Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Local Tourism Attractions
Abstract
Adult Education refers to organized learning opportunities that equip adults with relevant knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies for personal, social, economic, and community development. Local tourism attractions are places, resources, events, or features within a community that can attract visitors because of their cultural, historical, natural, recreational, or social value. Adults’ ability to identify local tourism attractions is important because recognizing available tourism resources can encourage community participation, support destination promotion, and create awareness of potential tourism opportunities. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of attractions within their communities or may not recognize the tourism value of resources that are already familiar to them. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to identify local tourism attractions. Adult Education can expose adults to tourism-related knowledge through discussions, community-based learning, field activities, practical exercises, and observation of local environments. Through these learning experiences, adults can learn about different categories of tourism attractions and the characteristics that make places, cultural resources, natural features, events, and recreational facilities attractive to visitors. Adult Education can also encourage participants to investigate their local environments and develop greater awareness of tourism resources that may otherwise be overlooked. Adults’ ability to identify local tourism attractions involves their capacity to recognize, classify, describe, and distinguish tourism resources that have potential value for visitors. This ability requires awareness of local resources, observation, information gathering, and an understanding of visitor interests. Adult Education may strengthen this ability by helping adults connect existing community knowledge with tourism concepts and by providing opportunities to examine local attractions through practical and experiential learning activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and tourism-related programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate identification assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to identify local tourism attractions. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to identify local tourism attractions. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to identify local tourism attractions. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved abilities in recognizing different types of local attractions, distinguishing tourism resources from ordinary community features, and identifying places or resources that may be of interest to visitors. The study is also expected to indicate that practical and community-based learning can improve adults’ awareness of tourism resources within their immediate environments. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, tourism educators, community educators, and programme planners. Adult Education programmes may benefit from incorporating practical activities that encourage adults to explore their communities and document tourism attractions. Community walks, field observations, local tourism mapping, group discussions, and attraction-identification exercises could provide meaningful opportunities for adults to connect tourism knowledge with their local environment. The study is expected to contribute to the understanding of how Adult Education can promote awareness and recognition of local tourism resources among adults. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes provide appropriate learning opportunities on tourism attractions, destination awareness, tourism resources, and community-based tourism. Such programmes should emphasize practical observation and local exploration to help adults recognize the tourism value of resources within their communities. The study concludes that effective Adult Education can improve adults’ ability to identify local tourism attractions and strengthen their awareness of opportunities for community participation in tourism development.
