Effect of Adult Education on Women’s Participation in Continuing Education

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities designed to provide adults with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies for personal, social, economic, and educational development, while participation in continuing education refers to the extent to which adults engage in further learning after their initial formal education. Continuing education is important for women because it provides opportunities to acquire new knowledge, improve existing skills, develop vocational competencies, and respond to changing social and economic demands. However, factors such as limited educational opportunities, family responsibilities, and inadequate access to suitable learning programmes may affect women’s participation in continuing education. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of adult education on women’s participation in continuing education. Adult education provides women with opportunities to engage in literacy education, vocational training, skills acquisition, entrepreneurship education, continuing education, and other forms of lifelong learning. These programmes may use flexible learning arrangements, practical activities, group discussions, demonstrations, and learner-centred teaching approaches to meet the needs of adult learners. Through participation in such programmes, women can acquire knowledge and skills that may encourage them to pursue further educational opportunities. Participation in continuing education involves women’s enrolment, attendance, engagement, persistence, and completion of further learning programmes. Women may participate in continuing education to improve their employment prospects, acquire new skills, increase their knowledge, or support personal and community development. Adult education may encourage such participation by developing learners’ confidence, learning abilities, awareness of educational opportunities, and readiness to engage in further education. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise women enrolled in selected adult education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure women’s exposure to adult education and their participation in continuing education. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a significant effect on women’s participation in continuing education. Women who participate actively in adult education programmes are expected to demonstrate greater willingness to enrol in further learning opportunities, attend educational activities regularly, and continue their education. The study may also establish that adult education helps women develop the confidence, knowledge, and skills required to pursue additional educational opportunities. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may need to design programmes that encourage women to view learning as a continuous process rather than a one-time activity. Flexible schedules, practical learning activities, supportive classroom environments, and relevant programme content may encourage women to remain engaged in education while managing their family, social, and occupational responsibilities. The study will be significant to women learners, adult educators, continuing education providers, programme coordinators, educational planners, community organizations, and policymakers. Women may benefit from increased awareness of continuing education opportunities and improved readiness to pursue further learning. Adult educators and programme coordinators may gain useful information for improving programme delivery, while educational planners and policymakers may use the findings to strengthen adult education initiatives that encourage women’s continued participation in learning. The study recommends that adult education programmes should provide flexible, accessible, and relevant learning opportunities that encourage women to continue their education. Adult educators should incorporate practical activities, career-related learning, skills development, and supportive learning approaches that motivate women to pursue further educational opportunities. The study concludes that effective adult education can contribute to increased participation of women in continuing education and support their lifelong learning, personal development, and contribution to society.
