Effect of Adult Literacy Programmes on Reading Skills among Adult Learners

Abstract

Adult literacy programmes are organized educational interventions designed to help adults develop basic reading, writing, numeracy, and functional communication skills, while reading skills refer to the ability to recognize words, understand written information, interpret texts, and derive meaning from written materials. Reading is essential for adult learners because it supports effective participation in employment, family responsibilities, community activities, and lifelong learning. However, many adult learners experience difficulties in reading and understanding written materials due to limited educational opportunities and inadequate literacy support. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of adult literacy programmes on reading skills among adult learners. Adult literacy programmes provide structured learning opportunities through activities such as word recognition, vocabulary development, sentence construction, reading practice, comprehension exercises, and the use of functional reading materials. These programmes may be delivered through community learning centres, adult education institutions, literacy classes, and other flexible learning arrangements that accommodate the needs of adult learners. The effectiveness of such programmes depends on the relevance of instructional materials, teaching methods, learning activities, and the extent to which lessons relate to learners’ everyday experiences. Reading skills involve several abilities, including recognizing words, understanding sentences, identifying main ideas, interpreting information, and drawing meaning from written texts. For adult learners, these skills are particularly important because they enable them to read notices, instructions, forms, newspapers, labels, educational materials, and other documents encountered in daily life. Participation in adult literacy programmes may provide learners with regular opportunities to practise these skills and gradually improve their confidence and competence in reading. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult literacy centres. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a reading skills assessment designed to measure learners’ exposure to adult literacy programmes and their reading abilities. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult literacy programmes has a significant effect on the reading skills of adult learners. Adult learners who receive regular and structured literacy instruction are expected to demonstrate better word recognition, reading comprehension, interpretation of written information, and general reading ability. The study may also indicate that consistent participation in literacy activities provides learners with greater opportunities to practise and strengthen their reading skills. The findings will have important implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may need to use practical and learner-centred reading activities that connect literacy instruction with learners’ everyday experiences. The use of relevant reading materials, guided reading exercises, vocabulary development activities, and comprehension tasks may help adult learners develop stronger and more functional reading abilities. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, literacy programme coordinators, community education providers, government agencies, and curriculum planners. Adult learners may benefit from improved reading competence that can support their participation in social, economic, and educational activities. Educators and programme coordinators may also gain useful information for improving literacy instruction, while policymakers may use the findings to strengthen adult literacy initiatives and promote wider participation in literacy education. The study recommends that adult literacy programmes should provide regular and practical reading activities that address the educational and everyday needs of adult learners. Adult educators should employ appropriate teaching methods, relevant instructional materials, and continuous assessment to monitor learners’ reading development. The study concludes that well-structured adult literacy programmes can play an important role in improving the reading skills of adult learners and supporting their effective participation in lifelong learning and community life.
