Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Interpret Nutritional Serving Information

Abstract

Nutritional serving information provides details about the quantity of food represented by a serving and the nutrients supplied by that amount. The ability to interpret this information involves understanding serving sizes, nutrient quantities, number of servings, and the relationship between the stated serving and the amount actually consumed. Limited ability to interpret serving information may lead to inaccurate understanding of food nutrient intake and poor dietary decisions. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to interpret nutritional serving information. Adult education can provide adults with practical knowledge about serving sizes and the information commonly presented on food labels. Through explanations, demonstrations, guided exercises, discussions, and real-life examples, adult learners can be taught how to identify serving sizes, determine the number of servings in a package, and understand nutrient amounts associated with each serving. Such learning activities can help adults develop practical skills for interpreting nutritional information. Adults’ ability to interpret nutritional serving information involves accurately reading serving sizes, distinguishing between a serving and the total quantity of food in a package, and understanding how nutrient values relate to the stated serving. Adult education can strengthen these abilities by giving learners opportunities to practise interpreting serving information from different food products. Improved interpretation skills may enable adults to understand nutritional information more accurately when making everyday food choices. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners in the study area, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and practical assessment items designed to measure adults’ exposure to nutrition-related education and their ability to interpret nutritional serving information. The instrument will be validated by experts, while reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to interpret nutritional serving information. Adults who receive relevant educational exposure are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of serving sizes, nutrient quantities, and the number of servings contained in food packages. The findings may also indicate that practical exercises using actual food labels can improve adults’ ability to apply serving information accurately. The study may have implications for the teaching and learning of nutrition within adult education programmes. Adult educators may need to incorporate practical demonstrations and exercises involving food labels rather than focusing exclusively on theoretical explanations. Repeated interpretation activities can help learners develop confidence in understanding serving information and applying it to everyday food decisions. The findings may benefit adult learners, adult educators, nutrition educators, households, community education providers, and organisations involved in health promotion. Adult learners may acquire useful skills for interpreting serving information, while educators may gain insight into effective approaches for teaching practical nutrition literacy. Households may also benefit when adults apply these skills when selecting and consuming packaged foods. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical nutrition-label activities that enable adults to interpret serving sizes and nutrient quantities correctly. Adult educators should use accessible examples, demonstrations, guided comparisons, and repeated practice to reinforce learning. Relevant organisations should support nutrition education initiatives that improve practical food-information skills among adults. The study concludes that adult education can contribute meaningfully to improving adults’ ability to interpret nutritional serving information when instruction is practical, clear, and relevant to everyday food choices.
