Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Basic Tiling Procedures
Abstract
Basic tiling procedures involve practical activities required for preparing surfaces, measuring spaces, positioning tiles, applying appropriate materials, and completing simple tiling work. Knowledge of these procedures enables adults to understand the correct sequence of tiling activities and make appropriate use of basic tools and materials. Inadequate knowledge may result in poor tile arrangement, uneven surfaces, material wastage, and unsatisfactory finishing. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge through structured learning, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. This study therefore examines the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of basic tiling procedures. Adult Education in this context involves learning activities designed to introduce adults to fundamental tiling principles and procedures. These activities may include demonstrations, discussions, measurement exercises, surface-preparation activities, tile-cutting demonstrations, adhesive application, tile positioning, spacing, and finishing exercises. Learners can also be introduced to basic tiling tools and materials and their appropriate uses. Practical exposure allows adults to observe the correct sequence of activities and develop familiarity with procedures that can be applied to simple tiling tasks. Knowledge of basic tiling procedures refers to adults’ understanding of the materials, tools, preparation methods, measurements, positioning techniques, spacing requirements, adhesive application, and finishing processes associated with basic tiling. Adults with adequate knowledge are better able to recognize the stages involved in tiling and understand how different procedures contribute to a satisfactory result. Adult Education can improve this knowledge by combining explanations with demonstrations and opportunities for guided practice. Such learning experiences can strengthen adults’ ability to apply tiling knowledge to household and practical maintenance situations. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, vocational, or community-based learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of basic tiling procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of basic tiling procedures. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of basic tiling procedures. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of surface preparation, measurement, material selection, tile placement, spacing, adhesive application, and finishing procedures. The study may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised activities enhance learners’ understanding because they provide opportunities to observe and practise the correct sequence of tiling activities. The findings are expected to have implications for adult educators, vocational instructors, community learning facilitators, and skills-development organisations. Adult Education programmes that include basic tiling should provide suitable instructional materials, practical demonstrations, basic tools, and opportunities for supervised practice. Such activities can help learners connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications and develop greater confidence in carrying out simple tiling tasks. Practical tiling knowledge may also support household maintenance and provide useful skills for further vocational development. The study will conclude that Adult Education can serve as an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of basic tiling procedures. It will recommend that relevant programmes incorporate demonstrations, measurement exercises, tool and material identification, guided practice, and appropriate safety instructions. Adult educators should provide learners with repeated opportunities to apply the procedures in practical situations. The study will contribute to the development of practical Adult Education programmes that equip adults with useful tiling knowledge for household maintenance, vocational activities, and everyday applications.
