Impact of Adult Literacy on Parents’ Ability to Support Children’s Learning

Abstract

Adult literacy is an important aspect of adult education that develops individuals’ ability to read, write, understand information, and use literacy skills in everyday situations. Parents’ ability to support children’s learning is important because effective parental support can contribute to children’s educational progress and create a positive learning environment at home. However, limited literacy skills may make it difficult for some parents to understand school materials, assist with learning tasks, follow written instructions, and communicate effectively about their children’s education. This study will examine the impact of adult literacy on parents’ ability to support children’s learning. Adult literacy involves the acquisition and application of reading, writing, comprehension, numeracy, and functional literacy skills needed for everyday life. Adult literacy programmes may provide parents with opportunities to practise reading educational materials, writing simple messages, interpreting information, and applying literacy skills to practical situations. Through these learning activities, parents can develop competencies that may be useful when assisting children with school-related tasks and managing educational information received from schools. Parents’ ability to support children’s learning refers to the capacity of parents to provide academic, material, motivational, and practical assistance that contributes to their children’s learning. Such support may include helping children with homework, reading with them, monitoring schoolwork, providing learning materials, understanding school instructions, and communicating with teachers when necessary. Adult literacy can influence this ability by improving parents’ capacity to read and understand educational materials, assist with basic learning activities, and respond appropriately to information relating to their children’s education. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise parents participating in selected adult literacy programmes and parents with school-age children in selected communities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and literacy-based assessment designed to measure adult literacy and parents’ ability to support children’s learning. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult literacy has a positive impact on parents’ ability to support children’s learning. It is anticipated that parents with greater exposure to adult literacy education will demonstrate stronger abilities to assist with homework, understand school information, monitor learning activities, and provide appropriate educational support at home. The study may also establish that improved literacy skills enable parents to participate more effectively in activities that contribute to their children’s educational development. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education by emphasizing the importance of making adult literacy programmes relevant to parents’ educational responsibilities. Adult literacy educators may incorporate school-related reading materials, homework-support activities, educational vocabulary, interpretation of school notices, and practical family-learning exercises into programme delivery. Such approaches can help parents apply newly acquired literacy skills directly to their children’s learning needs. The study will be significant to adult educators, literacy facilitators, parents, teachers, school administrators, educational institutions, policymakers, and community organizations. Adult educators may use the findings to design literacy programmes that address the practical educational needs of parents. Teachers and schools may also benefit from increased parental support for children's learning, while policymakers and community organizations may use the findings to strengthen adult literacy initiatives that promote family involvement in education. The study will recommend that adult literacy programmes should incorporate practical activities that equip parents to support children’s learning at home. Literacy educators should provide parents with opportunities to practise reading school materials, assisting with basic learning tasks, interpreting educational information, and communicating with teachers. It will also recommend stronger collaboration between adult literacy centres, schools, and families in developing relevant literacy activities. The study concludes that effective adult literacy can strengthen parents’ ability to provide meaningful support for their children’s learning.
