Impact of Family Literacy Programmes on Parents’ Educational Participation

Abstract

Family literacy programmes provide learning opportunities that develop adults’ literacy skills while connecting learning with family life and educational responsibilities. Parents’ educational participation is important because active parental involvement can support children’s learning, strengthen relationships with schools, and encourage a positive educational environment within the family. However, limited literacy skills and inadequate access to family-oriented educational programmes may restrict parents’ involvement in educational activities. This study will examine the impact of family literacy programmes on parents’ educational participation. Family literacy programmes combine literacy instruction with activities that relate to parenting, family learning, and educational development. These programmes may involve reading activities, writing exercises, comprehension tasks, educational discussions, storytelling, home-learning activities, and guidance on supporting children’s education. Through such activities, parents can develop functional literacy skills and gain knowledge that can be applied to educational responsibilities within the home and interactions with schools. Parents’ educational participation refers to the involvement of parents in activities that support their own learning and their children’s educational development. It may include attending educational meetings, participating in literacy activities, assisting children with schoolwork, communicating with teachers, attending school programmes, and taking part in family learning activities. Family literacy programmes can influence parents’ educational participation by providing relevant learning opportunities and encouraging parents to become more actively involved in educational activities at home, in schools, and within their communities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise parents participating in selected family literacy programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in family literacy programmes and parents’ educational participation. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that family literacy programmes have a positive impact on parents’ educational participation. It is anticipated that parents who participate in family literacy programmes will demonstrate greater involvement in educational activities, including family learning, school-related activities, and support for children’s learning. The study may also establish that participation in family literacy programmes encourages parents to develop greater interest in education and apply acquired literacy skills to educational responsibilities. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult and family literacy education by emphasizing the importance of connecting literacy instruction with practical family and educational needs. Family literacy educators may incorporate collaborative reading, writing activities, educational discussions, parent-child learning tasks, and school-related literacy materials into programme delivery. Such approaches can make learning more meaningful while encouraging parents to participate actively in educational activities. The study will be significant to adult educators, literacy facilitators, parents, teachers, school administrators, educational institutions, policymakers, and community organizations. Adult educators may use the findings to improve family literacy programmes and make them more responsive to parents’ educational needs. Schools and teachers may also benefit from increased parental involvement, while policymakers and community organizations may use the findings to support literacy initiatives that promote stronger family participation in education. The study will recommend that family literacy programmes should incorporate practical learning activities that encourage parents to participate actively in educational matters. Literacy educators should provide opportunities for parents to engage in reading, writing, family learning, school-related activities, and educational discussions. It will also recommend stronger collaboration between family literacy providers, schools, and parents in developing programmes that support educational participation. The study concludes that effective family literacy programmes can contribute to increased parents’ educational participation and strengthen the role of families in supporting lifelong learning.
