Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Develop Individual Learning Plans
Abstract
Adult Education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies that support effective participation in lifelong learning. An individual learning plan is a structured outline that identifies a learner’s learning goals, activities, resources, timelines, and methods for monitoring progress. The ability to develop individual learning plans is important because it enables adults to organize their learning according to their needs, interests, available time, and educational objectives. However, some adult learners may experience difficulties in identifying appropriate learning goals and organizing their learning activities independently. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to develop individual learning plans. Adult Education provides learning experiences that can help adults understand how to establish learning goals, identify learning needs, select appropriate learning activities, organize learning resources, and develop realistic timelines. Through discussions, practical exercises, demonstrations, guided activities, and individualized learning tasks, adults can gain experience in planning their own learning activities. These approaches can also help learners understand how to arrange learning tasks in a logical sequence and review their plans as their learning needs change. Adults’ ability to develop individual learning plans refers to their capacity to prepare a structured plan that outlines what they intend to learn, the activities they will undertake, the resources they will use, and the time required to achieve their learning goals. This ability requires adults to identify relevant learning priorities, organize learning activities, establish realistic timelines, and determine appropriate ways of monitoring progress. Adults who can develop effective individual learning plans are better positioned to organize their learning activities and take purposeful responsibility for their educational development. Adult Education can therefore provide the knowledge and practical skills required to strengthen this ability. The study will adopt a quantitative research approach using a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education and continuing learning programmes. An appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to assess adults’ exposure to Adult Education and their ability to develop individual learning plans. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures, while the data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and relevant inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to develop individual learning plans. Adults exposed to relevant educational experiences are expected to demonstrate improved abilities to identify learning goals, organize learning activities, select appropriate resources, establish timelines, and structure their learning priorities. The study may further indicate that practical learning-planning activities enable adults to develop greater confidence and competence in preparing individual plans for their educational development. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators may need to provide learners with practical opportunities to develop and review individual learning plans. Goal-setting activities, learning-plan exercises, guided self-assessment, individualized assignments, and progress-monitoring activities can help adults develop practical planning skills. These approaches can make adult learning more responsive to individual needs and encourage learners to take greater responsibility for organizing their educational activities. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, continuing education providers, distance-learning institutions, and administrators of adult education programmes. Adult learners may acquire practical skills for organizing their learning goals and activities more effectively. Adult educators may gain useful information for designing learner-centred educational activities, while educational institutions may use the findings to strengthen learner-support practices and individualized learning opportunities. The findings may also assist programme administrators in promoting structured learning planning among adult learners. The study recommends that Adult Education programmes should incorporate practical activities that enable adults to develop and apply individual learning plans. Adult educators should guide learners in identifying learning goals, selecting appropriate activities and resources, establishing realistic timelines, and monitoring progress. Opportunities for learners to review and adjust their plans should also be provided. The study concludes that Adult Education can contribute to improving adults’ ability to develop individual learning plans and support more organized, purposeful, and continuous learning.
