THE EFFECT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON CROP PRODUCTION AND FOOD SECURITY IN NORTHERN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study examined the effect of climate change on crop production and food security in Northern Nigeria. The research was motivated by the increasing threats posed by changing climatic conditions such as rising temperatures, irregular rainfall patterns, drought, flooding, and desertification, which significantly affect agricultural productivity and food availability in the region. The study aimed to assess the impact of climate change on crop production, examine its implications for food security, and identify adaptation strategies adopted by farmers in Northern Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population comprised farmers, agricultural extension officers, and agricultural stakeholders within selected states in Northern Nigeria. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and interviews, while secondary data were obtained from agricultural reports, climate studies, government publications, and relevant literature. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and inferential analysis to determine the relationship between climate change, crop production, and food security. Findings revealed that climate change has significantly affected crop production in Northern Nigeria through reduced agricultural yields, soil degradation, increased incidence of pests and diseases, water scarcity, and unpredictable farming seasons. The study also found that these climate-related challenges have contributed to food shortages, rising food prices, malnutrition, and increased vulnerability among rural farming households. Furthermore, the findings showed that farmers adopt coping and adaptation measures such as crop diversification, irrigation farming, use of improved crop varieties, and changes in planting periods to reduce the adverse effects of climate change. However, inadequate access to climate information, poor agricultural infrastructure, limited financial support, and insufficient government intervention were identified as major constraints affecting adaptation efforts. The study concluded that climate change poses a serious threat to crop production and food security in Northern Nigeria. It recommended strengthening climate-smart agricultural practices, improving access to agricultural extension services, investing in irrigation and rural infrastructure, enhancing farmers’ access to climate information and financial support, and implementing sustainable environmental policies to improve agricultural resilience and food security.
