interventions can enhance their contributions to Nigeria’s overall development.

1.2       Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized contributions of women to Nigeria’s socioeconomic development, persistent challenges such as gender inequality, poverty, and inadequate access to education and healthcare services undermine their potential (UNDP, 2020). In Abeokuta South Local Government, the situation is exacerbated by sociocultural norms that marginalize women and restrict their involvement in decision-making processes (Awoniyi & Fagbemi, 2022). Moreover, the limited access to credit facilities and entrepreneurial support has left many women unable to scale their businesses or engage in meaningful economic activities (Adebayo et al., 2021).

The gap in empirical research on women’s socioeconomic roles in specific local contexts, such as Abeokuta South, highlights the need for localized studies to inform policy and program development. Without addressing these barriers, the potential of women to contribute to Nigeria's development agenda remains significantly underutilized.
